.520 OBP. Crazy. When following Gibbs last season in Boise, he started out terribly at the plate. (.096/.165/.108 in 91 July plate appearances.) But he really turned it on for the last half of his games. (.339/.387/.411 in August and .333/.500/.556 in September in a combined 74 plate appearances.) I chalked it up to the adjustment to wooden bats, or to pro ball or just simple chance (his BABIP was .125 in July, .431 the rest of the way). Whereas, I doubt Micah is this good offensively, I think he will maintain production closer to what we are seeing now than what we saw overall last season.
I love this analysis. Very smart. Seems dead on. And clearly, to me at least, Vitters would find it easier to learn to layoff those pitchers pitches if the talent throwing to him was better, thus his rather hasty promotion to AA. Now let's hope he can adjust. Given his difficulty in doing so thus far, I feel the chances of him doing so successfully are less than 50%, but if he does start making pitchers give him something to hit, he can be real good.
his OBP is probably up to .312 I know, no walks on the year. On this day, however, I will cut him some slack on that front. It's hard to draw a walk when you go 4-for-4. He's got 2 stolen bases as well. That makes 5 on the year against only 1 caught stealing. He stole all of 13 last year.
Nick Struck is doing his best Robert Whitenack impersonation today. Through 5, he's allowed 2 hits, 0 runs, struck out 7 while walking 1. His numbers on the season now stand at 19.2 IP, 21 H, 7 ER, 15 K, 4 BB.
Soriano LF Jackson CF Byrd RF Let Fukudome back up all 3 position and let him start 3 games a week (one for each position) or something like that... Fukudome would still get a lot of ABs this way and everyone would be well rested throughout the season. Plus it let Colvin start everyday at AAA to work on his swing and whatnot. If they were to bring him up, I think this would be the smartest way to go, but he's only had 47 ABs. I agree he is absolutely, lights-out raking right now, but let the guy have 100 ABs at least before promoting him. That's about what Castro had last year in AA before being brought up.
I wish that Ha wasn't allergic to taking walks, but if he wants to hit .415 I won't stop him. I'm starting to get behind the idea of aggressive promotions for guys with excellent hit tools and an impatient approach. Either they keep hitting (Castro) or they falter a bit and maybe find themselves in a position where they need to change their approach at the plate to find success. (Vitters?) Sometimes the struggle is necessary. I agree. It's the only way to makes sense out of the way the Cubs have promoted Vitters. And when you think about it, it's pretty smart.
Finally, an interesting pitching day. I'm excited to see how McNutt and Lopez do and even interested in Rosscup, too. And to be quite honest, TBA is probably the most exciting pitcher Iowa has at the moment.
Nice. Especially the GO/FO. Three starts on the year now, he's got 17 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 18/1 K/BB. He's 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA and a sick 4.33 GO/FO. If he can keep that up for another month or so, he'll see AA pretty fast. I like that Ha had another 2B. That's 5 on the year in just 43 ABs. Still no walks, though.
So far so good with Josh. 3 walks on the year to go along with 3 doubles and a HR. Brett Jackson got ejected in the 5th inning tonight, but not before extending his hitting streak. He has hit safely in every game so far this season.
Chalk one up for the Cubs. Archer threw 76 pitches in 4.2 IP and gave up 5 hits, 3 earned while walking 3 and striking out 5. His counterpart, Rafael Dolis, has thrown 85 pitches over 6 IP and has given up 4 hits, 1 earned while striking out 5 and walking none.
Yep, not pretty. On the bright side, Whitenack has pitched 11 innings, given up 6 hits, 2 earned, 0 walks and 15 strikeouts on the season so far with a fantastic GO/AO ratio.
Was it AZPhil that called Robert Whitenack as this year's Trey McNutt? Anyway, so far so good tonight. Thru 4, Whitenack has one unearned, no hits, no walks, and 8 Ks. Also 5 ground ball outs to 0 fly ball outs. Nice.
