I blame Saturday Night Fever and the Bee Gees in general for your viewpoint. this. dance music, especially disco, was "music for [expletive]" in the eyes of the public at that time and all the way up until the late 2000s/early 2010s. there's a deeper conversation about EDM/dubstep (or, at the very least, what america terms "dubstep") masculinizing dance music for heterosexual white dudes that i can get into. also, if you want a REALLY good book about the history of dance music/dj culture, you can't go wrong with last night a dj saved my life: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Night-DJ-Saved-Life/dp/0802146104 deep insight about the history of alan freed, soul music, northern soul, hip-hop, disco, house music, techno, jungle/drum and bass: everything is connected.

    Reading that article is the first time I've ever seen the viewpoint that hating on disco was considered an afront against African Americans, Hispanics, and Homosexuals. The only people I ever associated with disco was milquetoast white people in leisure suits. I realize a lot of disco-era songs became anthemic for a lot of cultures, but I never thought hating disco was because of that, I just assumed people hated it because it was nails on a chalkboard to them.
