  1. From the start of June through the post-season last year, Jake failed to give us 6 innings in 11 of his 24 starts. He only had three starts during the 2015 regular season in which he didn't give us 6 innings, none after June 16. He's given us at least 6 in both of his first two starts, without throwing 100 pitches in either game.
  2. Exactly how I feel. And I'm pretty sure he could dial it up to 95 too if he wanted to, tbh. Did anyone hear him on Waddle and Silvy the other day? They asked about his velocity and gave him an out asking if he's holding something back after a long postseason last year etc and his answer was something like "I don't really care what I'm throwing as long as I'm getting people out" Everyone kept coming to Jake last year with stuff people had been noticing, asking him what's wrong, how's he going to fix it, etc. And every time, he was like, "Whatever. I'm just going out and doing my thing, yada yada yada." We'll never get an answer from him about what's actually going on. He's the last person to ask. So it'll be left to a million people to posit ideas about his velocity this year.
  3. Then those two stupid losses are going to be really frustrating when we look back as we track down 117 wins.
  4. We are going to be so horsefeathering good this year. Better than last year, even.
  5. Instead of worrying about a loss in velocity, I'm going to look at it this way: What if I told you that we cloned Kyle Hendricks and he now throws 3 mph harder?
  6. He looks like he's trying not to over-throw, to me. And the command of his curve has been quite good. Yeah, I've got no issues with what I'm seeing. He's pitching well. He made one mistake at a bad time. But, he's pitching really well. His stuff is probably still filthy, even at 91-92. And maybe him taking a little off will allow him to regain his command, without losing much of his nastiness. Hell, Kyle Hendricks can do it throwing 82 mph. So I'm not super worried about it. But, he's a guy that been injured before, has unorthodox mechanics, has had trouble with his mechanics (last year), now is showing a drop in velo (even if it's due to trying to fix the mechanical issues), he's been bad in the past. It seems like too many red flags, long-term. He's not a Jon Lester that you just plug in and not worry about. There's always something that feels like it could unravel at any moment. So, you take his best seasons, which were some of the finest seasons in franchise history. And then you let someone else worry about all the rest when he is old and getting paid a trillion dollars.
  7. A lot of 91 from Arrieta today. On the one hand, that scares the hell out of me. On the other hand, he looks so much better than he did in the second-half of last year, and the results look really good, too. My prognosis: Take whatever he gives us this year (probably really good stuff), thank him for his great success in a Cubs uniform and stay the hell away from him this off-season.
  8. Isaac Paredes is 3-3 with 2 doubles.
  9. To follow up on this, last year Heyward hit a total of 30 balls at least 97 mph that went at least 320 feet. He just did it in back-to-back PA.
  10. Yep. A lot of 93. And the slider was mostly 88, and his slider was at 84 from the Busch readings. For reference, he's mostly been 94-95 with the fastball the last two years, with the slider being 89-90.
  11. According to statcast, Heyward hit that 99 mph and it traveled 380 feet. He only hit 11 balls at least 99 mph and 380 feet last year.
  12. That pitch recognition from KB... The 2-2 take was near impossible. Davies throws his best pitch, the one that he uses to get guys to swing at more than any other, and the one that he uses to get whiffs. He sets it up perfectly and places it perfectly. It was really just perfectly executed. And with two strikes... that's an auto swing. Fantastic work by KB.
