  1. As expensive as these guys are, they're by no means rent-a-players. They now have Kemp and A Gon at the heart of their lineup through pretty much eternity, as well as Han Ram for the next 2, and theres still hope for Crawford. Not sure what it does to their chances of extending Ethier though. I know that Epstein has changed many of our thinking, but there's something to be said about giving your team a good chance to be the NL's dominant force for the next several years no matter what impact it has on the future.
  2. I think that it was an opportunity for two teams to get what they want. Dodgers go from a one man offense to start to season to one of the most elite offenses in the game with a good rotation, most of which should stick around for the 3-5 years. The Red Sox get to dump a ton of salary, and give them a lot of flexibility to spend over the next few years, or else just go younger as The Cubs are doing.
  3. I'm trying to see what's going on in the world of SoSH, but it won't seem to load. My guess is some type of explosion.
  4. Because the Red Sox are unloading several expensive but very good players, and we have a 36 year old streaky OF with bad knees and an equally streaky $9.5 MM relief pitcher?
  5. Also consider that Shane Victorino and A.J. Ellis will be sprinkled into that lineup, with a rotation of Kershaw-Billingsly-Beckett-Dempster and the last I checked surprisingly good Capuano and Harang rounding I'm guessing that the Giants will need more than Alfonso Soriano and Sean Camp to answer that
  6. The fans might not love it, but if the Red Sox just let the Dodgers have Beckett, A Gon, and their contracts, that would be a [expletive] load of money off the books. Beckett's owed 15.75/year the next 2 years, and A Gon 21 MM/year through 2016, and then 21.5 the next 2. They could do a lot with almost 37 MM off the books the next two offseasons.
  7. Right now, we're 20 games out of 1st with a .387 WP, and still 9.5 games above the Astros. Even if we replaced our entire team with the Iowa roster, we'd have trouble catching them.
  8. There's a guy I'd like to have in case they decide not to turn the Cubs into the 1993-2011 Pirates. Choo just turned 30, and could be worth a 5 year deal, especially judging by the upcoming free agent class. What would it take to pry him away from the Indians, and would it be worth it?
  9. True as it may be, if I must choke down God awful baseball, I prefer to watch palyers that have a chance to play a role in the future, and Hinshaw does not fit that mold as far as I'm concerned. Beliveau does. If they needed the roster spot for someone who really seemed promising, I'd have no problem with it. However, going by minor league career numbers alone, Hinshaw is basically an older, poor mans Beliveau, or a lower-middle class Scott Maine.
  10. Vogelbach may not be knocking the ball out of the park at the rate he was early on, but I'm liking the fact that he not only continues to hit, but takes a lot of walks as well.
  11. My guess is that the ultimate decision was made by the organization based on the results of the tests he underwent. They probably told him that he could undergo it now, but it wasn't necessary, but to let them know if he feels any elbow discomfort and they'll evaluate further. You could say that they're experimenting, even gambling by letting him pitch.
  12. And they also have to take into consideration the fact that no matter how good your scouting department is, the draft is a complete and utter crapshoot, and unless it's a ridiulously stacked draft, your probably not much more likely to grab a superstar with the 6th pick than you are with the 11th pick.
  13. I still have faith in Ian Stewart coming back from wrist surgery and being an above average 3B, and Vitters at a corner OF spot. The 2013 season will rest very much upon the very young shoulders of Castro, Rizzo, Vitters, Jackson, and Castillo. And of course, there's the rotation. We have a strong 3 in Shark and a solid 4-5 in Wood. Beyond that, who knows. I still understand and respect what Theo and Jed are trying to do for us long term here, but if they change their minds and decide to change courses and go the big market route, I doubt that too many people will think any lesser of them. As been infinitely stated throughout the season, when you're a big market, high revenue franchise, there's no reason for a strong farm system and a competitive big league club to be an either/or proposition.
  14. I totally understand and respect Hoyerstein's plans to build for the future. I just hope that the future arrives sooner than later.
  15. @JonHeymanCBS: sources: bartolo colon fails drug test. subject to 50-game ban. http://t.co/Or24WsNQ I wonder if Billy Beane's finishing up a conversation with Wolf's agent as I type this. Wolf's never pitched in the AL, full time anyway, which could be worth something.
  16. Not sure what you want to know about Golden and Wells. Both are done until next year. Ben Wells probably won't be pitching in games until summer. Juan Carlos Paniagua is in AZ, but he signed a 2013 contract. If you're wondering what Golden injured, he tore his ACL. There normally aren't updates on season-ending surgeries two months after the surgery. With big leaguers, you'll often hear something like the surgery went well not too long after it takes place. Obviously, with minor leaguers, especially low level guys those reports aren't exactly all over Twitter, but I was just wondering if there was any word on their status for 2013.
  17. Have there been any recent status updates on: Reggie Golden's injury? Ben Wells' surgery? Juan Carlos Paniagua's existence?
  18. I didn't notice this until now, but after last night, Rizzo's OPS dipped below .800 for the first time this season, so that adds to the fun.
  19. I'm convinced we'll see our first ever triple header at some point involving Daytona. I'm not convinced that we'll see the D Cubs play 3 full games the rest of the year.
  20. If there's anyone who can take this band of not so loveable losers and turn them into a .500 team by next year, it's the guys currently in our front office.
  21. Perhaps they can just move the Daytona Cubs to Kane County instead.
  22. Always good to send down a young, promising reliever in favor of another 30 something. None of those players are 30 or over. I discovered this fact by looking it up. True story. Almost 30. Hinshaw will be 30 at the end of October,so why send down Beliveau who' been doing well, aside from a few more walks that we'd like? I have no problem with Rusin. I've been all for auditioning him for a while now. Know something about what you post before posting. Please. How about the fact that Beliveau and even Maine are younger, similar power lefty arms with similar K% and notably better BB% throughout their minor league careers? So I was off by a year on his age.
