I think if the Padres don't pick up his option, he's a free agent after the season. And seeing as rumor has it that Towers offered up Giles to the Cubs before the deadline, and IMO had a deal in place for Giles to go to Boston--to which Giles vetoed---I get the distinct impression the Padres won't be picking up the option for next yr. So he could've gone to Boston for two months + chance to get a ring on his finger, asked them not to pick up his option, and returned to the West Coast. Epic fail.
