  1. I think a good comparison is Darin Erstad's career. Outside of a .024 difference in slugging, their career numbers are similar. Renteria had good seasons in 1996 and 2002, a breakout season in 2003, and a bunch of average or below average years. Erstad had what could have been considered good seasons in 1997 and 1998 had he been primarily an outfielder. Instead, he mostly played first at that time, and his numbers were at best average for a first baseman. He had a breakout season in 2000, and the rest of his career has been littered with seasons that were either average or below average.
  2. Maybe Purdue should get Jim Beam or Jack Daniels to lend their name (and money) to their sports arena? "Welcome folks to tonight's Big Ten match-up between The Fighting Illini, minus their mascot, and the Purdue Boilermakers from The Jack Daniels Mackey Arena here in West Lafayette, Indiana." You know, the funny thing is that the term "Boiler Makers" was originally used as an insult against Purdue in a newspaper article after Purdue beat the snot out of Wabash in football back in the late 1800s. The name stuck, and the school adopted the nickname soon after. With all this talk about whether or not some of these school names are meant to be a tribute or not, Purdue's nickname originated as an insult from a sports writer. I should be offended...maybe I'll protest. If anything, at least IU and Purdue have very unique nicknames and didn't settle on something common like Wildcats. I think that's something to be proud of.
  3. It's a physical depiction of our enormous brain capacity. Now I could see how someone could find the term "Hoosier" to be offensive. Hell, I grew up in Indiana, and I don't even like being referred to as a Hoosier. :P Why is it that most the people in Indiana don't even know what the word Hoosier means? According to Merriam-Webster, a Hoosier is: "a native or resident of Indiana -- used as a nickname" There you go. Can't be anymore vague than that.

  5. For the most part, you're right. The issue isn't necessarily with the team names but rather with the iconography used to represent them. There are a few exceptions that have been noted in this thread: Redmen, Savages and Redskins are names that are offensive, regardless of the iconography. You could probably make a case that any school that calls itself the "Fighting " could be considered offensive due to the image that the word "fighting" creates in one's mind. However, I would wager that most of the team names are not considered offensive and that most people, including those that are listed as being offended, would be fine with the schools keeping the names as long as the mascots/logos that the schools parade out in front of everyone were a bit more tasteful. A perfect example is the logo of the Cleveland Indians. Does anyone honestly believe that many Native Americans (or any other people for that matter) would have a problem with the team name "Indians" if they were to change the logo to something more respectful?
  6. Hahahahahahahaha. We need to start that at Wrigley. It would be a golden shower at Wrigley. Enjoy Serena and remember you're our eyes and ears there! I thought we let Alou go. :P
  7. As much as I like Sandberg and despise Morgan, I'd have to say that Morgan was a slightly better player...just looking at the overall numbers. Sandberg had a bit more power and was better defensively, but Morgan was a much more patient hitter in terms of OBP and stole several more bases. I think Morgan's much higher OBP probably gives him the edge, considering that the rest of their numbers are somewhat comparable. That said, both belong in the Hall of Fame, and I don't think the difference between the two players is as great as some might claim. Did I mention I despise Joe Morgan?
  8. Lou Brown "I gotta hunch he's due."
  9. You don't win games without run support and some adequate defense behind you...and some help from the bullpen to hold leads. If pitchers could win games on their own, then Nolan Ryan doesn't go 8-16 in 1987 while leading the league in ERA at 2.76...Randy Johnson doesn't lose 14 games while finishing second in the league in ERA last year at 2.60...Roger Clemens doesn't have eight no-decisions in 19 starts this season with a 1.47 ERA and a .189 opponent's batting average. What you want from a starter is someone that gives you the best chance to win games on a consistent basis. I don't think anyone can argue against the fact that Clemens given the Astros a better chance to win more games than Brandon Backe has. But Backe has eight wins with a 4.87 ERA, while Clemens has seven wins while allowing 3.4 FEWER earned runs per game. A pitcher can't be expected to drive in all the runs, field all the groundballs/flyballs, or even go nine innings everytime out. His team's offense, defense, and bullpen need to do their parts, too.
  10. Would something like Febreeze work? I don't know if it would damage the jersey/autograph in any way, but it would probably get rid of the smell.
  11. If the Cubs are "cheap" with the payroll they have, then that makes about 25 or so other teams extremely stingy with their money. The Cubs aren't "cheap." They just haven't spent wisely in certain areas. Big difference.
  12. Right next to the Purdue Cham.... nevermind. :P Don't bring the Boilers into this. That's just a cheap shot.
  13. Wastra, How's it going? I was bmswick on the espn board. I read a lot of the posts here, but don't post very often. It's amazing how bad that other board is these days. It's not the same without you, sorrygm, Knightlife, goony, V, UK, raw and some of the other former regulars.
