You really, really should. Middle relief for our floundering major league club is not worth jeopardizing the future and length of control of possibly our best pitching prospect. I used to think that way, but I'm starting to change my mind about the length of control thing. with the way pitchers flame out you're generally going to get the best years out of pitcher within the first six years of service. as for pitchers that start to come into their own in years 5-6, 29 other teams are producing them. pitchers that are consistently dominant from the get go up until 5-6 years of service without signs of inconsistency or regression (1 in a million), throw money at them. Again though, it's not as if Gallagher is not in the big league rotation because of a lack of spots. He needs more developmental time. many many pitchers earn some stripes in the pen for a couple years then break into the rotation. many more learn they can't get big league hitters out yet and are sent back to the minors for more seasoning. I forget the rules about service time and whatnot, but if properly timed, bringing up a minor leaguer will actually let you get 6.5 years out of the player. it's not like the clock starts running once the roster move is made and in three years from that date he becomes arbi elig and 6 years from that date he becomes FA elig. it's all based on service time. now I would like to see them not get off the poddy. if he's up and in the pen, he's in the pen until next spring, at which time you know what he can do vs. major leaguers, and have every option available as to where to send him and in what role.
