  1. Evenson will not be with the organization this year. Mueller was working out with Daytona the whole time we were there, but it doesn't seem to matter where pitchers work out in spring Training, so he is a possibility. Only a day or two now to see :)
  2. I had the joy to sit down and talk with Phelps parents who were in Mesa when Karen & I were there. The way his dad was describing the injury was that Mike would be off for a few weeks to strengthen things up, then should be able to play through the season and have surgery in the off season. Glad to hear that he is anxious to get back on the field again. Four days till dinner with the boys!
  3. As has been saiid, Mark is still in the organization catching. He spent September with instructionals and has been orking on his hitting. Also, from some of the pitchers for whom he caught, he needs to work on his calling of the game from behind the plate. He has been working out with Daytona this Spring and will probably end up there. He is fast as ehck on the bags, he just needs to figure out how to get on there more often. As an aside, let me thank you all for letting me participate in all this talk. My wife, who does indeed know how to spell Ryno even if I don't, has made me into a baseball junkie. I'm glad to get a chance to talk with fans, learn from you all, and participate in some intelligent baseball conversation. Keith, the Husband who now knows how to spell Ryno
  4. Samardzjia was indeed working with the Tenn pitchers when I saw him on Friday. Also on Friday, Jody came up and spoke for a minute or two with me. I asked him to PLEASE spair some talent for Rhyno and Peoria. He laughed, then in all seriousness said that Rhyno was going to receive some players that Jody wished he could have. Although I am not yet familiar with the names, I watched quite a bit of Rhyno's practices and the guys are playing well together. Most of the team from Boise is sticking together thus far, which bodes well for Peoria next year. Pawelek was throwing for the most part with Daytona, although as Karen stated we noticed the pitchers were mixed up quite often. The only time that the pitchers seemed to be with their "teams" was when fielding drills were running, and Pawelek was with Daytona then. We should get a little better picture as to who is looking where during Saturday's games.
  5. Well, it's not looking good... listened to the Chief's game and it sounds like some of the plays were blown. There were no names released for the umps who called the game (fear of retribution?), and all that was said is that they were Independant local umpires. Will the league move these guys around to have fair and impartial officiating, or will the same crews work at the same parks all the time? Finally, I Can't help but think that there'll be a decline in attendance @ some parks when the word gets out... how many "good union people" are going to boycot the games until the strike is resolved?
  6. I met him for the first time in Kane County. We were sitting down by the bullpen and I saw him sitting down. This was around the time when PAtterson was on the DL. I asked Walt how EP was doing and we got to talking. About 15-20 minutes later he apologizesto me that he has to go to work and can't continue to talk. Class act all the way :)
  7. Thanks for the info. I really liked Walt and his family, and am glad he was picked up.
  8. Not sure if anyone will know this, but I heard some noise that Walt Nolen was picked up by the Tampa Bay organization after his release from the Cub's organization (started in Peoria last year, got promoted right up to AAA). Can you confirm this?
  9. Oh man! We missed you by one day. Karenmac & I We were in Mesa @ the practice field on the 16. Saw some practice, but everyone was floating from field to field. We were back on Saturday the 18 again and they had some division done. Talked a lot with Mark Reed and he was pretty sure he'll be up our way. Carter was working out on the same team. Talked with Matt (last year's trainer) as well as Tom Pratt. All were excited about the new season coming up, and all seemed to think we would have a great group in Peoria once again. Like you said, the pitching this year looks like it should be good. Most of the guys had only started throwing a couple of days before we saw them, but they still looked really promising. Sorry, I am horrible with names, so I can't remeber all I saw. Looking forward to seeing you soon Nate.
