Here's my take on the CUBS offense this year. Basically, I took ZiPs projections for the starters, and adjusted the counting stats for the bench players (while keeping their projected rate stats constant) down so that the team total for ABs is approximately where it was last year. I haven't seen anything to indicate a huge contract. He made 10.5M last year, and is one of the top two pitchers available in a weak class. He's going to get a huge contract. I'd like to have Jason Schmidt on the Cubs next year too. But not at the cost. I have to ask, why should I care about the cost? the only thing I care about is the marginal cost - ie the players the cubs don't get because they signed Schmidt. If the Cubs are even considering Schmidt at this point, they have obviously decided to spend whatever is necessary. Therefore, I no longer care about the cost. Schmidt is a great pitcher - I want him on the Cubs. That's the opportunity cost.

They did what they had to do to win this game, without showing anything to the Patriots. This had classic letdown game potential, but the Bears methodically beat a good team on the road. If anything, this game showed teams that you can't go into the Bears game thinking, "stop Grossman, and we win". Everybody talked about beating the Bears by forcing Rex into mistakes. But they just showed it's not that simple. This defense made Brady look silly the week before. I think this was a play it close to the vest type of game. They held almost everything back, and did the bare minimum to win. If I'm a Bears opponent in the coming weeks, I'm thinking long and hard about how I'm going to beat them, because there is no simple plan. That's a very good analysis. I think you really nailed it.
