  1. I agree to an extent, but if Soriano is moved we have this to look at for FA's: Beltran will still probably fetch $10 mil per year, albeit for a short contract. Cuddyer could be an interesting option, but will probably also fetch more than Sizemore will get. I think of everyone else on the list the only other person who pops out (Not counting Swisher as he'll likely be retained), is Josh Willingham. He would probably come cheaper than Sizemore as he's generally flown under the radar. He needs to get out of Oakland. Yeah, I might be on board for Willingham instead. He'd probably be cheap and productive. He'll be 33 though, kinda older than I thought he was We could go with Colvin, Jackson, Byrd across the outfield, and if Colvin keeps falling on his face, make a midseason trade if we're in it. I wonder how much Jason Kubel would cost. Didn't know he was an FA. And not that I'd want him, but you can strike Francoeurs name from the list. The Royals gave him a 2 year extension.
  2. As long as the GM isn't among those meat heads, I don't see why that's anything to worry about. If they decide to pass on the Fielder/Pujols sweepstakes, I don't think it will have anything to do with a 29 year old career minor leaguer having a hot month and change.
  3. Todays just crazy. Barneys OPS is nearing .700, which is pretty good considering hes Darwin Barney.

  5. I'd like him, however, it's not that out of the question that Kenny Williams job isn't as safe as he would like, and the Sox could try to hang on to him.
  6. If anyone still cares, The Cubs are losing 4-1 in the 4th, but hey, the Cards need it more than we do. Cubs have more important things going on than a petty baseball game.
  7. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-hot-sheet/2011/2612241.html I know I'll get [expletive] on by Truffle, Rob, and a few others, but I'm still very curious to see what he can do with another shot at the bigs. Do I want him as our 2012 1B? God no, but I'm still curious to see him. If he can play a touch of OF, he could be a decent bench bat.
  8. Gotcha. Classy move on his part. Now it's Randys turn to make said moves. I really don't wan't Spetember to roll around with Pena, Johnson, and Grabow on the roster. Moving Wood for value would be a bonus. With Flaherty and LaMahieu waiting in the wings, there's also no reason for both of Jeff Baker and Blake DeWitt on the team. Moving Z and/or Soriano would pretty huge, but if either of those happen, I suspect it will be in the offseason.
  9. Talk is cheap. Ricketts should have pulled the trigger months ago. Why the delay until now? Kenney needs to go too. The guy is a bean counter, not a baseball guy. I don't want him anywhere near an evaluation of anyone. I'm not as up on some of the GM prospects as some are, but I always thought the Twins organization has done a very good job of evaluating talent with a limited payroll. I got no horse in the race, just want the best person for the job. Yeah, why is Clown Kenney being retained? According to Boars and Bernstein on the Score, Kenney thinks of himself as a baseball executive and will be a part of the GM hiring process. What real GM will want to work for the Cubs if Kenney involves himself with the baseball operations??? Lol what does Crane Kenney even do that inspires so much anger? Exist? Something about the name Crane Kenney that makes one want to punch him in the face.
  10. I don't see why the two things have to be mutually exclusive. I don't see how they have anything to do with each other whatsoever. Hendry stayed on apparently to help get the draft picks signed. As a result, he admitted he didn't want to make any big trades at the deadline, instead leaving it for the next guy. So they are exclusive in that keeping Hendry allowed us to get the draft picks signed, but also forced us to stand pat at the deadline besides Fukudome. But for that connection to fly you have to assume a couple of things: 1) Randy Bush wouldn't have succeeded in getting some of the harder picks to sign, meaning Hendry was needed. 2) Another GM would have traded guys like Pena, instead of not making moves like Hendry. I dont see why he couldn't have multi tasked. It's been clear since well before the trade deadline that The Cubs werent going anywhere, so there was plenty of time to try and move some guys.
  11. I don't see why the two things have to be mutually exclusive. I don't see how they have anything to do with each other whatsoever.
  12. Hendry has a lot of friends in the baseball world. He may never get another GM gig, but he'll get some kind of executive position.
  13. Hopefully Bush will use his time wisely and swing some trades for Pena, Johnson, and perhaps Wood if he'll allow it and Ramirez if they decide he's not going to be retained.
  14. The 25 players on the team, that's who. OK, 24. Aramis Ramirez ss lazy and could care less and would rather be fighting roosters.
  15. Pre-contract Soriano and Pujols are not in the same category of "great."
  16. Jim Hendry is also the only Cubs GM who was given a bottomless check book or even the opportunity to build any kind of team, so yeah, he damn well better have had a better record than Jim Frey and Ed Lynch.
  17. No, of course I'm not expecting a contract like that. If we want Pujols or Fielder of course we'll have to pay top dollar. But I don't want to pay top dollar for a guy who doesn't deserve it, and have the contract be an albatross like Soriano's is now. But does anyone really DESERVE that kind of guaranteed money? With Aaron Rowand, for example, it should have been obvious that he wasn't that kind of player. Soriano, on the other hand had been a great player for his entire career, and carried it into his 1st 2 years as a Cub. He was the same age as Pujols is now when he signed the deal, though never was the player Pujols is. It's a risk you have to take. After the mess that the team is now, I can't imagine them giving a massive deal to someone like a Michael Cuddyer or Edwin jackson type, but even with Pujols or Fielder, if you give anyone a contract of that length, it's hard tp predict how long they can hold out.
  18. It really is though. had he not had his tantrum because he did not want to pitch in the minors, and spent what would have turned out to be a single start in the minors, he would have been right back in the rotation as the #4 starter, the job he said was his to begin with. However, he chose to go for the greener pastures of the Yankess minor league team, which he never made it out of, and now he's doing nothing. But if that happened, we never would have got to experience the likes of Doug Davis, Ramon Ortiz, Rodrigo Lopez, and almost Dave Bush.
  19. Firing Hendry is not much of a stamp. It all depends on who he hires. Shhh. The new GM of the Cubs has been announced as Not Jim Hendry, and he can do no wrong.
  20. Running a top 3 baseball market team with a top 5 payroll in a division full of small market teams? I can't imagine how there'd be interest in a position like that. Particularly after a press conference where the owner states flat-out that it's the GM's job to sign players and make baseball decisions and that the new GM will have carte blanche to hire whomever he wants. Did Ricketts really say that in regards to players or just personel, because if that extends to players, it makes me very happy, and if neither Prince Fielder nor Albert Pujols are in a Cubs uniform come next spring, our future GM will waste no time finding his way onto the [expletive] list. I don't know if you want to give an incoming GM that much power. I just fear another Soriano-type contract if you hire the wrong guy. Carte blanche within reason, yes. Give him the benefit of the doubt? Sure. But throw a ridiculous contract at a guy who doesn't deserve it? The owner needs to nix that. What are you expecting? 7/150 for Wilson Betemit? If we want Pujols or Fielder, it's probably going to take a bigger contract than the Soriano one. IMHO, it's what has to happen.
  21. Re-read the thread. Too long. I mean basically what he said about spending on the big league club and what not.
  22. And in other news, there will be a baseball game played today.
  23. Would anyone be kind enough to give me a basic jist of the rest of the press conference, other than the Hendry being gone part?
  24. Id be willing to bet the Hendry has a new job in baseball by the winter. Doubtful he'll ever be a GM again, but he'll get a job.
  25. Yes, but a good GM can get creative with the contracts, as the Soriano, Zambrano, and Dempster money will be coming off the books between '13-'14, so there can be a bit of backloading.
