The Cubs have been outbid for Cespedes, Yu Darvish, Anibal Sanchez, and Tanaka. After awhile it gets embarrassing that the Chicago Cubs continue to get out-bid for talent that is actually contributing on a Major League team.
if theo can't do anything without a top payroll he isn't special and we should've hired someone else who might have been. This isn't even an Oakland Athletics payroll right now. We'd be near the bottom of the league if we weren't still paying Alfonso Soriano money to not play here. Also he came into an organization that had no minor league system.
I think Theo and Jed have done a pretty good job with what they've had to work with. I'm convinced this is 100% on Ricketts end and I don't know if Theo realized what he was getting into when he signed up for this job.
Why? Because it's better to suck with players that MAY be here in a few years than suck with AAAA players like Ryan Sweeney who won't be here for sure.
I'm praying for San Jose assuming we make it past St Louis and Colorado. Still don't think we win a cup last year if we get Anaheim instead of Detroit.
It'll be interesting to see where they are around the trade deadline. I think they thought this would be a lost season (still could be as their pitching sucks). They're probably the best hitting team in baseball. They went out this offseason and made smart signings (Abreu) and good trades (Adam Eaton) and weren't content on sitting on their asses. And they're doing all this with nobody in their stands which means less money coming in. Ricketts on the other hand is sitting on his ass waiting for Wrigley Field renovation money to come in.
Meanwhile the White Sox, who lost more games than the Cubs last season, are probably going to at least contend for a playoff spot all season. Must be nice having a team that's not content with losing. Jose Abreu is a damn beast.
Rizzo is really the only young guy actually performing better than last season. Between that and all the horrendous bunting/bullpen management, Renteria sure looks a horrible hire.
