  1. If the Cubs insist on trading Walker, then Kennedy is a very reasonable replacement and a defensive upgrade. Kennedy doesn't have great range at 2B compared to the top guys, but rarely makes mistakes on the balls he gets to, so he's dependable. Oddly, his RF has dropped off .4 over the last two years. The OBP is comparable. You lose about 10 HR and 10 doubles if you assume Walker gets closer to 500 ABs instead of 400.
  2. I was about to post the same thing. Tejada sounds like a little girl. Shut up and play, Miggy, you're getting paid $12MM/year to play baseball, act like a man and quit yer moping. Don't really want him based on baseball numbers, but his whining makes me want him even less. Let's move on. So there is no chance the media took off with an out of context quote that was attributed to Tejada weks ago, and has since continued to fuel the manufactured fire? I'm not inclined to pin the media circus surrounding this on Tejada. Often times in these cases, the original quote doesn't even come from the player, but an associate of the player. And in Tejada's case, there is even a language barrier to consider with the media.
  3. I like it. As long as the contract is risk/reward structured, why not take a flier?
  4. If I am the Red Sox, I want more than Miguel Tejada for Manny Ramirez.
  5. I don't see the Mets or Mariners realistically giving up either Heilman or Reed at this point unless the returns equal a critical piece of the puzzle.
  6. And one is a SS and the other is a corner OF. Couldn't you match up Sandbergs numbers with a corner OF guy too and make him not look as good? Granted, the player cost is a big difference but I don't see how comparing a corner OF with a middle infielder stats and seeing them as the same value. That's exactly what was about to point out. It's a meaningless comparison.
  7. There is no likelyhood that he will have to move positions. Why does age 31 equate to inability to play SS at the same level?
  8. I agree Prior is the better player but Tejada is not "vastly overrated". For a SS to produce 6 year averages of - .800+ OPS 118 RBI (avg) 30 HR (avg) - is incredible. An argument for age (31) and decline may be legitimate in terms of future value. But I wouldn't call Tejada overrated against his peers at SS by a long shot.
  9. I saw that one, but simply couldn't believe it. The Cubs shouldn't be adding any prospects to the Prior and Patterson for Tejada and Bedard idea. Baltimore is getting the better value. They get the best player in the deal and significant salary relief in addition (at least 5 million for 2006 even after arbitration, and at least 10 million for the life of the deal assuming they hold Prior for 3 years). Hill should be off that offer and the Cubs should be getting back another Hill calibur or better position prospect in return.
  10. This saga is tough to follow for someone who has been out of the news loop for the past week. Can anyone summarize the 'reported' deals? I've read at least 4 different flavors of this Tejada/Prior thing, and I haven't been able to distinguish the fan suggestions from reported names and offers. Thanks in advance.
  11. Jacque Bloody Hack Jones TM. :x Hendry just made all of his supporters (me included) hang their heads in shame. A 3 year deal now prohibits improvement in RF whn better FAs come along in the upcoming seasons. At least a one-year deal has an explanation. This was just stupid.
  12. I'm more worried about hoping Pierre lives up to the contract Hendry is going to give him than what those guys do in Florida. By the time Florida is back to contention, this Cubs team will be on to a completely different window of opportunity, and I'm just concerned with the current window now. With Pie in the wings, you think Hendry is going to give Pierre a new contract?
  13. Here we have the first on-topic post in the thread, deep into page 2. :) I think the other offer on the table is for Wilkerson myself.
  14. I didn't know ESPN had the rights to Vasquez... :P Seriously, Hernandez was a top of the trash heap pick-up for the Sox, and now suddenly he nets Vasquez?
  15. At least the 'Wood's salary is too high for a closer' argument doesn't hold much weight anymore :).
  16. You could talk about how the Sabremetric approach leads to regular season success, but post-season mediocrity :).
  17. Marte is a very solid late reliever. He struggled the times he was asked to close, but as a set-up man he flourished. A career MLB ERA of 3.20, with .226 BAA and over 9 K's per inning is pretty solid.
  18. I think that is a serious overstatement. Patterson's problems this past season aren't new problems, just exaggerated and exposed by a league that adapted to him. There are many folks around here that have had fingers corssed on this kid for a long time hoping he adresses the known problems. He does in practice, in ST, in the offseason, etc. But when he steps in that box, he just isn't disciplined enough to put the practice into reality.
  19. Franco is wholly unnecessary. You don't fill the bench for bat potenital. You need to first consider positions. The Cubs do not need another back-up 1B.
  20. When I saw Jones to Detroit I first thought Jaque and breathed a sigh of relief. Only to scowl again.
  21. Despite depressed value, he is still the Cubs 2nd best trade chip right now (behind Walker). And since the Cubs still have a need, it makes sense to move him.
  22. just dont swing at his pitches. he tends to walk in the winning runs that way. If I were the one with a bat in my hands, that wouldn't be a problem.
  23. I am much more worried that the Cubs now have to face Marte, though he is really a lefty specialist and the Cubs aren't exactly lefty gifted. Still, fastball-slider relievers are always problematic for the free-swinging Cubs.
