  1. The replay wasn't even close. Horrible call.
  2. What'd Dusty do? Wuertz hard Encarnancion, and he almost had Pujols. Marshall gets a groundball and the inning is over before Puljos is up.
  3. Even the ESPN crew is saying he was only pulled because he was a rookie.
  4. Just a foolish time to pull Marshall. He has been throwing ground balls, let him try for the double play.
  5. i don't know where the idea that hairston is solid defensively at 2nd came from. i think he's average at best. I think the perception that Hairston is good defensively at 2nd is a result of him having some speed. People assume because Hairston is fast means he fields the position better than "slow" guys.
  6. Listening to them interview Jim Hendry in the booth during yesterday's game cemented in my mind that the Cubs brass believe JHJ will be the starting 2nd baseman on opening day. Hendry was pratically glowing about JHJ. About how he had come to ST in great shape and how we were really seeing the player Jerry could be.
  7. Those same injuries could happen in ST games. But if those injuries are happening in Spring Training at least they are happening when the player is trying to prepare and help the team that is paying his salary. Not to mention the fact that the coaches and trainers of a MLB team are going to be much more worried about keeping a player healthy for when the games actually matter, rather than winning a glorified exhibition game.
  8. In the abstract I could see where Prior + Patterson would be somewhat reasonable for Tejada + Good Prospect with the Cubs taking on the entire salary. However ignoring the idiocy of trading Prior, including Hill in this trade just makes it totally ludicrous. Regardless of what some may think Hill will actually do in the majors he is a fairly large trading chip this offseason based on all the reports around the league. If the Cubs really are stupid enough to trade Prior (and all evidence points to yes) keep Hill and build a package around him to get someone like Zito.
  9. I am willing to wait until pitchers and catchers report. I hate to judge any off season until it is actually over. Timing of moves varies so much, espeically is a trade based market. So before getting angry about the off season as a whole I will let the off season end. Now does this offseason look particularly positive so far? No, but there is still time to save it.
  10. If Hendry struck out on the better options I wouldn't mind Wilson. He would likely be cheap to trade for and his numbers look better than several other options. The real problem is the guy looks exaclty like Kerry Wood's long lost twin. It could get confusing. [/img]
  11. While I don't mind Howry on the Cubs the contract is too much. Of course I refuse to be upset about this until I see the rest of Hendry's offseason. If he can still signficantly upgrade the offense (at least one OPS monster in the outfield please) then overspending on the Bullpen isn't much of an issue for me this season. But if we have to skimp on the OF because of redundent bullpen arms then it will be most annoying.
  12. I could see the WhiteSox bringing in Sosa on a very small deal to be the DH. They could probably get him very cheap. The park is a launching pad. And the Sox, even with a World Series, always are looking for an attendence "draw".
  13. This part of the article seems to imply the Cubs and Furcal will reach a deal sooner rather than later. If the Cubs agree to a 5 year deal, the apocalypse is coming soon. 5 years works for me tho. Furcal's just entering his "prime." I think at the most the Cubs would offer is 4 years with a 5th at team option. Of course it all depends on how desperate the Cubs see themselves to be.
  14. Well at least in this case Hendry would be overpaying for a player who can help us.
  15. I do think replay should be instuted for close calls. What could someone possibly have against making sure the correct call is made? Someone would have to call for it. The umps probably wouldn't because of thier egos, and I don't know how well letting opposing managers replay things would go over, but you'd have to have someone in charge of replays who would call for one on a play like this and then have the umps look at it and review. i agree with you. Situations like these are why baseball needs some form of a replay system for real close calls. Robot Umpires!!! NOW!!! If they really wanted to there is the technology today to automate most every call on the baseball field. Frankly the sooner all major league umps are out of a job the better. Besides the NBA, MLB has the worst officiating.
  16. The pitcher did his job, he got three outs. He had to get four outs because of a ump that should be out of a job tomorrow.
  17. The pitcher did his job, he got three outs. He had to get four outs because of a ump that should be out of a job tomorrow.
  18. And those White Sox shills on Comcast Sportsnet are saying "of course it hit the ground". Really if this doesn't put replay in baseball I don't know what will. Horrible call on so many levels. The worst part seems to be the Ump lying about what he originally called. Guy should be fired tomorrow.
  19. Save totals don't tell the whole story. Remember, Alfonseca once racked up 45 in a season. As a closer, Dempster posted a 1.85 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 8.17 k/9 and .218 BAA to go with his league leading .943 save percentage. There was nothing about Dempster's performance to indicate he will be anything but good. Injuries are really the primary concern. His walks are a little worrisome. However that is balanced out to a great deal by the fact that he doesn't give up many extra base hits. As reliever he allowed a SLG percentage of .265 and a Ground/fly out ratio of 2.88. He isn't Billy Wagner or Mariano Rivera, but this season Dempster was the cut just under that elite level.
  20. Perhaps because the the money (7-9 million) spent on a "stud closer" can be better spent on other team needs (any of the outfield spots). Even if Dempster regresses slightly the difference between what he can give us and what a "stud closer" could give us isn't worth the extra money. If we are going to spend money on the bullpen I would rather spend signficantly less on a solid setup man for Dempster for something like 2-3 million and use the extra 5-6 million on our outfield offense.
  21. He does have me worried. I'm not nearly as confident as many others seem to be that this is something temporary. I've been losing confidence per outing. I don't recall him dominating for quite some time now. I don't follow this team as closely as some.... Is his velocity down some this year?? I know he's not hitting his spots like he had been in the past. I hate throwing this out there, but I'm a cynic so can't help it. I recall someone saying a few years ago that Prior was on steroids. Can someone assure me this isn't so. I haven't noticed a substantial weight loss. Nothing wrong with Prior's stuff. He has the same velocity and movement. He does lead the entire majors in K/9's for starters at 10.15. He is also 7th in the majors in BAA at .227. His stuff is fine, he just seems to be be struggling with his control at times. Seeing as how there is such a difference in his stats pre/post the broken elbow I don't know if you can blame "steroids".
  22. With the injuries to Cedeno and Walker I can almost accept playing Perez and Macias. I don't think it is the best way to go but it isn't suprising. But what absolutly drives me crazy is that Baker puts them 1&2 in the order! It is just mind numbing that a manager will put the two players with the worst OBP's in the two most important slots for OBP, i.e. hitting in front of Derek. Between Nomar, Murton and Barrett there are more than enough options for the top two spots. Heck even it if was just Nefi I could deal as long as Nomar or Murton was batting second. Sometimes I wonder if during the season Lee ever wanted to "accidently" sucker punch Baker because he has constantly insured that he is batting with the bases clear all season.
  23. I don't know that I am that worried about Prior so much as Baker's use of Prior now that they are out of it. If you look at Prior's game by game log his ERA is inflated by 2 or 3 really bad starts. The May 1st 8 runs against the Astros, July 7th 6 runs against the Braves, and Aug 4th 6 runs against the Phils. His ERA is his other 23 starts is 2.85. Now truthfully this compairson is a bit artifical because every pitcher has bad games, but in 90% of his starts he has pitched pretty well. Out of 26 starts this season he has 21 quality starts. Three of the non quality starts were the previously mentioned blow up games. One was a 5 innning game where he gave up 3 runs. And the last was the game where he was injured by the line drive. Saying all that I think Prior still needs to work on being more efficent with his pitches. I think he wastes too many pitches and could afford to be more agressive against hitters. But when you look back at this season you see a Prior who was darn near lights out before a traumatic injury to his elbow and still threw pretty good after coming back from it. If he can get a little luck next season and not have someone injure him I think we will see a consitently great Prior.
  24. At the risk of nitpicking, I would say the minimum is RF. SS could already be filled from within, either with Nomar, or Cedeno (or Nomar backed up by Cedeno). Now, I would prefer to make multiple upgrades with the lineup. But the first thing they must do is upgrade RF. If they can make a major move there, then settling on Murton in LF will be a lot easier. Perhaps I should clarify my statment. When I referred to LF, RF, and SS as places where they needed starters I was basically saying that these are positions where the Cubs won't have the 2004 starter under contract. Nomar is a free agent. Burnitz has an option that is never going to be picked up. And the player with the most games in LF for the Cubs this season is playing for Atlanta now. Unlike 1st, 3rd, catcher and hopefully 2nd the Cubs go into the offseason with these 3 positions the most up in the air. And they need to be filled either by an aquasition or by an internal call up. My prefered course would be to sign Nomar to a low base salary with lots of incentives while keeping Cedeno around to rest him regularly and step in if a major injury were to happen. In LF I would put Murton out there as the full time starter and hope Dusty doesn't screw with the kid that much. And in RF I would preferably trade for an impact bat (as none of the possible free agents seem to fit the bill). For me the offseason hangs on what the Cubs do in RF, they need another major hitter and that would be the most likely position to get one. If they just replace Burnitz's production while not improving upon it Lee and Ramirez will need to both have career years (again) for the team to score runs.
