What the hell does his strikeout rate have to do with whether or not you would be willing to promote the guy to AAA? because when you're striking out in 33% of your at bats, you really haven't mastered the level you are at yet. I agree that we should leave Jackson in AA for now. That said, how much improvement can we really expect in his strikeout rate? Even going back to his days in Boise and Peoria, he's never been much better than a 25% strikeout rate (he is currently 28% in Tennessee). On a side note, shouldn't strikeout rate really be based on plate appearances? Seems as though it unfairly hurts a guy like Brett Jackson who takes a lot of walks, versus a guy like Junior Lake that gets credited with an at-bat every time he gets to the plate because he doesn't take walks.
Does LeMahieu's promotion now "start the clock" on his arbitration/free agency timeline? What if he is immediately sent back down after Baker returns from the DL? Will his clock continue to run based on his initial promotion?
Once again, Russell gives us the old 4+IP, 4-5 R performance. How much longer will this go on? If the Cubs go on to lose tonight, I believe this makes us 1-7 with Coleman and Russell starting....11-9 with anyone else on the hill.
Such a difficult player to figure out. I still think he has the babip normalize a bit and ends up with good results. If he keeps the power up and the strikeouts down, he should be fine in the long run. Wasn't Vitters' babip low last year as well in Tennessee? Should expect a normalized babip from Vitters? Based on reports of his combination of great eye-hand coordination and free swinging, it seems he often puts poor pitches in play and would be a candidate for a consistently low babip.
Not a bad debut thus far - 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Final line was 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3K. I'm tempering my excitement since we're only one month into the season, but is this guy a top ten Cubs prospect at this point? Dare I say top 5?
Assuming his velocity is back after last night's performance, I hope he gets the callup for Tuesday night. We need some serious help in the 4/5 spot right now and he may give us the best chance to bridge the gap until Wells/Cashner come back.
Well, for anyone worried about Cashner's year over year jump in innings moving from the bullpen to the rotation, I guess this solves that problem....now let's just hope he comes back healthy. I really hope it is "very mild" as Hendry put it. More serious rotator cuff problems seem to have a way of recurring (see John Maine).
Anyone remember the 1989 Cubs video WGN created to the same tune? I still have it on VHS and it's one of the few remaining tapes I care about. A few of the 1989 memories included in the video: * Dwight Smith's hit to complete the comeback against Houston after being down 8-0 in the 7th inning. * Shawon Dunston catching a pop-up in short left field and doubling the runner off first base to end the game. * Mitch Williams getting the strikeout on opening day to win the game after loading the bases. * Rainout during the first ever night game at Wrigley. * Ryno/Hawk/Grace highlights. * Mitch Williams finishing off the Expos to clinch the division with Harry in the background.
Is anyone else getting concerned that we have Derrek Lee, Ted Lilly, and Xavier Nady's salaries coming off the books and we may not even have the ownership support to go sign Adam Dunn to a 3/36 type of deal? I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think there's another "big splash" we're targeting to make in the offseason (ala Cliff Lee). I believe when Ricketts said the team payroll will be slightly lower next season, he means a lot lower. Again, maybe I'm blowing things out of proportion but after spending marginal dollars in this past year's draft and now some curious articles regarding our ability to target free agents, I'm beginning to get concerned with the direction Ricketts is taking the team.
Top 10 picks in the first round are protected, correct? Meaning the Cubs would not have to forfeit the pick as compensation if they sign a highly regarded free agent?
Good question - if we're fortunate enough that Colvin locks down an everyday starting job in RF and Jackson progresses to the point where we have to find a starting spot for him in 2012, I would think that Marlon Byrd becomes a 4th outfielder....if the Cubs are faced with this decision down the road, its certainly a good sign!
McNutt continues to roll! I think he and Archer are both approaching top 10 prospect status within the organization. Any opinions on which pitcher projects as the better prospect? I would probably lean towards McNutt, but I think an argument could be made for either one.
Agree on the immovable contracts, with the exception of Silva. If he keeps pitching well as we approach the trade deadline somebody will be willing to trade for him. If I'm not mistaken, we owe him $8M next season which some team could stomach for a guy that could help a rotation down the stretch.
Very long-time lurker and first-time poster, happy to be joining the board. This thread supports a lot of the thoughts I've had regarding this year's team and potential moves that should be made. In terms of the starting staff, I'm in favor of exploring trade options for Lilly and Silva. I don't think either of these pitchers should figure into the team's long term plans and we could get some young talent and/or free some salary space in the process. As an added bonus, we would clear the current glut in our rotation for a guy like Cashner. Looking at our position players, I would be in favor of exploring trade options for Lee and Fukudome. Again, I don't think either of these guys should be part of the long-term plan and if we could somehow clear Fukudome's salary off next year's club I would be all for it. Give a cheap option like Colvin a shot in RF next year and sign a backup in case he falls flat (maybe re-sign Nady). Would this leave us exposed at 1B next year? Perhaps, but I think we need to get younger and I'd be willing to take a chance that we could sign a guy like Dunn or perhaps even get involved in the Gonzalez/Fielder sweepstakes.
