How to "Fix" the MLB Postseason, If You Think It Needs Fixing

There's a ton of chatter about the MLB postseason format and while I think it's blowing current issues out of proportion - we have all of two years of data from which to draw - I believe there is some merit to the criticisms. There's a relatively easy fix, though, and it can actually reduce the length of the postseason by a day should MLB wish to take that route. First, there are complaints about the number of teams in the postseason. I rather strongly disagree with this take; as a fan of m

Trade Rumor Season 2023: Where Do We Go From Here?

If there's one milestone marker that Cubs fans have become increasingly aware of in each of the last three years, it is the MLB Trade Deadline. Since Jed Hoyer has taken over the reigns as the President of Baseball Operations from Theo Epstein in 2021, it has become the doomsday clock for the roster. In the previous two seasons, the writing had been on the wall. Jed's first two seasons led to selling off once none of the core of the 2016 World Series championship roster was able to reach extensi

Three(ish) Months of the New North Side Baseball

A few people have asked about traffic and I wanted to give a quick update on site activity. The site re-launched on March 26th of this year and all data goes through yesterday, June 21st. Some of these numbers might not look that impressive but keep in mind that for 11 days in early May, we lost the NSBB domain. Two of those days had zero traffic and nine more had roughly 50% normal traffic while we fought to regain control of the primary domain from an unresponsive domain registrar. Overal

Chicago Cubs: Kings of the Slider?

The Cubs have talked a lot about how their Pitching Infrastructure, led by Tommy Hottovy and Craig Breslow, provides a competitive advantage on the pitching front.  However the results the past two years have not been especially strong.  There have been a lot of individual success stories, but because of the lack of investment prior to this year there hasn’t been a full pitching staff meant to win games as opposed to a collection of individual pitchers meant to be flipped in July. 2023 is y

Cubs Climb Power Rankings: How It Happened

Coming off a third consecutive series win, including the first at Dodgers Stadium since 2014, the Chicago Cubs are starting to gather some national attention.  Granted, they still aren’t being mentioned as one of the top teams in the league, at least by most observers. But many of the updated Power Rankings now seem to view the Cubs as a middle-of-the-road, potential Wild Card type of team. Of course, these Power Rankings can be more fickle than Sean Barber’s strike zone in the Cubs-Dodgers

Can 2023 Equal/Rival the 2015 Cubs?

Or more like the 2014 Cubs… or maybe somewhere in-between? At the end of the 2014 MLB Season, the Chicago Cubs finished sixteen games under .500, finishing in last place in the NL Central. During that offseason heading into 2015, the Cubs made radical changes, and that started with hiring Joe Maddon as manager. We all know the story behind that move, and how a contract loophole with Tampa Bay’s front office led to Joe being able to walk away and get hired elsewhere. Continuing on to the off

Why I Need Another World Series (Win)

For those of you who may not know me, I am Southpaw19 on the NSBB Forum. I run the annual Home Run Derby game on the Forum. My friends and family call me Josh. I am a family man with two beautiful daughters. The second of whom was only three months and six days old when the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series. That was a great year for me and my family. We officially adopted my oldest daughter that October. Our second was born in July. Oh yes, and the Cubs won the World Series! Of course

Introducing Dark Mode!

This is one of the most-requested features on communities we run and I'm happy to announce that Dark Mode is finally a thing you can use across the site! Dark Mode is a new way to use North Side Baseball, especially at night or in darkened rooms. Instead of the background being black text over white background, it's the inverse: white text over black background. Some people find sites easier to use and read in this inverted scheme and now it's really easy to toggle back and forth as needed.

Becoming a Cubs Fan

For an introduction, my name is Seth Stohs. I am one of the four founders of Twins Daily. I have been blogging since 2003 (I'm old), and Twins Daily started in spring training of 2012. I am old enough to remember the Twins World Series championships in 1987 and 1991. I love following prospects. And I love the history of the 60+ years of the Twins.  That said, the Twins games weren't on TV all the time, at least not in West Central Minnesota in the '80s. But you know who was on TV almost eve

Northside Baseball Tips & Tricks: The Stream!

Forgive the images, they're from Twins Daily but how the stream operates is identical. The new feed is pretty awesome and I suspect after reading this, some of you (particularly forum users) may set a custom feed as your North Side Baseball landing page. It's that useful. Instead of having to click through the (kinda insanely large now) NSBB site, you can tailor a feed to show basically whatever you want: select authors, topics you've followed, fellow users, unread content only... the list

North Side Baseball Tips & Tricks, Part One: Tables!

North Side Baseball Tips & Tricks, Part One: Tables! With this series of blog entries, I'm going to try to cover some of the features of the new site in a few paragraphs. Using the old site, as I'm sure many of you are aware, tables were basically unusable. That has changed! I'll tackle B-Ref tables quickly in this post but you can do similar things with FanGraphs or other sites that use table data (which is how almost all stat sites display their content). First, pop on over to Marcus
