  1. No matter what they do this weekend it will never make up for 1984.
  2. It would be pretty cool for Mad Dog to get the win tomorrow night for the Padres that puts the Cubs in the playoffs.
  3. How pissed must the Padres be that the Cubs are sliding in while they fight for their lives with the Rockies breathing down their necks for the wild card. Rockies have won 10 in a row and are leading again tonight. And it sucks a lot worse to be a Mets fan then a Cubs fan right now. It would be funny as hell to see them miss the playoffs and get some real belated 1969 karma payback.
  4. I did not see a potential playoff roster topic and I had to post this Sullivan article because it once again shows how big of a dope he is. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/09/playoff-roster-.html Hey Paul, you are the beat writer for the team, here's an idea, actually put some thought about your article before you post it. Seriously, Murton has started almost every game lately and he completely forgets him? The comments ripping him after the article are also pretty funny. When you are a condescending smart ass I guess you can't expect to be cut much slack when you make an obvious mistake. Anyway, my guess at this point would be: Zambrano Lilly Hill Marquis Dempster Howry Marmol Wood Wuertz Eyre Ohman (only because it seems they would want two LH relievers) Kendall Soto Theriot Lee DeRosa Fontenot Ramirez Soriano Jones Monroe Floyd Murton Ward Pie
  5. I think with Soto, Murton, etc and Lou's new lineup against lefties teams should pretty much stop expecting to shut down the Cubs with any lefty they throw out there. Lou has made the adjustments and it is no longer a weakness. Hopefully that same lineup lights up D-Train on Tuesday.
  6. Man, that will be one fun weekend. Shh! One step at a time. As much fun as all that sounds, it is just as likely the the Cubs get shut down today by Gorzelanny while the Brewers light up Reyes then win tomorrow against the Pujols-less Cardinals. Now it is 1 game up with 6 to play and not so much of a sure thing. Cubs really need to complete the sweep today to keep the pressure on.
  7. I think the Cubs will definitely be looking to use Marshall as trade bait this offseason to obtain players to upgrade the offense. Three lefties in the rotation is a bit much and he would seem to be the most likely to go. Prior, Hart, Gallagher, etc could then compete for the 5th spot.
  8. maybe I'm counting wrong, but that would leave a spot for an 11th pitcher Yep - he listed 22 (not 23) locks. If playoffs were tomorrow it would probably be Monroe and Hart. However, it might depend on who the Cubs match up with because that would leave only one LH reliever.
  9. I haven't heard about this. Are there any links? Any cities which seem the most likely? I agree they need to get the hell out of Tampa, though. They'll never even sniff .500 in that place. Or in the AL East. It's a beautiful day in Florida... Perfect for a baseball game... TOO BAD ITS INDOORS! Clearly you have never sat outside on a normal beautiful summer afternoon in Florida. Nice if you are at the beach, not so nice in a pool of sweat watching a baseball game. If the season was from October to March it would be great. April to September - not so much.
  10. In case anyone is interested, here is the new logo and uniform for Tampa Bay starting next year. For some reason the new owners were looking to get rid of the "Devil" almost immediately from when they bought the team. It has slowly been phased out, but now it will be official. http://www.620wdae.com/pages/big_dog.html
  11. Is he done for the year? I hadn't heard anything. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7248518?MSNHPHMA
  12. Why can't the Cubs also catch a break and have Griffey get hurt and miss the last series? Oh, wait a second....
  13. wow - did you think they would go 12-0 to end the season?
  14. Is it? Do you see the scrub the Astros are throwing out tomorrow. Guys we aren't really tied for first. We are as good as in second the way the Brewers are playing. With a uniform number of 71, you know he must be good.
  15. News flash! They are not going to win every game. Going 7-3 down the stretch would be a darn good run so no use getting overly dramatic every time they lose. Eventually the Brewers will need to play a team that will use actual major league quality starting pitchers.
  16. I would do Marmol for Tejada, but would try to get them to also take Jones to offset some of the salary. While Marmol has been lights out this year, it is hard to predict what relievers will do year to year. This team badly needs the offensive upgrade because the chances of them contending again next year with a similar record as they have now is pretty slim. Tejada at short would allow them to put Pie in CF and not worry so much about him producing right away.
  17. Floyd and Ward have been hot lately. True, but looking at his numbers against Mulder, there's really no excuse to not see the Big Murt today to help drive the nail in the Cardinals' coffin. I get a Monroe vibe.
  18. Me too and it also seems to effect them the next time out too. I find it hard to believe that Z and Lilly on three days rest can be any worse than what we have seen from Marshall and Trachsel recently.
  19. yea, cuz we hit soo well against JOEL FREAKIN PENEIRO for 4+ innings.... I did not see the game, but am I missing something? Kendall had an error on a strikout but that was followed by walk, double, single, sacrifice, triple. The pitching has some most of the responsibility here. Errors are going to happen.
  20. Doesn't seem screwed up to me. Seems to me we are getting our best pitchers on the mound as much as possible down the stretch.
  21. What is so confusing? Piniella has publicly stated that he wants to start his top four pitchers as much as possible down the stretch. Lilly is also starting Wednesday on 3 days rest. Then with the off days they may only need to pitch someone other than Z, Lilly, Hill or Marquis once (the last game of the Florida series) the rest of the season. By getting Lilly a start before the off day on Thursday it allows them to skip the fifth starters spot the next time around and keep everyone on 4 days between starts.
  22. I think the 27th will be either a Marshall or Trachsel start. In a perfect world, the Cubs win 12-11 tonight and Trachsel is DFAed after the game. No. In a perfect world Trachsel trips on his way to the bullpen mound for pregame warmups, hurts himself, and can't even start the game today. Then Marshall is plugged in to replace him, pitches his best game of the year, and returns to the rotation for good. And then who starts the other game of the double header on Saturday?
  23. Yes but he can hit the damn ball and get on the damn base... I'm sure Soto can do the same thing with his bat and his glove will obviously be better... But will his game-calling be better than Kendall? Would it be worth putting him in there if it isnt? Yes. Lou didn't ever really piss and moan about Barrett's defense. I think that getting in a fight with your starting pitcher then following him into the clubhouse during the game to continue the conflict is probably where Barrett lost Lou. That and running the bases like a drunk monkey (and that is probably an insult to base running drunk monkeys).
  24. I feel your frustration, but look at the Cards last year. Let's just get there and see what happens. Making the post season is great no matter what your record is. Have people not figured out yet that this is a .500 team and no matter how upset you get with them they are still going to be a .500 team? If by some stroke of luck being a .500 team is good enough to make the playoffs they will. Then they will probably lose in the first round in 4 games. No point in getting all worked up about it every night like this some awesome team that is way underachieving. The problem though isn't that people are expecting a .500 team to overachieve. It's that people expect this team to earn their $100 million+ salaries. And frankly, a .500 record ain't cutting the mustard when you have hundreds of millions committed to franchise players over the next four seasons or more. At this point it doesn't matter what the payroll is, after 140+ games you know what this team is. Maybe they will get lucky and run off a 10 game winning streak, or maybe they will get unlucky and run off a 10 game losing streak. But most likely they will be 10-8 the rest of the way and hope that Milwaukee fades.
