I always thought of the 1914 Boston Braves as the greatest comeback team of all times. As of 15 June 1914, they were mired in dead last, 10.5 games out of first....... Team Name W L T PCT GB RS RA
New York Giants 27 18 0 .600 - 209 186
Cincinnati Reds 29 22 1 .569 1.0 215 169
Pittsburgh Pirates 24 23 2 .511 4.0 180 173
St. Louis Cardinals 27 26 2 .509 4.0 201 197
Chicago Cubs 26 26 2 .500 4.5 216 217
Philadelphia Phillies 22 23 0 .489 5.0 196 214
Brooklyn Robins 20 25 0 .444 7.0 169 193
Boston Braves 17 29 1 .370 10.5 149 186 Then, the miracle happend, and the Braves went 77-30 (.720) the rest of the season to finish 10.5 games out in front of the pack......... Team Name W L T PCT GB RS RA
Boston Braves 94 59 5 .614 - 657 548
New York Giants 84 70 2 .545 10.5 672 576
St. Louis Cardinals 81 72 4 .529 13.0 558 540
Chicago Cubs 78 76 2 .506 16.5 605 638
Brooklyn Robins 75 79 0 .487 19.5 622 618
Philadelphia Phillies 74 80 0 .481 20.5 651 687
Pittsburgh Pirates 69 85 4 .448 25.5 503 540
Cincinnati Reds 60 94 3 .390 34.5 530 651 Now, that .720 finish is not quite as good as the '06 CUBS, but the '06 CUBS weren't coming from dead last. Anyway, those '14 Braves went on to beat the Philadelphia A's in the world series for their only WS championship in Boston. (To date, the franchise has 3 WS championships, 1 in Boston (1914), 1 in Milwaukee (1957), and 1 in Atlanta (1995)). Not really on topic, but I just thought I'd share. Go CUBS !!
