  1. this sounds like a suicide note I thought the same thing until I read the "future" part!
  2. During the regular season, the Cubs have won 3 (or more) in a row 11 times. Only twice has that happened against good teams, both times in June. We have not swept a good team all year - the Rockies were only OK at the time. The 11% odds that BP is now sporting for the Cubs chances seem about right. Regular season, 3 wins or more in a row: Wed, 4/25 Brewers W 9-3 Fri, 4/27 at Cardinals W 5-3 Sat, 4/28 at Cardinals W 8-1 Tue, 5/1 at Pirates W 8-6 Wed, 5/2 at Pirates W 8-6 Wed, 5/2 at Pirates W 7-1 Fri, 5/4 Nationals W 6-4 Sat, 5/5 Nationals W 5-3 Sun, 5/6 Nationals W 4-3 Wed, 6/6 at Brewers W 6-2 Thu, 6/7 at Braves W 2-1 Fri, 6/8 at Braves W 9-1 Wed, 6/13 Mariners W 3-2 Thu, 6/14 Mariners W 5-4 Fri, 6/15 Padres W 4-1 Fri, 6/22 at White Sox W 5-1 Sat, 6/23 at White Sox W 2-1 Sun, 6/24 at White Sox W 3-0 Mon, 6/25 Rockies W 10-9 Tue, 6/26 Rockies W 8-5 Wed, 6/27 Rockies W 6-4 Fri, 6/29 Brewers W 6-5 Sun, 7/1 Brewers W 5-1 Mon, 7/2 at Nationals W 7-2 Tue, 7/3 at Nationals W 3-1 Fri, 7/13 Astros W 6-0 Sat, 7/14 Astros W 9-3 Sun, 7/15 Astros W 7-6 Mon, 7/16 Giants W 3-2 Wed, 7/18 Giants W 12-1 Thu, 7/19 Giants W 9-8 Fri, 7/20 Diamondbacks W 6-2 Thu, 8/16 Reds W 12-4 Fri, 8/17 Cardinals W 2-1 Sat, 8/18 Cardinals W 5-3 Wed, 9/12 at Astros W 3-2 Thu, 9/13 at Astros W 6-2 Fri, 9/14 at Cardinals W 5-3 Sat, 9/15 at Cardinals W 3-2 Wed, 9/19 Reds W 3-2 Fri, 9/21 Pirates W 13-8 Sat, 9/22 Pirates W 9-5 Sun, 9/23 Pirates W 8-0
  3. The prospect of an all expansion team NLCS while the Cubs sit and wait for year 100 is sickening.
  4. Link. "Although the best wager would be Cubs in four, I am going to go out on a little bit of a limb and predict a Cubs sweep."
  5. Well, another meaningless September Cubs game.
  6. where is the mets at? Mets fall would be 2nd. Link
  7. Well, if the Cubs collapse it will be the 12th worst collapse in the history of baseball (accoring to the guys at BP). We may be witnessing history.
  8. Whichevere scouts gave the thumbs up to trade for Trashel need to be fired, NOW!
  9. Don't worry, we still get to face Peavy and Young who have to be high up on that list too! Peavy is #1, Young is #18 in MLB VORP. Here's hoping they actually pitch them in the final series...
  10. The Brewers are about to beat both Hudson and Smoltz - the 6th and 9th best pitchers in MLB by VORP.
  11. Still seems off because of the running out of another game, but, the Cubs beat a bottom feeder team, as they should have and the Brewers beat a better team that they were predicted to lose against.
  12. erm... influenza is endemic in this country. You can get it at any time of year. It doesn't migrate from canada for the winter. Influenza is a seasonal epidemic, occurring in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter months. It does not hide in Canada, but rather moves from Northern to Southern hemispheres. Influenza infection does not generally occur outside of seasonal outbreaks. The changes in the virus yearly necessitate the yearly changes in the influenza vaccine - and the necessary receipt of the vaccine yearly. The strains for this Northern Hemisphere season are based on what it being seen elsewhere in the world. Influenza epidemics occur in November - February.
  13. For the record (if there was one), Dempster did not have "the flu" - influenza. Influenza hasn't made it to the US yet. So while he could certainly spread some other (stomach?) virus, we're unlikely to see a long term loss of bullpen mates from a debilitating influenza virus.
  14. Un-be-lieveable... what CAN pie do????????
  15. Who's even available in the bullpen?
  16. This move is likely to go down as the "genius" or "folly" of Lou Piniella's short tenure with the Cubs. I think it's a poor idea - look at Jake Peavy used on short rest to face Arizona. Playing starting pitching matchups seems to backfire more than it helps. Kind of like a double header where the "surrender" lineup often scores more runs.
  17. I'm guessing there are more Cubs fans watching this game than Pirates fans.
  18. Am I actually rooting for Shawn Chacon? This season has turned things upside down.
  19. And the Brewers win against Harang and Gorzelanny by hanging in and beating the opposing bullpen in contests where they face very good pitchers on bad teams ... ... and the Cubs routinely don't.
  20. Catch the ball!!!!
  21. If we were the Cards, our washed up pitcher would turn into Babe Ruth... but, alas.
  22. I was wondering about that, too. I thought maybe it was just a Firefox issue. Seems an odd omission.
  23. With the 2 luckiest teams in the NL playing, I half expect to see horseshoes fly out of someone's broken bat.
  24. Runner on 3rd, 2 outs... pitch to Pujols or go after Edmonds. Seems like a no brainer (even though Edmunds had a HR previously). Pujols singles. 2-1 Cards.
