  1. Is Ruben Amaro the last of the old-school, grit>math GMs? Besides Generalissimo Loria of course.

    Castro

Russell's had TWO chances at shortstop at the major league level. And Deeg - you have no idea if Baez AND Russell are better shortstops. Baez may be more "athletic" but he's much less sure-handed than Castro. Russell, I don't know enough about. We've seen plenty enough of both Russell and Baez at SS to see that they're substantially better than Castro. Russell has much better range and hands, Baez slightly better range and a much stronger arm. If Castro were a star, I could see the case for not wanting to rock the boat - but this is a guy with a lifetime .730 OPS. He's not a star and never will be, and two of the last three years he's been abysmal offensively. He may recover and get his season numbers back to his career norms - or he may not - but there's no development curve. There's no sign of sustained improvement. http://reactiongif.org/wp-content/uploads/GIF/2014/08/GIF-incredulous-my-god-oh-my-god-OMG-shocked-Steve-Buscemi-WTF-GIF.gif
  3. Let's assume that trend line continues. How is four months of decent RF production worth five years of cost control on a high pedigree/value starting pitcher?

    Castro

The difference between them is likely negligible enough that it's nowhere near the problem you desperately want it to be. Castro isn't playing even remotely close to being bad enough that he needs to be moved off of SS. And, again, if someone has to go to 3B, wouldn't you want it to be the guy who probably has the better arm? You need a stronger arm for SS than 3B Yep. Remember when we tried Hairston at SS? Macias? "Past a diving Theriot"? Starlin has spoiled people.
  5. and then loria gets run over by a cement mixer. That would be too quick. Rather see him get dragged under a bus like OJ in Naked Gun 2.
  6. Blame Miklasz for writing it. But I stand by my comments on Heyward. 2012 looks like an outlier and his defense has definitely slipped.
  7. Nah. I watch him almost every night, and he seems like a guy who can't see the ball or someone's who pressing too hard. He's ahead of everything, so most of the time it's a weak 4-3 with an occasional 2B over the LF's head. Never opposite field. It's the Wainwright/Drew trade in reverse.
  8. Unfortunately, Generalissimo Jeffrey Loria is still alive. True, but it sounds like he's run out of guys with less stars on their shoulders to fall on the sword. I've heard Buster Olney & Co. talk about how many bridges Loria's burned on everything from All Thing Considered on NPR to the Artie Lange podcast today. I can only hope Manfred realizes what potential this situation has. Everyone hates Loria. He'd have a decade of good graces if he mans up and goes full McCourt.
  9. I don't remember anyone being thrilled with the trade when it happened, but let's see where he takes this You mean King Mozeliak went against the "Cardinal Way", by overreacting and catching a falling knife? Don't worry, if the rest of MLB has been paying attention to his horrific plate approach I'm guessing the Cards will have him under control for as long they want, or until Mozeliak gets fired. So they were reactionary and thinking short-term, something the "Best Fans in Baseball" have long blamed this franchise of doing, but because someone died, it fits the Cardinal Way. People dying seems to be part of the Cardinal Way. Wish in one hand and [expletive] in the other. Gotta feeling they'd be more OK with another ace on the staff than a (VERY) poor man's Jacque Jones. http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/bernie-miklasz/bernie-too-soon-to-judge-heyward-miller-trade/article_17e1197d-e357-5396-a019-013057b5c0da.html
  10. I used to think Loria was one of the great villains in sport (and he is/was), but he's kinda turning into what Francisco Franco was in his later years: just a pitiful, self-deluded fool.
  11. You both can look up the history of the United Video Satellite Group versus WPIX in NYC or the Turner cable conglomerate. Don't call me a nut without at least doing a little research.
  12. Given the history of the NFL in StL (and the MASSIVE mistakes made re: any big stadia built here in the past 25 years) I agree. But let's not act like the Cubs are on some pedestal of sports professionalism and long-term planning. If it weren't for the GemStar Satellite Group, John Hughes (a Sox fan BTW: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Only_the_Lonely_%28film%29) and Harry, (going back to the first point) where would this franchise be? You might just have easily been fans of the Tampa Bay Cubs, or the Trib would've had to stick up Daley like Jerry did (for a POS pre-Camden Yards stadium somewhere) Or, most likely, the Chicago Brewers.
  13. I've got a huge problem with my hometown's solution. "Hey everyone! Let's build a brand new, billion $ stadium on the riverfront in 2019, with no team guaranteed to play there! And we'll only charge taxpayers for half! Then, let's build it only three feet above the high-water mark from the 1993 flood, because that's "usually only a 500 year occurrence" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_Flood_of_1973 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Flood_of_1993 So only four of these "500 year floods" in the past 171. Great job as always Slay. Another job well botched.
  14. Your boy Jay: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2828/9550146613_f2aa1e6d13_o.gif
  15. You understood the gif. How many more weapons does he need?
  16. But sorry Mojo, Jay ain't [expletive]. Marshall, Jeffery, Bennett, Forte, and you rack up a 1:1 TD to TO ratio? http://www.randomintelligence.com/gifs/KennyOmega4.gif
  17. Per your second paragraph, I agree. Solidifying the O would've benefited anyone, Neckbeard or Jay. If you look up thread, I chastised Raw for claiming it was dedicated to Cutler.
  18. Mojo you and Sulley have not just been on the Cutler bandwagon, you two have been dragging it. Somehow anyone who has an alternative viewpoint on Cutler's value get's labeled a meatball, don't lie.
  19. Pretty fair comparison. He's definitely a poor man's Tebow. Prescott has more arm strength but he played like ass in State's two biggest games this year. I've yet to see him pass well against a good secondary. He is a terrific athlete though. Would probably make a good tight end. Well the last (very) poor man's Tebow went #22, so anything is possible.
  20. DGB or Cooper?
  21. If the rumors of them being so frustrated with Marshall are true, then no, I seriously doubt they go after him without Cutler. Look how they've mostly handled problematic players for a while now. And yes, I really, really hope the Bears wouldn't have been stupid enough to not realize the critical central importance of the QB to the point that they still had Kyle Orton in 2014. Well yea they probably have gone through Brady Quinn and Geno Smith by 2014 or something similar if they don't trade for Cutler. And whoever they had there they would have been scrambling to improve their QB production. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m41d7abTNc1rvmzlbo1_400.gif Be honest Mojo, you've gone full [expletive] on Jay. Dude's an OK QB going forward. Nothing more.
  22. absolutely, the Bears have historically suffered when he's been out because, well, the vast expanse of the great QB Wilderness. Why is there such a clamor about this? Jay is going to be treated like any other starting quarterback when the new coach comes in. It's not like coaches get to come in and pick a quarterback to fill the open qb position. the ones who do get ridden out of town quickly because, well, the vast expanse of the QB Wilderness and the bitter cold of its desolation. when Cutler is gone, my little lordlings, you will scoff at such winters as this when the snow falls a hundred feet deep and kings freeze in their castles the same as the smallfolk in their huts. when the white walkers move through the woods. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you had your tongue or a bottle of Stolichnaya firmly implanted in your cheek when you typed this horse [expletive]
  23. They hired Martz because they were trying to create a wide open fast paced scoring offense match Jay's talents. They fired him because Cutler got sacked a lot. Trying to get the most out of Cutler was the absolute right idea. But it didn't work. Time to stop basing moves on him. And the sole reason for hiring Shanahan would be to recreate the success they had in Denver for a couple years. Martz got the gig because of familiarity/friendship from the Greatest Show on Turf days . Nothing more nothing less. The rest of your post is spot on. Do people really think Shanahan has the power to turn Cutler into something he hasn't been after nine years in the league? What if/when it inevitably fails? You're back to where you are right now only it's two or three years later. Hire Shanahan if you think he's the best medium-long term option to sort out this franchise's myriad problems, not because you think he's "the last, best hope" to salvage something resembling elite from Cutler. I swear this guy is turning into this generation's Jeff George
  24. The sideline scuffles spoke volumes. Don't see how they can sell the Lewis/Dalton combo there another year.
  25. Please. A 4th and Mettenberger would be highway robbery. WTF would the Titans do that?
