  1. Josh H. had a pretty good night last night - Hamilton hammers win home for Texas Rangers

Even before he drove the first pitch he saw from Mariners reliever J.J. Putz into the right field seats with one out and Ian Kinsler on first in the ninth inning, he first kept the Rangers in the game with two running catches and then helped give the club the lead by beating out a rally-starting infield hit.

I'm just hoping he stays healthy. I got great value on him in my fantasy draft (18th Round). Apparently no one else in my league got the memo that he is good at baseball.

Why the heck did you pass on him in the 17th round?

Because there is only 2 other teams in the league? :)

  2. i'm still not sure why Meph is taking this so personally. if you think it's a bunk rumor, who cares? move on

Because HE personally called ME out on it. My only response to the validity of the rumor was:

this is completely fabricated, but w/e

its something i like well enough to overlook that part of it

So you don't think that saying "this is completely fabricated..." called his credibility into question? Or more importantly, that he would interpret it in that manner?

I guess Meph should have said "In my opinion, this is completely fabricated" with the proper qualifiers and disclaimers no one would have taken offence

  3. I appreciate the mention, but you might want to credit RammyFanny (I think) with bringing the OH stuff over here.

I do think it's cool of him to pass the stuff on to us, even if half the responses will be some sort of flames.

Sorry, it is easy to get lost in a thread of this size. I agree that it was cool for him to pass on the info since it was Cub related and I probably never would have found it on my own.

  4. credibility does not last forever. Those who choose to claim things are done and things are over, over and over again, put their credibility on the line, and deserve scorn when they've cried wolf for the 1000th time.

All they can do is pass on the info they where given. Things have moved much slower than I think anyone expected and as far as we know the deal got axed at the last minute by Angelos. They could have said "Take it with a grain of salt but FWIW, my source says it is as good as done" but I get tired of all the qualifiers and posturing that has to be done to give your self and out if things fall apart. I'm glad people that are in a position to share information do. Things might not have worked out as they were told this time, but people seem to be questioning if they have any sources at all and are just making everything up. I don't think it is fair or justified.

  5. Honestly, I wish we had never heard of OH or bigbird or Peace or whoever else supposedly has insider status at OH.

After this whole Roberts/Bedard fiasco, I long for the days of reading about trades AFTER they happen.

Granted, a lot of this is on MacPhail and Angelos, but I honestly don't care about OH, the people who go to OH, the posts that are brought back here from OH or anything else Orioles related.

THIS IS NSBB, not OH Jr.

I have never visited OH, but I can only guess NSBB is a far more superior site, even if we don't have anyone who sweeps the floors of Hendry's secret war room.

It was fun for awhile (like a day or two), but it's real old at this point.

I'm sorry, but the bolded part is comical. "I have never been to France, but I can only guess that the wine here is far more superior" I'm not saying that NSBB is not a superior site but it is hard to make such a statement if you have never been there and goes to show that some people have a strong bias against the OH in general.

While it is true that I have never been there, I have been given a wine tasting of OH (with the quotes that have been copied to this site) and I'm not impressed.

Strong bias against the OH in general? Please. I'm a Cub fan hanging out at what I consider to be the best Cubs forum on the planet and I'm jealous of an Orioles message board that I've never even visited?

Nice try, but you're way off base.

I don't see any were that I said you were jealous of the Oriole message board, just that you seemed to be biased against it and I have no idea why. Maybe I should not have said strong bias against, but I don't see how your statement about a place you have never been could mean anything else.

David is a trusted poster here and mentioned that a few insiders from the OH have had inside info in the past. By slamming the insiders on the OH and questioning that they have ever had any inside info, indirectly calls David into question since he said they are reliable. I can see why he cares and understand why he feels the need to defend them.

  7. I may be way off, and I'm not sure how to look it up, but I thought the Yankees had a all lefty rotation after the Cubs traded them Steve Trout many many years ago.

I tried to look it up and the Cubs traded Trout to the Yankees in 87. I think that made the rotation Tommy John, Dennis Rasmussen, Ron Guidry, and Trout for a while at least. Rick Rhoden was on the staff but I think he got injured which lead to the trade for Trout in the first place. Could be wrong though

  8. wrigley boy? let's save the sophomoric nonsense. I never heard stone say that & I highly doubt he did. there was a time a couple yrs ago that aramis was constantly hurt, would go in prolonged slumps & wailed away at the plate. He showed a complete lack of character when dlee went down by tucking his tail & seemed to have given up. Many thought the cubs were looking to move his salary at the time. With a healthy lee, he came back to form last year. Speaking of a lineup full of free swingers, for those johnny peralta lovers out there...he brings no speed to the lineup & whiffed a whopping 146 times last year. He is hardly what this lineup needs.

-I actually remember Stoney saying this too. It definitely was said.

-Aramis has never ever shown a "complete lack of character." The year D-Lee went down, he had one of his best years.

-He didn't come back to form last year. He wasn't as good as he was the year before.

-The fact that Johnny Peralta strikes out a lot is completely irrelevant to any discussion on how much he'd help the offense become more patient.

I think the only guys in the lineup that could really be classified as free swingers are Soriano and Pie. I expect you think D-Lee is a free swinger since he strikes out a lot, though.

For what it is worth, I remember reading that Stone suggested ARam for Izturis+prospect also. I also remeber hearing and reading that Stone say that the Cubs would be set for 10 years with a Izturis and Cedeno MI. I like Stone but do not think he would make a good GM.

  9. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071209&content_id=2321912&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc

I understand the need for a left-handed-hitting right fielder, but the Cubs already have someone in house to fill this spot, Pagan. From what I've seen, he is very solid defensively and has the speed to help Felix Pie in the outfield. Also, he could be a quality offensive player, because he's a switch-hitter -- if given the opportunity to play every day. Why isn't this option being explored?

-- Joe B., Coal City, Ill.

Pagan has not been able to play more than 77 games in the last two seasons because of injuries. He has to show he can stay healthy.

So, Pie needs help in the OF?

  10. Rich Hill is a much more valuable property than Carl Crawford.

Under no circumstances should Rich Hill be traded for Carl Crawford.

    OK then.

    Who plays center?

    Pie would be my preference.

I think he was saying "If Pie was traded for Garza would you then trade Hill for Crawford" So, Pie would not be an option since he would be playing for the twins.

  11. My only point is that you can't successfully argue Soto would have yielded more wins, and it's best to take you're latest, altered stance, which is to suggest we'll never know.

The problem is, if you take this kind of argument to its logical extreme, you can pretty much make the following arguments:

    1) You can't argue that A-Rod playing SS on this team would give this team any more wins than it has.

    2) You can't argue that Neifi playing SS on this team would give this team any more losses than it has.

In terms of probability, no, we can't say with absolute 100% certainty that Soto would have been given this team more wins than Hill/Bowen/Kendall/Blanco. There's always a possibility that Soto would perform as well as or worse than that quartet.

However, given Soto's production in the majors and AAA, I think there's an incredibly good chance the Cubs' offensive production would have increased with Soto behind the dish as opposed to the four catchers mentioned above. With better offensive production, this team would have more wins.

If the Yankess went 162-0 with Neifi at SS it would be pretty hard to say that A-Rod would have given them more wins. I think that is what TheDude is saying. If after the Barrett trade the Cubs went on a long win streak winning most of thier games, it would be hard to say that Soto would have yielded more wins since they already were winning most of the games at that point of time. I don't know if any of that is true since I didn't look it up, but that seems to be the point that is trying to be made.

  12. MSNBC.com

A new study by a professor at the University of Texas at Austin suggests that home plate umpires call balls and strikes more favorably when the pitcher is their same race, Time magazine reported.

The research team led Daniel Hamermesh, professor of economics, found that umpires call strikes more for pitchers of their race and balls more when the pitcher is of another race, Time said.

The study found that the disparity occurred in 1 percent of pitches.

am I undersyanding that right? it sounds like it isn't a big deal, like it could even be random.

even if true, it would pretty much fall in line with similar studies.

I would find it hard to believe that the error in such a study would be less than 2 or 3% let alone less than 1%

  13. I would agree with you except for the fact that he isn't on the 40-man roster. I'm not sure who they could move to make room for him.

60 day DL for Guzman would make the most sense to make room for EPatt.

I'm hoping and thinking it will be Pie that will be called up.

I think Guzman was added to the 60 day DL when Wood was activated. Blanco could be moved to the 60 day DL though I think.

  14. I love all the posts saying the cubs are 6-7 in their last 13 games. That is such an ESPNish stat. Let me guess, they are 7-7 in their last 14? Maybe 8-7 in their last 15?

Why? I think people, including myself are pointing out that we are no longer hot and playing above .500 baseball.

during a completely arbitrary period selected solely to support your own opinion. give it a rest.

Give what a rest? Defending my point?

It's not like I'm selecting random dates. I'm selecting the last 13 games that the Cubs have played, a stretch that constitutes 8% of the season in order to say that the Cubs have not been hot over the past 13 games.

But you're right, the next time I have an opinion, it will be better for me to select stats that completely refute my opinion. Thanks for the advice.

Maybe it is just me, but selecting the last 13 games seems pretty random to me. Why not 15 or 20 or 10?

  15. Saw this on Foxsports rumor page.

The Braves are believed to be offering the Rangers a multi-player package that includes Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who likely would catch for Texas, though he also can play first base. The Rangers also could send a reliever to the Braves along with Teixeira, possibly left-hander Ron Mahay.

They said the Dodgers were another team looking at Teixeira.

    Here is the link http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7056962?MSNHPHMA[/i]

  16. I strongly predict his return would probably be my most emotional moment as a Cubs fan.

Seriously, I hope the Wrigley fans give him a 10 minute standing ovation the first day he takes the mound.

Sadly, it will probably be the opposite.

I doubt it. Kerry Wood is probably the most universally loved player the Cubs have had since Sandberg

this is the over-statement, I believe most people pray he does well but expects his failure with him returning to the DL. I have never been a fan of his ever since he held out after he was drafted.

I would say D. Lee is far more loved followed by Maddox

I highly doubt Tommy Maddox is more loved than Kerry Wood

I thought he meant Garry Maddox, Secretary of Defense and Awesome Facial Hair: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1332/2100/320/gmaddox86T.jpg

But as far as beloved Cubs, there was that guy who wore #31 after Fergie and then was traded to Atl ...

I'm not sure what Maddox was traded to Atl, the only one I can think of left as a FA to join Atl and that would be Greg Maddox.

  17. I don't understand why everyone is giving reds44 such a hard time. It's not like he started the rumor. It was on the Redszone board well before it made our forum. reds44 has shown (with the Jones to Marlins almost-trade) that he does have some sort of inside information. Cut him some slack.

which, of course, was completed as described shortly thereafter.

Who is giving him a hard time?

He has gotten both rumors "semi-right"

Sure seems like sethuel1 has been giving him a hard time and for what appears to be no reason.

  18. Anybody know where Matt Lawton, Jody Gerut, or Fred Mcgriff are these days?

No, but I'm pretty sure I know where Aramis Ramirez, Kenny Lofton, and Nomar Garciapara are.

And lest we forget a certain first baseman?

You must be talking about Randall Simon, because Derek Lee wasn't a deadline deal.

Neither was Gerut right? Dubois was traded for Gerut who was in turn traded for Lawton if I remember right. I'm not sure about all of it but I do not think Gerut came at the deadline at least

  19. I didn't really think it was a question of if Jones can get back to his career avg as much as a question if Jones could out preform Pie for the rest of the year. I think it would be a gamble to expect Jones to get back to his career avg, but not as much of a gamble to expect him to out produce Pie for the rest of the year. Jones could repeat his first half and have numbers similar to what Pie might put up.

For each example of a 30+ player that fell off a cliff never to be heard from again I can give you an example of a prospect similar to Pie that dosen't make it. I would be just as happy if they gave the job to Pie due to him having some upside but I wouldn't call it a big gamble to go with Jones.
