  1. Little Wonders - Rob Thomas
  2. Anybody know if the game will be broadcast on the MLB Extra Innings package? Even if it's the Marlins announcers, it would be better than not seeing it at all.
  3. Anybody think it might be a position thing with Jones? .275/.341/.783 as a center fielder with very few AB's vs. LHP. Look what happened with Soriano when he returned to a more comfortable defensive position. If nothing else, Jones' recent success should make him easier to trade.
  4. Soto, Hill > Kendall,Blanco A good mix of vetrans and young players has proven effective for the Cubs so far this season. Depth at any position is a good thing. Zambrano & Hill seem to be a good combination. Whatever it takes to keep Carlos rolling. The rest of the pitching staff also seems to have benefitted from the departure of Barrett. Given time, I believe Soto will offer the best offensive production. It appears he will be a line-drive type hitter with gap power. I haven't seen enough of him behind the plate to offer an opinion as to his defensive skills. I do remember 2 great throws to second that should have been caught-stealing's had the tags been applied properly. Trammell immediately talked to Fontenot and Theriot reguarding that issue. I think the addition of Kendall was decent insurance policy for minimal cost, but clearly he will not put us over the top.
  5. Amen my brother...
  6. Excellent post. I couldn't agree more. =D>
  7. Pay him or trade him? http://x.go.com/cgi/x.pl?goto=http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2763803&name=FPT-2763803-021311&srvc=sz
  8. IMO, IF an upgraded bat at shortstop is aquired, Pie will be fine in CF. IF an upgrade at short doesn't happen, an upgrade in CF will.
  9. Marcus Giles would be fantastic, but I doubt Atlanta would non-tender him. Kevin Mench would be an ideal platoonmate for Jones in RF. Thats pretty much what this entire board has been wanting for the Cubs ever since Jones was signed. Wilkerson would be worth a gamble. LH bat, capable of playing all 3 outfield spots and 1B. He could play center and bat 7th moving to 4th OF when Pie comes up. Just think, if the Cubs could pull off these moves, Murton (and pitching) could be use to land an upgrade at SS. Tejada?[-o< Soriano LF Giles 2B Lee 1B Tejada SS Ramirez 3B Jones RF Wilkerson CF Barrett C Mench Ward DeRosa Theriot/Cedeno Blanco
  10. Not a whole lot different than "Mock Headline #2" IIRC. I don't think Baltimore would want Jones though, they have too many left-handed OF already. It would likely be necessary to get help from a 3rd team (Jones/Mateo to Colorado, Jennings/Marshall/Marmol/Izturis to Baltimore, Tejada to Chicago). I like the idea of Pie in center. Give him a chance. Bat him 7th in the order and hope for the best. If we could find a significant upgrade to Izturis at short, Pie could be hidden without a problem, he could even move up in the order if he produces offensively. I don't doubt Pie could exceed Izturis' .245/.295/.318 line from '06. That said, I would still do whatever possible to aquire Ryan Church or have Baltimore include a LH outfielder (Patterson?) in the deal. It would seem Soriano is going to be our RF for quite a while so... Soriano DeRosa Lee Tejada Ramirez Murton Pie Barrett Theriot Patterson Cedeno Ward Blanco Thoughts?
  11. Anyone think the Cubs could find a way to get Church AND Kearns without giving up J Jones? Play Church in center until Pie is ready and platoon Kearns/Jones in right. Obtain pitching via FA.
  12. This one stuck with me. I think a similar deal could still be done and fortunately, Aramis Ramirez is still a Cub. I would substitute Ceasar Izturis for Cedeno however. The worst part of this deal is loosing Murton. Thats where part 2 comes in. Sean Marshall, Jacque Jones and a prospect or two for Adam Dunn. Its a "buy-low" on Dunn and I think that might be enough to make it happen. Sign Cliff Floyd as a 4th outfielder and we're set  Soriano RF Theriot 2B Lee 1B Dunn LF Tejada SS Ramirez 3B Barrett C Pie CF DeRosa INF Cedeno MIF Blanco C Floyd COF Pagan OF
  13. I agree 100% on Felix Pie. He could continue to develop as a hitter in the #7 or 8 spots without a problem. Apparently his CF defense is not a question. IMO, Pie would exceed the 06' offensive production of Cedeno or Izturis and would be protected by a MUCH stronger lineup. I do not, however, think we can count on Julio Lugo signing with the Cubs. IMO a trade is more likely to repair the offensive void at shortstop .
  14. My original point was, if SS is an organizational weak spot for the Cubs(which it is), would it not be a good idea to trade up if possible? Miguel Tejada is probably the best SS availible in trade but at what cost? Texas would want a ton for Michael Young and the Cubs can ill afford to give up a bunch of arms without getting a starter back in return. Going the FA route would be OK but, after looking at Julio Lugo's stats vs. the NL and his potential pricetag (3/4 years @ $8/9M), he seems an awful risk. BTW Lugo's career best fielding percentage at shortstop came was .969 3 years ago. He managed a .953 in 81 games at short this season. IMO, Renteria provides a better bat and a more reliable glove at short. Add to that, if Jake Westbrook is really off the market, Tim Hudson would be an excellent addition to the rotation. I think if a deal could be struck for both, the Cubs would become a much stronger team. My feeling is that the Cubs need a good #2 hitting shortstop and a solid starting pitcher. In this deal, they could land both.
  15. 1) In-house. Izturis or Cedeno. IMO a very BAD idea. 2) Julio Lugo. Suspect defense at SS, questionable bat vs. NL pitching and will likely cost about $9M per season. IMO mediocre at best. Neither option is very good and it appears a trade to fill this position would be the best decision. Why not talk to Atlanta about Renteria? He is owed appx $18M over the next 2 seasons and Boston was completely responsible for his 2006 salary. I think Atlanta may be willing to listen, especially if Huson could be moved in the same deal. I recently read that Baltimore was interested in aquiring Hudson and was will to include Hayden Penn in the deal. Either Mazzone thinks Penn isn't as good as his billing or he thinks Hudson will be better than his recent numbers would indicate. IMO the Cubs could easily match or exceed this offer and including Renteria would save Atlanta $51M over the next 3 seasons. Soriano Renteria Lee Ramirez Jones Murton Barrett PIE
  16. I believe your right, DeRosa cannot be traded until June 1. Even so, it seems he has been a utility player his whole career. He's a fantastic insurance policy given our recent injury history.
  17. Sign Julio Lugo for SS. Bat him 2nd. Sign Jason Schmidt. Great #2 behind Zambrano. Trade for Jake Westbrook. Izturis, Ohman and Novoa maybe? Trade for Austin Kearns. I don't know what it would take, but Kearns would be a GREAT platoon partner for Jones in RIGHT FIELD. Try to land a LH bat for the bench. Dave Delluci, via FA or perhaps Ryan Church could be coaxed in the same deal as Kearns. All this talk about Soriano in the outfield seems dumb to me. The guy is a 2B and a leadoff hitter. Use him accordingly. IMO, Pie should be in center. He will provide more than adaquate defense and may suprise us with the bat. Definately enough for the 7th or 8th spot in the order. Matt Murton is our left fielder. Soriano 2B Lugo SS Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Jones RF Murton LF Barrett C Pie CF Kearns DeRosa Blanco Moore Delucci/Church Zambrano Schmidt Hill Westbrook Prior/Miller Demptster Howry Eyre Wood Cotts Wuertz For about $124.5M we might just break the curse.
  18. Aramis Ramirez, IMO, will sign w/the Cubs. ARod would be nice if we could get him for, as suggested in another thread, Gallagher, Pie, Guzman (to Marlins) and Demptster and Dontrelle Willis (from Marlins) to the Yankees. That deal would be great, but is unlikely. Tejada would be nice for a similar, probably lower, pricetag. Although I like both of them, Prior and Murton (either/or, not both in the same deal) would be replaceable via FA (Soriano, Lee for LF/Saito or another #5). IF we could find a way to get ARod/Tejada at SS, Young would look even better at 2B.
  19. Murton (or Prior) and Izturis plus a mid-level pitching prospect would be possible depending on what other moves Hendry makes.
  20. I'm thinking 2 seperate deals: Maddux, Walker, both pitching prospects gained in Williamson deal and Neifi (if they want him) for Izturis and Andre Ethier. A combination of Hill, Cedeno, Ryu, Theriot, Novoa and Pie for Tejada.
  21. 1) Do the home teams' broadcasters call the game or does XM have their own people? 2) Are ALL games brodcast on XM or do blackout restrictions apply?
  22. Originally, I liked the idea of letting Furcal re-sign with Atlanta and targeting Marcus Giles in trade. Doing this would go a long way toward bringing Brian on board. Problem is, we still don't have a "Dusty Proof" leadoff hitter. The cubs could go get Juan Pierre, but that idea has not met with much approval. There has also been mention of bringing in Kenny Lofton for a season. IMO, Lofton is an older, slower version of Juan Pierre. As for shortstop, the Cubs could re-sign Nomar. This would be a formidable lineup but it would financially limit what could be done to improve the bench. rotation and bullpen. CF Pierre $5.0M 2B M Giles $3.5M RF B Giles $9.0M 1B D Lee $8.0M 3B A Ramirez $10.5M SS N Garciaparra $6.0M CF M Bradley $3.8M LF M Murton $0.3M C M Barrett $4.0M -------- $50.1M
  23. Aquiring Bradley will make Baker earn his money. It would be about time. Bradley is an enormous talent who can't seem to keep his emotions in check. Remind anyone of a certain Cubs starting pitcher? Bradley can also be used in both other outfield spots with above average defense at either. If the Dodgers are intent on unloading Bradley, the Cubs should be first in line. As far as Giles vs. Kearns, thats a no-brainer but we have to think realistically. The Cubs are not likely to land Giles AND Furcal. So you get what you can and hope everyone stays healthy. Saving money by not signing Giles could also allow more financial flexibility to upgrade the bench and the pitching staff.
