Tonight's game was a perfect microcosm of the Cubs' season, outfield-defense-wise. Pagan totally blows a catchable ball in LF, Pierre can't make the throw from CF to 2nd with less than 3 bounces, Jones lets one get over his head (it didn't even make it to the warning track) then throws an offline 6-bouncer to second on what should have been a fairly easy play at second. And Murton also throws an offline 3-bouncer to second on a play that might have been made. Hendry pays lip service to defense to rationalize moves like the Izturis trade, but our outfielders are pathetic. Sure, there are worse butchers in the outfield (Dunn, Manny), but the worst of them at least give you something with the stick.

I think the Cubs need to consider shopping Carlos Marmol. He's got good enough stuff that some GMs might overpay, and his lack of control is a killer. The last thing the Cubs need is another pitcher who walks 4+ per 9. Jim Hendry needs to realize that if you're constructing a defensively-oriented ballclub, you need pitchers who hit bats. Like the saying goes, you can't defend against walks.

Ronny's my favorite Cub of all time, and it breaks my heart that he's not in the Hall, but I think it's time for him to step down from the booth. He's never been anywhere near as great an analyst as he was a ballplayer, but his performance of late has been awful. Stating the obvious, monosyllabic grunts instead of analysis, even being plain wrong in his statements.... If it weren't for the very underrated Pat Hughes and his joy in needling Ron, I'd give up listening to Cubs radio broadcasts entirely. A hilarious example from yesterday's game: Talking about the last time the Cubs had 4 rookies in the rotation, Pat notes it was 1966, when Ron was playing, and lists the pitchers. Ron: Yeah.... Dowling I didn't know too well... He only lasted a half-season... Pat (deadpan): Says here you roomed with him for two and a half years. Ron (ignoring Pat): You... don't get to know a guy too well... when he's not on the team too long. Pat: And he was godfather to your two kids... I laughed out loud. Still, as much as the non-baseball back-and-forth cracks me up, it might be time to bring in a new analyst.
