  1. just saying nothing. This isn't Miami. The Cubs don't struggle to sell tickets because of weather problems. April/May tickets were available at the ticket booth for many games this year and years prior. Sellouts occur durng the warm months, rarely before. when the cubs aren't awful, sellouts (or very close to it) happen plenty in April and May. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/2008-schedule-scores.shtml The April attendance in that year (2008) averaged ~38,100, a full 2,000 tickets short of a sellout and I included the attendance figures that were over the listed capacity (assumed SRO and a sellout). Are you really debating that people don't go to games in April/May in Chicago due to weather? The first few games of every season usually sell out but the rain/cold weather keep people away. attendance =/= ticket sales
  2. oh man if he leaves we should hire maddon to be our president of clubhouse operations
  3. that's just a rumor. i mean, for all we know, he could be big on steak and shake
  4. oh totally, i never really understood all the mental gymnastics everyone was trying to do to assume for absolutely no reason that the only reason he's not manager is because he pulled his name out for family reasons. this letter only makes sense if he wasn't the first choice.
  5. that's great, he had an incredible season by history's standards. he's still not an mvp. well, i mean, he IS, but i don't think he should be.
  6. that's great, he had an incredible season by history's standards. he's still not an mvp.
  7. I don't see why he'd have to score runs, but I'd think he should be a ridiculously good pitcher to get the MVP as well. score runs, as in, contribute other than being the starting pitcher in just 21% of the team's games. even then, he only went the distance 4 times! how valuable is THAT?!?
  8. i mean, he was an awesome pitcher and all, but that's why he won the cy young. does it make me a meathead for thinking that a pitcher should need to do more than be an awesome starter to even be talked about for mvp? like, score some runs or something?
  9. ehhh, i don't know about this. would this story be coming out if sveum were a white guy? i feel liken this just a "lol look at how the black man doesn't know what to do" sort of thing. very condescending. HAHAHA i just got to this
  10. OR maybe sveum was the first choice, and he released that statement because he wasn't...
  11. I disagree. If we applied a modified pitch f/x system that used high-speed video to track the movement of every moving part on the field, we absolutely could get to the point. We would know the precise speed and trajectory of any ball, we would know the fielder's position at the time of the hit, we would know how long it took them to not only break to the intercept but also how long it took for them to receive and transition to the throw, so on and so forth. for every single play. no more relying on human subjectivity, no more guessing, no more unknowns.
  12. lol did you just write that in the voice of jar jar binks?
  13. lol why did you save that
  14. About Berkman? About the move to the AL what about it?
  15. i hold no illusions about the fate of the nl rules, but definitely agree here i've always held out hope for a modified dh, where the dh would only be able to hit in the starting pitcher's spot. in every other situation, the non-dh rule would apply.
  16. well but what about this guy http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/alternatethumbnails/story/2011-09/23456406441600-20145204.jpg well sure, all baseball data is accumulated through observation. my issue is that, to my knowledge, there is no standardized system in place to accurately record EVERY activity on the baseball field a la pitch f/x (but not just for pitches). while we can certainly watch video and observe a player's reaction to a batted ball and how long it takes that fielder to throw the ball from the moment he receives it, so on and so forth, that activity is not quantified in a standardized way to allow for comparison and analysis amongst an entire field of other comparable data points. furthermore, gauging anything by radar gun, and especially the naked eye, simply doesn't provide the level of accuracy and comparability required. those tools might serve the purpose of a scout, but for those looking for information that isn't colored by the fallibility of human observation, it simply is not good enough.
  17. after thinking about this a little bit i actually think that uzr does account for position, at least it should, since it separates of'ers by position. i'm not sure if they're isolating position for context or relying solely on park factors here, but whatever it is IT'S NOT WORKING GUYS. yes, UZR does account for position - so Matt Holliday fares well not necessarily even because he's a good fielder, but rather he's good compared to Ibanez, Bay, Willingham, etc. but then that's all accounted for in positional adjustment i was speaking to the arm component of uzr, not the whole of uzr. i should have made that clear but i just wrote uzr cause i was thinking about at work and needed to spit it out.
  18. gotta love a writer willing to parlay his total lack of inside access by throwing out ridiculous, improbable scenarios like this and "the cubs should get the entirely unappealing assistant gm of the white sox"
  19. So, what, he's going to flip out and leap out of the dugout and start waving guys home? haha how hilarious is it that there are people in this world who actually think that someone's message board reputation is cause for deep, serious concern as to their suitability for an entirely different job. "SOME PERSON I DON'T KNOW AND OF SUSPECT OBSERVATIONAL SKILLS SAYS YOU WERE BAD AS A GARDENER SO I'M NOT GOING TO HIRE YOU TO FLY MY AIRPLANE" though i guess they are similar in that they both wear baseball uniforms

  21. if we kept the 162-game season and made it more compact by incorporating more double-headers, i'd be down with that.
  22. That's called extortion and it's illegal. It's not an official agreement, its just talking. If the Red Sox say no, the Cubs can't make things more difficult for the Red Sox other than keep persuing Sveum, which they have every right to do. If the Red Sox say ok and still demand McNutt, the Cubs can't do anything either. But they can discuss a scenario that is mutually beneficial for each of them and keep it between themselves no official agreement. If I say to you, "hey there, I see you have a new car. This is a bad place to have new cars. I hang out here so I'll protect it for you if you pay me 50 bucks. If not something bad could happen, and it probably will." we are just talking, it's not an official agreement. you guys should wear diapers on your face to keep this [expletive] from ruining the furniture
  23. yeah, sweet. now we can turn our attention to something important, like, who our baseball players will be! maddux was my fave, gotta go with the mustache and the pitching thing, but sveum will do.
