  1. Surely you're aware that UZR for first basemen is a joke. Surely you're aware that Thome suffered a season ending injury in his last year with the Phillies, and it was widely known that they were forced to trade him to the AL due to his inability to play the position. Surely you're aware that he's played 4 games at the position since leaving Philadelphia (including zero games played at the position when he was traded to an NL team) instead giving backup starts to Ross Gload, Darin Erstad, Rob Mackowiak, a hated Nick Swisher, Brendan Harris, Jose Morales, Mark Kotsay, Josh Fields, a terrible Wilson Betemit, and Luke Hughes. If you think Thome's career would have been over after 2005 if not for the DH, well then I'll just chuckle and move on. If you don't think that, then I'll repeat what I said earlier -- speculating about how much, and how well he would have played at 1B is pointless. The larger point remains, though -- as long as baseball uses a DH, then you can't demerit guys that play there.
  2. So what? Why are we accepting this as fact?
  3. Because when you're talking Hall of Fame you're discussing their spot in baseball history. If the DH is the only thing keeping the guy on the field/stopping them from being an abomination in the field then it needs to be held against him. You can't assume "the DH is the only thing keeping the guy on the field/stopping them from being an abomination in the field". That isn't fair. I can certainly do it with people for whom the DH is the only thing keeping the guy on the field/stopping them from being an abomination in the field. Surely you're aware that UZR had Thome as an above-average 1B his last few years playing there regularly. You can assume Thome would be an abomination or whatever, but you'd be a fool to do so. Nobody knows how much, and how well he would have played 1B in the absence of the DH. So the most reasonable thing is not to make groundless assumptions.

  5. Curious what kind of offers you think Zambrano would be getting if he was a free agent.
  6. They aren't issuing anything, it's Levine quoting an anonymous source. Or if you prefer, Ricketts' PR guy answering a question asked of him. Fair enough. Where this is coming from has been ambiguous all along.
  7. The Cubs have the full attention of their numerous beat reporters and TV partners whenever they want/need it. A few hours is all it takes to schedule a presser.
  8. How many times can they go down that road? Forever? Because what you just said, Hendry and the Cubs have said before about Z. They've been covering for him for years, keeping things in-house as much as possible. They can't cover it all up, though. It wasn't anyone with the Cubs that made this latest incident public. Do you believe you can ever reach a point with a player where there are no more second, third, fourth, chances? Because Z has burned through a lot of em, and still nothing has really changed.
  9. It's possible that the entire Ricketts family is involved in discussions to either fire Hendry or hire Gillick/team president and it was Tom who decided to take a personal tour of the farm systems to get an up close look of how things are being run there. He then could be reporting back to the family and they use that report in their discussions on whether or not to make whatever change they're considering. The key to the report is "within" 10 days, so it could be anytime within that time frame - it doesn't have to be a full 10 days if they make this hypothetical decision sooner. It still begs the question of why they're issuing this "we'll have something to talk about next week" announcement. Say nothing until you have something to talk about, then talk about it.
  10. The only one that doesn't make me sick to my stomach is the Adam Dunn proposal. Sure, I'd prefer Fielder or Pujols, but if they don't plan on spending the money, I'd much prefer Dunn over Carlos Pena, despite Dunns 2011 numbers. A return to playing the field, the NL, and Wrigley Field could be just what the big guy needs, plus Z reportedly has a great relationship with Ozzie Guillen. You should be sick to your stomach already. All of those trades seem better than the alternative, which is to release Z. This thing is now beyond the kiss-and-make-up stage. I just can't see a silver lining here. Sure, miracles can happen, but what GM in his right mind is going to give us anything of value and/or pick up a good chunk of his salary? I don't think we release him and just outright eat all that money, but it's not like trading him is going to be a hell of a lot better. Of course there's no silver lining. It's all about damage minimization now. Some sort of trade is the path to achieving that. Releasing him maximizes the damage.
  11. This whole thing is kinda bizarre. I'm just trying to envision what it is they can announce/discuss in 10 days, that they can't talk about right now. It's not like a firing fits into that mold. Or a hiring either.
  12. Or, Ricketts is doing the MBWA thing. What better way to evaluate Flieta?

  14. Top 10 in career HRs (with no PED baggage) = slam dunk.
  15. Organizational lack of impact bats in majors and minors Hole at 1b next year Tons of money coming off the books Two impact bat 1b on the market, with few major markets besides us needing them, both of them coming from major divisional rivals who would be in big trouble without them Those divisional rivals might be in even bigger trouble if they keep them and they eat up 1/4 of their payroll. I've said a few times: the Cards benefited tremendously from Pujols' underpaid, superstar years. Now let them suffer through his overpaid, decline years.
  16. What a complete non-story. Of course there's concern.
  17. Why the heck would the MLBPA give a crap about Zambrano retiring? It doesn't set any sort of precedent that would impact anyone else in the future. Pujols is going to set the bar, so obviously MLBPA wants that bar as high as possible. There's no bar with Zambrano. If he doesn't want the money he negotiated for, BFD.
  18. How has management overreacted? And what would be the proper reaction?
  19. Z may or may not be back with the Cubs, but that money ain't freeing up. It's a wonderful thought, but forget it. I can't imagine Z or anyone else walking away from $20+M, and the Cubs have no chance of getting out from under it if he's ready/willing/able to play.
  20. Operative word -- threatening. It's an idle threat. He could have said, "do it again AND I'LL KILL YOU!!!". Same diff. Neither is actually going to happen, so quit taking it literally.
  21. Do you follow college hockey? Seems like you'd enjoy it.
  22. I love hockey, but the fighting is stupid. The argument has been made that allowing fighting keeps hockey safer. Maybe you knew that.
  23. Yes, allegedly. That's what makes the pitcher in question a lunatic. Before popping off about throwing at someone's [expletive] head, you should probably use some common sense. But it's not "allegedly" in the White Sox' mind. They know what they saw and are 100% convinced it's happening. This "lunatic" you speak of confronted the player verbally, and told him to cut it out or else. What would have been the common-sense response? To not say anything at all. It's beyond ridiculous that a Man In White could pick up the signals from 400 feet away. So your position is that the entire scenario is inconceivable, and the pitcher is a lunatic for imagining things that couldn't possibly be real.
