  1. I wonder if there's ever been an analysis (doubtful, given the Cubs prior management) regarding Soriano's bat speed. Given how heavy his bat is, it wouldn't surprise me if it's declined over the past few years. This obviously wouldn't solve everything, but maybe switching to a lighter bat would boost his numbers a bit and make him at least serviceable for another year, particularly given the fact that he can only hit fastballs.
  2. I keep on wondering why numerous places have suggested Trey Martin is a good sleeper. If he's a slashing type of minimal power guy, he's really going to need an elite hit tool. AzPhil's wording, and I may be reading too much into it, seems to suggest that Martin is going to need to rework his swing to develop some power. Physically, he would seem to have the potential to add it, but we'll have to wait and see. I'm a bit bothered that AzPhil seems to think that we aren't working on Maples mechanics. Granted, it seems like speculation on his part, and it is also possible that they might simply want him to get his feet wet in pro ball before pondering changes. That said, they did aggressively push someone with similar mechanical concerns in Struck. Didn't Epstein say something about how the Red Sox have been focusing on pitcher health? If that's the case, I'd have to think Maples would be the first candidate to have his mechanics changed if they're as bad as everyone says they are.
  3. He's probably scrambling to hire a staff, considering how small the Cubs' front office is and the likelihood that nobody of significance from Boston will be allowed to come with him.
  4. Kaplan Looks like it's players then. This could end badly. After reading that SI article, it sounds like the Red Sox know more about our prospects then we do.
  5. Off the top of my head I'd say they were above average at 3B, SS, C, and 2-3 SP spots (Garza for sure and maybe Dempster and Z). Add Wilson and Pujols/Fielder to that (if you can obviously) and hopefully a 3B platoon can stay above average (shouldn't be hard given what we have in-house) and this team can be above average at most of its positions. Then add in that the Cards and Brewers will fall off significantly without Pujols and Fielder and things get even better looking. What about the fact that the Brewers will have Greinke for a full year (and not as unlucky) and the Cardinals will have Wainwright back? Not to mention the Reds. And calling Z "above average" is generous given his performance and the fact that he'll likely never pitch for the Cubs again. The Cubs may have a chance to be competitive next year, but a lot of things need to go right.
  6. OK, awful is exaggerating it, but we have substantial money tied up in mediocre to OK players and have a good amount of guys who are overpaid and don't have bright prospects of getting better. but there are zero big contracts that extend past next year. we have bad contracts, but they're all coming off the books. The Marmol contract isn't looking great
  7. Never forget: http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/chicago-cubs_112114177768677294.html
  8. I have to think Henry would lose a lot of integrity in baseball circles by asking for something like that.
  9. That would be make sense, considering what the Sox got for Guillen. I'm kind of expecting that we've seen the last of Josh Vitters in this deal. Honestly, I don't want him if it takes that much. Is this serious?
  10. There is all kinds of stupid at work here. First off, the Cubs scored the 8th most runs in the NL this year and had the 8th highest OPS. They are average. You can compete with that (Philly and Atlanta did). Add a superstar to that lineup while replacing a mediocre guy and you are going to have a respectable offense. The Cubs have sucked for two straight years, why would you want to go through that again? One higher draft pick is not worth sucking when those draft picks are such longshots to contribute anyway. Its hard to see how Pujols or Fielder could turn the mess we had on the field this year into a playoff team. Maybe your right. Id also add, its not just the offense thats weak. The starting rotation needs 2 or 3 more arms as well. Just one, really... Garza, Dempster, Wells, New Guy, Cashner/someone else We lost 91 games last year. Adding Fielder and 1 pitcher is not going to result in a 18-20 game swing, particularly when you account for the fact that Ramirez is likely gone, Soriano will continue to decline, etc.
  11. Not that surprising, but how can he possibly know that for sure when we don't have a GM?
  12. A mid-level prospect? They'd want Brett Jackson for Anibal Sanchez.
  13. Not surprisingly this chat was useless. Has anyone outside of Levine ever mentioned/confirmed that Friedman has an ownership interest in the Rays?
  14. Matt Forte? Is Forte a restricted or unrestricted free agent this offseason?
  15. Dominguez is one of the most overrated prospects in baseball, IMO.
  16. Exactly. That's why I'd rather go after them. As good as Garza was when Tampa traded him, Shields is much, much better. I can't even think of a package we could offer (without Castro) that the Yankees couldn't beat. I wonder if Castillo could get us one of them.
  17. I don't think we have enough for Shields, but I wouldn't mind going after Cobb or Torres.
  18. Ricketts has already said that will happen, regardless of title.
  19. Are you just getting that from the movie? His daughter is in college or graduated by now, so if she really was what kept him from Boston, I doubt it would now unless he has other kids there as well. I think he has 4 year old twins too. Someone linked a Peter Gammons article a few pages back, and he doesn't seem like a guy willing to take on a new challenge. He seems pretty content in Oakland. Epstein is plenty content in Boston with a young family to take care of...yet here we are on day whatever of "Epsteins going to be offered the job." Beane is still very much a candidate IMO and one that for whatever reason is being slept on. He needs more headlines somehow. Well, nobody really knows how Epstein feels about his family or his situation in Boston, particularly a random poster on a message board. Different people are motivated by different things. But here's what Beane said: Beane is being slept on and not getting headlines probably because he doesn't want the job, period.

  21. Tampa's business model is what it is at this point. I think the only thing that would change his mind was if he knows something definitive about the fate of a new stadium. Otherwise, the Rays will always have a small payroll and rely on revenue sharing to break even.
  22. I'd give up Byrd or Marmol, although this whole compensation thing is pretty stupid. If Epstein can't find cheap replacements for those guys' production, I wouldn't want him to be GM anyways.
  23. Friedman with triple the budget is basically Friedman with more room for error. I'm hoping the Rays ownership does something silly that makes him want to leave. It also means greater expectations. That impacts a general manager in a lot of ways: less chance of letting productive players go to get draft picks to build up a roster, less chance to play the kids and hope it works out. I agree with UMFan that a successful small market GM isn't always the greatest fit for a large market club. While managing a large market club is easier than a small market, they do take different skill sets. There is some overlap, but it requires a very different way of thinking when managing a large market club. You can't just take small market principles and apply some extra money and free agent signings on top. I think the same principles can work, it's just that these philosophies often require some patience that big market owners don't have. GM's often come into a big market with the expectation that they'll be contending for a World Series next year. If Ricketts is honest when he talks about the organization, it seems like he would have more patience than the usual big market owner to make sure the organization is built "the right way," which may make the job even more attractive for candidates.
  24. Good thing we brought back Fleita!
  25. Howard Johnson. He was so good in RBI baseball.
