  1. I don't think there is any way Floyd is back next year. Monroe would be fine if he is just RH role player / pinch hitter off the bench They need to make a big splash at SS to upgrade the production there. That allows them to put Pie in CF and bat eighth and not worry so much about his offense. Hendry has come this far with Jones so I think he lets him play out the contract. Jones/Murton platoon in RF is not so bad. Marshall, Dempster, Cedeno seem to be trade bait. Prior can compete with Hart, Gallagher, etc for the 5th spot. Dempster is very replaceable with Wuertz, Wood, Howry and Marmol still here. Cedeno is not as good an option for utility man as Theriot and he is not going to get a shot as starting SS again if the Cubs do make that their priority position to upgrade this winter.
  2. There is no way Soriano should be batting 1st anymore. He's not a leadoff hitter. I don't care how big his head is or how big his contract is. No more leadoff for Fonzie. Also, I don't want to see Jones on this team anymore. Get an impact RF. Trade Pie if that's what it takes. Get a new SS for sure. Theriot is terrible. If the Cubs get Renteria there is no way they are also getting an "impact" RF. Jones/Murton would be fine if they get production from C and SS. Hopefully Soto will show enough to earn the 5th spot in the order and then you can move Jones/Murton down to 7th. But overall, I would take my chances with the above (and have Gallager, Hart, etc waiting in the wings in case the inevitable happens with Prior).
  3. 2003? ARam had no problem with pressure in 2003. Everyone knows the playoffs is a crap shoot because of the small sample size. Have a 3 day slump like you probably had at least 10 times during the regular season and you are done. Bottom line is that the D-Backs were better, get over it and see how you can improve for next year. Soto at catcher, Pie in center, Jones / Murton platoon in LF and see who you can acquire to get more production at SS while letting Theriot become a super sub. We know they can win 85 games, some slight improvement gets them to 90 and probably puts them in the playoffs again next year.
  4. It's almost getting as bad as the damn John Mellancamp/John Cougar/John Cougar Mellancamp commercials. This is much, much worse than the JCM ad IMO. The Lofton commercial has been played a ridiculously high number of times as well.
  5. I hope Hendry brings him back for another incentive-laden deal and he stays healthy all year in the back of the pen. Trade Dempster and I'd enjoy seeing Howry-Marmol-Wood in the back end of the pen. that is the best scenario. i guess its time to start talking about next year. I'm such a minor league fanatic that I'm always looking at the future. i think i'll try that tactic next year. at least there is always hope if you choose that avenue. ps- for all the d lee hating going on for this series. if anyone is guilty of choking, it's aramis as much as lee. Aramis had a few hard swings yesterday, the first one to get a hit is the least choking of those two. :P Lee is 2-7 with a walk. I don't really see how that is choking, but whatever.
  6. I don't have the overall stats, but I know one team who in 1984 came back to win a five game series after being down 0-2. I also remember a team that was left for dead in '03 that needed to win three games in a row and they did it. Maybe the getting ahead in series thing has not worked out so well for the Cubs so they are going to try doing it the other way. What's the point in not pulling for them until they are eliminated? Everyone thought the two games in Chicago were favorable match ups. They turn it around at home and win those two and then it is 1 game back in AZ that can go either way. If they wind up losing in Chicago, at least you can say you supported your team to the end. Seems a lot better than bailing when they were down two games.
  7. Yes No, they really don't. They go home and enjoy their luxurious lifestlyes. We the fans suffer because.... because... because... I don't know why... I guess if that makes you feel better about them losing a game that you really wanted them to win then go ahead and think that. By the way, the Phillies also really as a ground don't care at all but the Rockies and D-Backs really do. That's why they are winning.
  8. Yes, apparently. Not like he ever played in any pressure filled games down the stretch this season. Or, for example, when he was on the team that won the World Series in '03.
  9. Maybe bandwagon jumpers that change their avatars to other teams when things are going bad have a part of them that is truly enjoying this also.
  10. I think we might be the only team in the playoffs he starts for. At least in the NL. I am sure AZ would take him in a heart beat. The other two starting 1B are Todd Helton and Ryan Howard so I am not sure what your point is. This is why the playoffs are a crapshoot. Two bad games can make any team or player look bad. Think the 101 win Braves were thrilled to lose to the Cubs in '03? I think Conor Jackson is better than Derrek Lee. Hell he almost had as many homers and rbis playing in a platoon. Ha, ha - that is funny.
  11. Juan & Augie. Not to mention Joe Bo tearing it up for the Tribe. We are definitely cursed. Yeah, Jo Bo is tearing it up. Have you actually looked at this stats?

  13. so 4 CT wed 6 CT thurs not official like he said, though son of a. Screw that. What evil lurks in the hearts of MLB playoff schedule makers? The Shadow knows! My unofficial insider information (none really, just my best guess based on previous years) tells me that it will be the two late games.
  14. If we're up 2-1 by then, put in Marquis, but on a short leash. If not, go with Z. As long as when the 9th inning roles around, and we're up, we dont see you know who, no matter how big the lead. Piniella has to make the decision about whether he feels comfortable with going to Z on 3 days rest or not and then plan accordingly no matter how the first three games come out. To be up 2-1 then give away a chance to put away another team on your home field so you can save a guy for the next series is a big mistake. The only reason to not put Z out there is either because he does not think he will be as effective on the short rest or because he thinks he has a better chance to win on the road. As for Dempster, there is no way Piniella is not going to him in save situations. He has used him there all year with a good % of success and he is not going to suddenly switch around the bullpen roles now that the team is in the playoffs.
  15. this team is far superior to 98. that teams pitching was total crap, and it's offense one guy. they are also facing a much lesser opponent, than that 1998 team. I think this team is about as good as the 1989 team, but again, they will be facing a lesser team. the 'lesser' is not meant to detract from the DBacks. that 98 Braves team was incredible, and the 89 Giants were very very good. In case anyone has forgotten how bad that rotation was in '98, let me remind you that Mark Clark started game 1 of the NLDS. Their only halfway decent pitcher, Kevin Tapani, almost stole game 2 and then they brought back Kerry Wood with his elbow held together most likely with duct tape because even by game 3 they had no one else halfway decent to throw out there.
  16. I hope they pencil him in his as trade bait to improve the offense. Three lefties in the rotation are too many and I think Marshall will always be a back of the rotation type of guy. Why is three lefties in the rotation too many? Who would they replace Marshall with? Prior will be trying to make another comeback, but they still need a decent fallback option if he gets injured again, which isn't that unlikely. I don't hate him, but as a young player with some success at the major league level he has trade value to improve the offense. Hart, Gallager, Prior, etc can compete for the 5th starter spot if necessary.
  17. Is this going to be like a spring training game where Lou gets the starters out after one time through the order?
  18. It is called MLB.tv and/or Extra Innings. If anything this good for them because it is more reason for them to sell you on buying one of those since you need them to see these key games.
  19. That would have to be the case, because until the field is set it won't even be known that the Cubs play Arizona in the first place. If the East runner-up wins the wild card then the Cubs would play the East champion. Theoretically if SD, Mets and Phillies all lose and the Rockies win then the Mets and Phillies would have a 1 game playoff for the East title and the Rockies and Padres for the wild card. In that case the Cubs would be locked in to the AZ matchup no matter what the outcome of the one game playoffs.
  20. If SD wins today then nothing else matters for the Cubs. Even if the Mets and Phillies have to play a one game playoff it has no impact on the Cubs schedule. The only way it would is if the loser of that playoff is still in contention for the wild card and a SD win eliminates that possibility.
  21. I hope they pencil him in his as trade bait to improve the offense. Three lefties in the rotation are too many and I think Marshall will always be a back of the rotation type of guy.
  22. Why wouldn't they? It makes not sense to bring Peavy on 3 days rest to clinch the playoff spot when they can put Tomco out there and hope for help so they can use him for Game 1 of the NLDS. Worst case they get to use Peavy on full rest for a tie breaker. By the way, this quote makes me want to have the Cubs play AZ in the first round: He is resting Augie for the playoffs? Bring him on!!
  23. I think Bud Black already said he would not use Peavy if they had already clinched at least a tie. I think they have done that so I would say it will be Tomco tomorrow.
