  1. I agree. I'm not positive he's a bottom of the rotation guy though. The thing about Padilla is his stuff was always praised as a reliever with AZ. When moved to the starters role he was pretty good right away, with an ERA+ of 116 and 114. The thing is he went from a reliever to a 200 inning starter. In 2000 he threw 80 innings. In 2001 it was 115. In 2002 and 2003 it was 206 and 209. Then he got hurt in both 2004 and 2005, and became a below average pitcher (although not terrible). He seems to be healthy in 2006 and is pitching well. His career ERA is still below 4 in both the minors and major leagues (oops, actually his major league ERA has bumped up to 4.02 with his season in Texas). I think he's as close to a lock for a good 2007 as you'll get from any free agent pitcher, and will most certainly be better than a 5th starter. At 29 he's young enough to still put together 4-5 really solid years. I'm guessing Texas will try and resign him, but I think he's exactly what the Cubs would be looking for.
  2. He's already on the 25-man roster. I believe those are relavent even during the offseason, and he won't be on the DL in the off-season. The Cubs can't just give him a non-roster spring training invitation. I don't know how the 25 man roster would be relevant in the offseason-what happens if 5 people end up on the DL at the end of the season? Does that mean 30 people are on the 25 man roster? I think that the 40 man roster is the only one that is needed during the offseason. I don't believe teams get a DL exemption for the roster in the offseason. I'm pretty sure that at some point early in the offseason the Cubs have to have the 25 man roster set, which might mean sending some guys with options back to minor league rosters, officially, and not offering arbitration to unsigned veterans they want to get rid of. Given that Rusch is signed through next year, is out of options and has enough service time to refuse a minor league assignment, he will count against both the 40-man roster and 25-man roster throughout the offseason, affecting other moves that could theoretically be made. A release would change all that. "Each Major League Baseball team maintains both a 25-man roster and a 40-man roster of players, year-round. The 25-man roster is the list of eligible players who may play in a game. The 40-man roster includes the 25-man roster plus players in the minor leagues as well as players on the 15-day disabled list (see below). From September 1 through the end of the regular season, active rosters are expanded to a limit of 40 players; thus, clubs may freely add any of these 15 players to its active roster, giving them the opportunity to play in the major leagues near the end of the season."
  3. I'm sure he'll try something different, he always does. The problem is it might not be new, just a recycled idea from the days of old.
  4. Your first sentence makes no sense to me. I think it's rather easy to find the typical player Hendry likes. Hendry has repeated over and over how important he thinks defense is, and how unimportant he thinks offensive production (OBP/SLG) is. He likes guys who can catch the ball. Moises Alou is a completely different situation (a - he signed when MacPhail was GM, b- he's a corner OF so Hendry looks at the more tradition need for power out there). CI is an all glove no stick SS who won a Gold Glove, was an All Star and has been touted by many scouts for doing things like "driving in runs with his glove". He's also got some mind numbingly stupid stat like leading the league in hits for 2 months, and that is exactly the kind of BS stats Hendry uses to prop up players he likes. It's clear to me that Hendry likes Izturis and would be more than happy to have him start at SS. I would be shocked if he is moved within the next year. You don't think so? Fine, but you can't tell me I can't have that opinion of the guy. I'm pretty comfortable in my ability to read Jim Hendry. He doesn't acquire guys like Jones and Izturis with the thought of moving them later on. He gets them because that's exactly what he's look for.

  6. I would think it would be difficult for somebody to poll the loudest boo-birds in the stadium to find out their knowledge of pre-2003 Cubs. How did you manage it? What's with the sarcasm? It's obviously an opinion. It's hard to ignore these ppl after all. I might be making an blanket assessment of their knowledge of pre-2003 Cubs, but we've all overheard conversations from loudmouths behind us in the stands. One can get a pretty good estimate of their baseball IQ after a few innings - I'm not making a overly gross generalization here. Sorry for the sarcasm, that's just my language. I just think you've made a gross generalization with no facts to back you up. First off, younger fans can't be blamed for not knowing about the Cubs past all that much, I really don't know much about the team before I became a fan. I've heard the stories but don't "know" them like somebody who lived it would. Secondly, I find it hard to believe they became fans in 2003 and got passionate enough about it to freak out about this year's team. I'm sure they are mostly younger, you can make a pretty good judgement on people's age. But you can't determine whether or not they just became fans in 2003.
  7. I didn't even notice the headline, that's horrible. Has anybody commented on this part of the story? Is he admitting that bringing in Baker was a mistake and something he should be blamed for? They weren't winning when his contract was extended, not sure why he thinks he should be held accountable the next time around.
  8. I have no doubt that Dusty will go on a smear campaign. He's got to blame somebody for his failures and it sure won't be himself. I'm not sure it will affect too much. Chicago had a bad reputation in this regard long before Dusty Baker showed up. And in a league with decreasing numbers of American born black players, the 4 on the Cubs roster is actually kind of high.

  10. I don't think Hendry views Izturis as untouchable. I think he'd go in the right deal. Yeah, I think there are other GMs who think as highly of Izturis as Hendry. I'm holding out hope that he is traded to one of those teams for a legitimate major league player, and not another young Neifi. Will people get off this *#%$ "young neifi". Izturis isn't a "young neifi" ok. Plain and simple. Give the guy a chance to rebound from his injury. Okay, maybe he isn't that young. How about a younger Neifi? Career CI .261/.295/.338 (OPS+ of 69) NP .270/.301/.380 (OPS+ of 65) 2006 CI .249/.302/.328 NP .254/.266/.343
  11. I don't see the point in waster 25-man and 40-man roster space on the guy for the off chance that he'll be halfway decent next year. He's been bad most of his career, he was bad last year and he's been awful this year. I don't think it is smart to gamble that he'll be better.
  12. Tim Wilke...thank god he is running the drafts now. FYI, Tim Wilken
  13. Huh, trouble running, with our first and second string backs injured...that's really strange, huh Peter? Notice he listed his recent travels, they included roughly 16 training camp visits and a stop in Chicago for the NFL commish meetings, but he didn't go see the Bears. In between covering the crap out of the NFC and AFC easts, and hanging out with Brett Favre, it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't aware of the Bears RB situation.
  14. The problem isn't so much finding a new home for Jacque, but finding a way to convince Hendry to deal him. Jim isn't going to care that JJ has a crippling .312 OBP. He isn't going to care that he has a 632 OPS since the all star break. Jim is going to see .275 and 20+ homers and think he's got exactly what he wants.
  15. The difference is there is repeated evidence that he likes Izturis. The comparison to a GM that traded for and complimented Neifi is that the team was desperate to deal for middle infield help. The Cubs weren't desperate to make a deal when they got Izturis, they weren't desperate for middle infield help either. But more importantly, Hendry has talked ad nauseam about his desire for ball catchers and he has shown repeatedly how much he likes really bad hitters. It's not just a matter of him saying he likes the guy, it's that the player so closely resembles the typical player that Hendry likes.
  16. True, but Fassero wasn't hurt..Glendon won't get back before the August 31st deadline. Sit him down for the rest of this year, find out if he has anything left to become the long reliever at the start of next year-and then option him or cut him at the end of spring next year if he doesn't. Give him no chance to be a starter whatsoever. Didn't Fassero have injury troubles that year? The big difference is Fassero was a free agent to be, while Rusch has a significant amount of money owed to him. I could see a team desperate for starting pitching take a flyer on a guy like Rusch, but not when they'd also be forced to pay him $3.25 million next year. Plus, Fassero was coming off a good year the previous season (124 ERA+), Rusch was at 94.
  17. I realize that, I was just kidding.
  18. I don't think Hendry views Izturis as untouchable. I think he'd go in the right deal. I can't see him moving though. There's way too many pieces Hendry would part with before Izturis, and not many teams are going to really want Izturis anyway. Like no one wanted Perez? It took Jim a long time to get rid of Perez. I think he likes Izturis and is going to keep him through at least 2007. The question is whether he offers and extension or not.
  19. Hopefully the decision will be to not have them pitching on a daily basis.
  20. How is Murton going to get to a .380 OBP? He's short of .360 this year, and he has a slightly favorable platoon distribution(faced a higher % of LHP than if he played every day) and his BABIP is about 30 points higher than his LD% says it should, which means he doesn't really have much room for growth AVG wise. His minor league IsoD was a little higher, but his BABIP dropping 10 points is just as likely(probably moreso) as him improving those 10 in IsoD. Well, he is 24, odds are he'll get better, which would lead to higher numbers.
  21. No one's going to say "We picked up a guy today who is arguably the worst offensive player in the history of the game-World Series, here we come!" I realize the motivation, it's just funny to see it in practice. The question is always, do they believe what they are saying or do they just feel obligated to say that?
  22. And well worth it, especially for a team in such desperate need of the services he provides.
  23. One day later and they're 10.5 games back of the wild card with just 39 to play. Oh, and they don't have a deep bench either, they have an awful bench.
  24. I would like Nevin on the bench, but I can't see him accepting the salary that should be offered for such a player. He probably thinks he should start and get paid accordingly. Mabry? Definitely not. He offers nothing of value.
  25. I'm pretty sure the Cubs just locked up the 2007 division title. It's so funny to see people flat out lie when talking up their newest acquisition.
