  1. Totally correct - the Hawks didn't know if Keith would become a 40-50 point guy before last year, so they decided to overpay for Campbell. But, again, if you look at where contracts are going for defensemen, Campbell isn't going to be so grossly overpaid in a couple years. I would rather keep Campbell for two more years and then deal him when his salary's appropriate to the market then unloading him for nothing this summer. And, again, what nobody wants to own in this discussion of dumping Campbell is that nobody's going to take on a $7M cap number without sending salary back. I suggested the Hawks buy out Campbell back in October, but his play has completely changed my mind on him this year. He's playing like a guy that's worth $7M. The problem shouldn't be with his performance on the ice, but his salary, and yet there are people on here that are trying to discredit his play because of his cap hit. That's ridiculous, naive, and either uninformed or stubborn. The Blackhawks cannot unload Brian Campbell for nothing and replace him internally. The Blackhawks cannot trade Campbell without taking a pretty good cap hit back in exchange, which kills any reason to move him if it isn't helping the bottom line. So, IMO, stop saying Campbell should go away because it isn't realistic.
  2. He hasn't made the dumb mistakes this year. You need to watch more hockey me thinks
  3. I could not disagree more. He's playing heavier minutes and producing more, and hasn't made as many crucial mistakes. I watch every game, most of the home games in person, and Campbell's playing at a top-tier level this year. We cannot replace him internally, and couldn't replace his abilities/production for less than $5M
  4. So you're saying the Hawks have a thin blue line, but they should deal Campbell? I'm not sure I see your logic... Campbell's having an All Star-caliber season. Moving him would not only hurt the depth more than moving two 3rd-line guys, but it would be nearly impossible to replace his value on the ice. Also, if you look at the Hawks' prospects, they have to top-shelf defenseman at the top of their organization named Shawn LaLonde and Dylan Olsen. LaLonde could easily replace Barker next year (Hendry already has for a week+), and Hendry could slide into Sopel's spot with minimal impact to the on-ice quality of the play. Then we would only need to bring on a rental for Hendry's bench slot next year, which we could do ont he cheap. Sopel + Barker are making $5.333M and could both be replaced internally. Campbell is indeed making north of $7M, but we cannot replace him for cheaper than $5M, and would have to do so via free agency. Also, we're not going to deal a contract the size/length of Campbell's without taking salary back, and we can't afford that. We could, however, deal Barker/Sopel for picks/prospects and not miss a beat. :hello:
  5. IMO - how to save the Blackhawks payroll next year A) buyout Huet http://committedindians.com/should-the-blackhawks-buyout-cristobal-huet/ B) Trade Barke for a prospect or two, or a rental during this season C) Trade Sopel for a bag of pucks this summer Thoughts?
  6. With guys like LaLonde and Olsen on the blue line that could be up as soon as next year, I'd have to think Barker could be gone. If Sopel keeps playing over his head, he could take Barker's slot and a kid could come up to be the 6th defenseman. I wouldn't mind Buff getting his papers, either. But buying out Campbell might HAVE to be the choice. Saving $5M per is a lot when you look at keeping Keith, Hjalmarsson and Seabrook here long term.
