  1. While the rest of us groan, a hundred bucks says NCCub just spit coffee all over his keyboard. Here's something to really groan about, McNutt was just removed from his game again after just 3 innings. I've got to assume he is on some sort of pitch count for some reason.
  2. Ridling continues to rebel against AA pitching hitting his 7th HR of the season. I'm so witty.
  3. Did we ever find out why he left his last one? No. I'm assuming it was a continuation of his previous blister problem until I hear differently.
  4. Has anybody seen him or gotten any current scouting info on him? BA's take has been mostly high-80's in past, but I don't think he was ever a guy they had reason to discuss much with scouts, so I question whether their info is even remotely current. I know he's got a curveball, and as we know from Micah Bowie and Marshall and Phil Norton, low-A hitters get carved by a good lefty curve. But I wonder if he hasn't perhaps matured some physically and hasn't grown a little stronger/faster? A good curve with a Bowie/Norton/McNichol fastball is one thing; a good curve with a 91-94 fastball might be quite different. Anybody know at this point? And do we know whether he's got just a fastball fastball, or is he a cutter guy against RHP? I know it's early, his BABIP against is ridiculously lucky low, and curveballers can lock in for a while but it might not last. But a 0.72 WHIP in late May does spark my interest and make me wonder if it's more than just a brief fluke? I was wondering the same thing, craig. Unfortunately, I was counting on you to provide that information. You're slippin', man.
  5. The surprising season for previously unheralded Cubs prospects continues... - Robert Whitenack went 7 scoreless innings allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks against 5 strikeouts on Tuesday. He now stands at 7-0 with a 1.87 ERA on the year. He will be 22 all season long and is in AA. - Jae-Hoon Ha was promoted to AA this week after hitting .311/.344/.523 in 151 ABs for Daytona, and he's still hitting in Tennessee. In his first two games, Ha has gone 3-for-9 including a double and triple. He'll be 20 all season long. - Justin Bour continues his hot hitting for Daytona batting .364 with a .773 SLG in his last 10 games. He has 4 doubles and 4 HRs over that span. Justin turns 23 later this month. - Austin Kirk threw 5.1 innings of 1 hit, scoreless baseball, striking out 3 and walking none. On the season, he's pitched 40.1 IP, allowing just 22 hits, striking out 35 while walking just 9. MWL opponents are hitting just .155 against him. Kirk turns 21 in a few days. I think he's definitely earned a tall, cool one with how he's pitched so far this season.
  6. He's not walking a lot, but he's also not striking out a lot either. His doubles are way up, but his HRs are up to. He just had such poor HR power previously that its not as noticeable. LeMaheiu's on pace to hit 4 times as many HRs as he did last season. I don't know what difference it makes whether he's doing it because of "Camp Colvin" or some other reason, the fact is he's doing it. He's raised his SLG over a 100 points from last season. I'm in wait and see mode as to whether he will maintain that over the course of a season, but when your IsoP is near .150, whatever your AVG is, it's not empty.
  7. Granted his OBP is only about .030 higher, but his K/BB ratio is solid at 9:5. And he's slugging close to .490 with 13 doubles and 2 HRs so far. Last year, he had 554 ABs in which he hit 24 doubles, 5 triples and 2 HRs. If he finished with the same amount of ABs this year, he'd be on pace for 50 doubles, 4 triples, 8 HRs and 94 RBI. He's doing this as a 22 year old in AA. Just curious as to why you'd call it an empty .349?
  8. IMO, he'll become a lot more worth following when he cuts down his strikeouts and raises his walks. He strikes out an awful lot for a guy who doesn't hit for power. And he's doing so at the lower levels. An IsoD around .060 is okay, but for someone who's value is largely derived by his speed, you'd like to see it be higher. He's just 22, so there's still time, and it seems like he can hit, but, for me, he won't be a top prospect worthy of excitement until he can improve in those areas. By all means, follow him, but he's not there yet.
  9. Rubi Silva? Seriously? Talking about rushing somebody. .285/.305/.358. Yep, let's promote him. toonster, somebody, help me understand why they would choose now as the time to move Silva up a level...
  10. If Ha has earned his promotion to Tennessee, and I agree he has, then Jackson has certainly earned a promotion to Iowa. If that happens, that would leave Nelson Perez, Ha, Ty Wright and James Adduci in a 4-man rotation that would seem pretty manageable. But when you add in Spencer, who would roll between 1B-OF, and Flaherty getting some time there as well, it will be an interesting juggling act, but not too difficult. Now if Jackson doesn't get promoted...
  11. I'm wondering who will fill the void left by Ha in Daytona. Kyung-Min Na was called up from EXST to fill Jackson's spot on the roster when he went on the DL. Na is hitless in 4 ABs at AA, so it's possible he gets sent down to Daytona, but is he's just 19 and didn't hit well at Boise last season. Daytona seems like a reach for him, but I understand he was looking good at Mesa, so maybe the Cubs feel comfortable sending to A+. Or... The only OFer on the Peoria roster remotely deserving for a promotion is Szczur. He's only had 103 ABs at Peoria this season, 129 overall when you include last year. He's done well this season but with no power to speak of going .320/.398/.369. I know the Cubs are high on him, maybe he gets promoted. Seems a bit quick to me, but I'm no scout and if he has the athleticism they say he does, he could be ready. In which case, Na could go to Peoria. This one makes the most sense to me. Any better scenarios out there that I'm missing?
  12. It's probably the latter because Jackson was only supposed to be out a week. Unless, they found that Jackson's injury is worse than first thought...
  13. AZPhil predicted Robert Whitenack would be this year's Trey McNutt. He might be right, but if Justin Bour continues doing what he's doing, there might be two out-of-nowhere breakthrough players for the Cubs this season.
  14. Kyung-Min Na is in AA. I'm assuming it's an emergency fill in type thing. The dude's 19 and hit .208 at Boise last year...
  15. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-hot-sheet/2011/2611741.html Thanks, CR. That's good news on both fronts, especially Jackson. Now if Colvin would only favorably compare to Markakis...
  16. McNutt out after two good innings. Is he just on a low pitch count because he's been out the last couple weeks and they're easing him back in?
  17. On the brighter side. Jae-Hoon Ha walked. His 6th of the year. He walked a total of 10 times last year. His IsoD is still pretty crappy at .032, but it's an improvement over last year's even more horrible .017.
  18. An update on some the emerging prospects being discussed in this thread. - Justin Bour, a 25th round pick in '09, continues his hot hitting. His line now reads .305/.385/.619 in 118 ABs. He's hit HRs in three consecutive games raising his season total to 9. He hit 12 all of last season in 475 ABs. - Jae-Hoon Ha added a double tonight. He's now slugging .546. He'll be 20 all season and is currently in High-A. - Micah Gibbs is hitting .359/.461/.469 over 64 ABs in Peoria. If he's still producing similar numbers in another 60 at bats or so, I'd like to see him bumped up to Daytona. The color commentator's kid isn't exactly lighting it up.
  19. Just saw that myself. Oh boy... Between this and the reports that he's barely hitting 90, this hasn't exactly been a great start to his career. Understatement.
  20. Of course, the day after I post that Szczur has yet to be caught stealin so far in his pro career going 12-0. he gets caught stealing. Me and my big mouth. #-o
  21. Bour & Ha are at it again. Bour has 3 hits for the second game in a row and has hit a HR in three consecutive games. Ha is 2-for-4 and has hit his 9th double of the year.
  22. Just saw that myself. Oh boy...
  23. Justin Bour's hit streak continues. AVG is now close to .300.
  24. I'm no scout, but I've been following minor league stats pretty closely for about 20 years. His contact numbers strike me as good enough and more importantly consistent enough to be a legit major league prospect, but he needs to improve his IsoD. I think the question at this point is whether he can play 2B well enough to stick. I wish I knew more about that. Can anybody else speak to that?
