Well, we have win number 1 under our belts. Tomorrow, weather permitting will be the Cubs opportunity to climb above .500 for the first time since the pre Starlin Castro era. To make it happen, they'll have to go through another mediocre Pirates pitcher, Ross, or maybe its Russ..no, its Ross Ohlendorf. http://www.sportsgrindent.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/RussOhlendorf.jpg Dont have his stats on hand, but hes not a particularly good pitcher by Major League standards. I'll add a few positives - Soto looking good, Pena playing excellent defense and Quade making sense. Pena will catch on. Getting him out of the AL East may just save his career. I'm not worried about Aramis yet. He had a decent day yesterday. Look at it this way - if we can win on the shoulders of Sori and DeWitt, think where we'll be when Byrd and Pena wake up. It goes back to 2010. The offense as a whole was decent enough, Castro, Soto, Fukudome, Byrd, and Soriano all had solid seasons, but the problem was the lack of production at the heart of the lineup. This season, we will need some production from the 3-4 spots, whoever they may be in the long run.

An 0-2 record at the hands of the Pirates makes it feel much worse too. :? Its more the fact that the offense has been absolutely helpless vs. mediocre at best pitching than the 0-2 record, which is meaningless at this point.

Because he can't hit righties for the life of him Which is why when the Pirates made the pitching change they should have burned Johnson and put in someone who can.

On the bright side, I really like the back end of our bullpen, but its irrelevant if we never get to that point in the game with a lead.

Pena, Kouske, and Grabow are gone. Wood possibly, depending on this year. Shark's option won't be picked up and Rammy will probably hit FA. If we don't get AP, Pena is back IMO. That is a pretty big assumption considering we have no clue what kind of performance Pena will deliver this season. If we don't get Pujols, there is still Prince. The other intriguing situation is either Kila or Billy in Royal Land. If the 2012 Cubs are going to compete next year, they will need a massive upgrade, and the only potentially available players I can think of who can make that happen are Pujols, Fielder, or King Felix. Perhaps David Wright.

I didnt know where else to post this, but I was looking at the Cubs minor league rosters, and I dont know how concrete these are, but they have Chris Carpenter in AA. This doesnt seem right, considering hes argeuably the most major league ready of our minor league pitchers. Certainly over 47 year old JR Mathes, who they may as well convert to a loogy, give a September cup of coffee, and cut the chord.

Ricketts has overplayed his hand. Ticket prices have gone from merely unreasonable to absolutely obscene. If you look back at some of the old games they sometimes show on CSN with Harry they will celebrate 25K in attendance and 2 million for the season. I wonder if in a few years we may go back to that. They should be able to sell ~25,000 season tickets into perpetuity, so I don't think we'll go back to the 1980s definition of success anytime soon. However, by pulling stunts like pricing bleachers for $80 out the door, they've driven the urgency out of the market. In years past, people would buy up April weekends because it just might be the only way to get weekend tickets. Not any more. If July and August come, and the Cubs are well out of it, I wouldnt be surprised if people arent willing to pay those kinds of prices.

According to MLBTR, the Cubs released 2008(I think) 2nd rounder Aaron Schaefer, who I for one though was doing pretty well for himself.

Darwin Barney is going to become the new Ryan Theriot, not because of what he is, but because management will treat him as more than that. Darwin Barneys probably as good as any utility infielder/backup SS in the league, offessively and defensively, and I can see him having a solid 8-12 year big league career, likely spread amnogst 4-6 teams. Theres really no need to send him back to the minors. He is what he is and what he will be.

Don't forget "Ballgame". Although it sucks that it's another tough loss to open the season, I have faith in Z tomorrow. We'll be a .500 team by tomorrow night. I wonder why all of a sudden we can't beat the Pirates. Well this year the issue is that they are decent, or at least better than years past. I really like their offense in general. At least we have a few years left of being better than The Astros.

The two homers really killed what was otherwise at least a decent outing. He looked very sharp through 4, then came the 5th, and well, just refer to the 2008 NLDS

That's not the bright side when the half that we're through is the good half Sadly, the good fourth is well behind him, followed by the slightly serviceable fourth. I think were hitting Rowand territory.

Hopefully good Z and Garza show up this weekend. Really don't want the season to start off losing a home series to the Pirates.
