  1. i'm somewhat fearful of how rich's curveball will bite in the thin air
  2. where is the hill/blanco option
  3. i like how murton goes from benchwarmer to the cleanup spot... great consistency in the thought process lou
  4. I'd have to agree. However, I think Griffey would have toppled 800 if it wasn't for his injuries :\ Griffey joins Mantle as the greatest "should have been" players ever. Hmm...Jimmy Foxx has to be considered, doesn't he? Jimmie, and yes he should be considered. Problem is, he was a first baseman, and he just wasn't as good as Gehrig (.346 EqA versus .329 EqA). When I put Eddie Collins on the team as the utility IF, i was thinking more about guys who would be able to fill the utility role... but Foxx could arguably be ahead of Collins. Foxx was a better hitter, but Collins provided a lot more offense over the average 2B, and he was also good for a longer period of time than Foxx.
  5. Don't buy this one at all. If this were random, it would start to even out over the course of the season. A change of within 5% could fall within randomness, but when the change is this large there has to be something else at play, IMO. No. Above-normal warmth throughout most of the spring and summer. So unless winds just happen to be blowing in a lot more than previous years (sure doubt it), this isn't realistic. this one is certainly plausible, and if it's true, i wish they would just keep the baseballs the same from year to year
  6. Why now? The testing is still pretty lax. well home runs are down by more than 10% this year - if anyone can give me an explanation for that other than performance-enhancing drugs, i'd sure like to hear it
  7. what's happened to a lot of guys this year? unfortunately the first thing that comes to mind for me is steroids.
  8. 18??? He's only hit 12 so far. He'd have to hit 18 homers in a third of a season, which might be within reach for Prince Fielder or Ryan Howard, but Derrek Lee has never been a tremendously prolific power hitter. Even getting to the mid 20s would be a major accomplishment.
  9. Last time I checked, he's been smacking doubles all season. And his home run swing had started to come before the slump over the past week or so. and since many of the hits that used to be home runs are now doubles, we can surmise that.... yes, the wrist injury likely sapped his power.
  10. unless it's rich hill - he's either emotionally unstable or a moron when he's slumping
  11. i think we can all agree on one thing - he has the coolest name in the cubs system
  12. Wasn't Speaker a CF? He only played 18 games in the infield, all at 1B. yeah that was a brain fart... i meant eddie collins
  13. Okay so here's something that I began quite a while back but it ended up dying out. I'd like to revive it this offseason, so here's how it would work. For each position on the baseball diamond, I'd give a list of about 20 players (probably will use Bill James' rankings as an easy start, then probably add a few more names) along with a link to their Baseball Reference page (though I also like the BP pages with more nerdy stats like WARP3/EqA). Then you give your top 10 list. At the end of a week or two, I'll give each player points (10 for first, down to 1 for 10th) and then take the averages to give an overall NSBB top 10.
  14. i for one would prefer that we not refer to them as the "t.ards"
  15. i think that's always interesting... i say go for it. i think i'll go make a poll to gauge interest
  16. btw, i remember that once upon a time i started doing a historical top 10 list by position, but it kinda fell off because the season was still going on... would anyone be interested if i revived this in the offseason (since there's not much else to talk about, other than hot stove)
  17. No. I was also stunned. Put me in as stunned as well. If I had to guess, I would've said 27-29. I was stunned when I looked at his age a couple years ago. He hit well in the minors but didn't get a legit shot until he was 29. That's a waste of a player's prime. I didn't look it up until today, but yeah I was pretty shocked too. I guess I just assumed that he started his MLB career in the 23-25 range, which would've put him in his late 20s.
  18. Whites P - Walter Johnson P - Roger Clemens P - Lefty Grove Closer - Trevor Hoffman C - Johnny Bench 1B - Lou Gehrig 2B - Rogers Hornsby SS - Honus Wagner 3B - Mike Schmidt OF - Babe Ruth OF - Ty Cobb OF - Ted Williams Uti OF - Mickey Mantle Uti IF - Tris Speaker Blacks P - Satchel Paige P - Bob Gibson P - Fergie Jenkins Closer - Lee Smith C - Josh Gibson 1B - Buck Leonard 2B - Joe Morgan (sorry) SS - Ernie Banks 3B - Judy Johnson OF - Willie Mays OF - Barry Bonds OF - Oscar Charleston Uti OF - Hank Aaron Uti IF - Jackie Robinson Hispanics P - Juan Marichal P - Pedro Martinez P - Luis Tiant (eventually replaced by Johan Santana) Closer - Mariano Rivera C - Pudge Rodriguez 1B - Rafael Palmeiro, for now 2B - Roberto Alomar SS - Miguel Tejada 3B - Alex Rodriguez (eventually, might put A-Ram at third and A-rod at 2nd) OF - Sammy Sosa OF - Roberto Clemente OF - Manny Ramirez Uti OF - Vladimir Guerrero Uti IF - Rod Carew (eventually David Ortiz)
  19. What about Chad Kroeger. Put him in the OF over Ruth? OMG!!!! But you are right about Griffey > Bonds. Aaron wasnt a better fielder than either of them. Bonds has a career 241.6 WARP3 and .357 (!!) EqA Griffey has a 137.5 WARP3 and .314 EqA so unless you're penalizing Bonds for using roids, there's no way in hell he belongs below Aaron or Griffey, possibly Mays too. Oh and Derek Jeter is half white, so I don't think he should be included on any of the lists.
  20. am i the only one who had no idea that he is 33 years old?
  21. while it's good that it's nothing serious, this might really sap his much-needed power for the rest of this year.
  22. back to your regularly scheduled offense
  23. what sort of bizarro world is this denver place, where jock jones can hit?
  24. i was almost rooting for the inning to end so that the dreadful interview with matt holliday's wife would be over... yeah that's great his brother is coming to live with him, please tell me more you bore of a woman
  25. okay don't care about matt holliday's wife and kids
