Okay,,,, After this one I will give up!.... I see how we do things here, we "beat them in submission"! As I said LONG ago! I'm not trying to change anyones mind! You are not going to change mine, so why should I try to change yours! It seems to me that when it comes to Baker, either you are for him or against him! Thus you will not give credit were it is due and you will add blame whenever you can. On this topic you seem to want to ignore many facts of Bakers history as a manager! I have posted facts about Bakers record as a manager! I'm faced with part fact and what others "think" is the cause of countless arm problems faced by Cub pitchers! - Wood who even if you don't want to say so, had COUNTLESS arm problems prior to Baker being the manager!! - Prior who has missed (I will give you) 2 Months due to ARM problems that can not be explained! I don't consider running into a someone or being hit with a baseball unexplained! - Chad Fox had a number of problems prior to last year! - To save the trouble, Williamson will be hurt this year again! His arm! This is the outcome of COUNTLESS problems prior to Baker! - Why is it that only players who have a history of arm problems far into there past, or on other teams, for some reason develop them under baker? Maybe they are just part of that player!! And no ones fault! - Baker haters seem to ignore the fact that NOT ONE Giant pitcher in my memory and also looking back and checking a few names I was unsure of had a Major Arm Injury during Bakers years in SF, this is simply my guess work and also I did look up a lot of names I could not remember on! (if someone else has other info, please post it)! This is just to have a look at how POOR of a job Baker did over a two year time span as a manager of the Giants between 2000 and 2002.. I picked the years out only because that is as far back of a source as I could find, or I would have gone back more. GIANTS 2000 - 2002 PITCHER Trips to the DL....... Alan Embree 15-day DL lower back strain. Shawn Estes 15-day DL tendinitis in his left shoulder. Tim Worrell 15-day DL tendinitis in his right shoulder. Mark Gardner 15-day DL strained right shoulder. Shawn Estes 15-day DL sprained left ankle. Jason Schmidt 15-day DL strained right groin. Jason Christiansen 15-day DL tendinitis in his left elbow. Jay Witasick 15-day DL contusion on his left foot. Manny Aybar 15-day DL right hip flexor. 4 ARM related, 5 NON ARM Related in 2 years. CUBS 2000 - 2002 PITCHER Trips to the DL....... Flash Gordon 15-day DL, with a strained right triceps muscle. Mike Fyhrie 15-day DL with a broken ulna bone in his left arm Courtney Duncan 15-day DL with right shoulder tendinitis Felix Heredia 15-day DL with left shoulder soreness Kerry Wood 15-day DL with right shoulder tendinitis. Kyle Farnsworth 15-day DL with stress fracture in right foot Ron Mahay 15-day DL with bicep tendinitis Carlos Zambrano 15-day DL with a strained right elbow. Jason Bere on 15-day DL strained right shoulder. Juan Cruz on 15-day DL with right arm fatigue. Jon Lieber on 15-day DL with elbow tendinitis. Jason Bere on 15-day DL with groin strain. 10 ARM Related, 2 NON ARM related in 2 years. For a manager who don't use his pitchers correctly or over uses them, he did not do that bad of a job when looking at what the Cubs have gone through over the same time.. Lets look at another team who has a manager that even I would like to see in Chicago... "The Braves over the same time"! Kevin Millwood 60-day DL shoulder injury. Joe Nelson 15-day DL shoulder tendenitis. John Smoltz 15-day DL inflammation of the right elbow and shoulder. Odalis Perez 15-day DL inflimmation in shoulder. Derrick Lewis on the 15-Day DL bicep tendinitis. Horacio Ramirez 15-Day DL tendonitis in left elbow. Albie Lopez 15-Day DL strigned right elbow. Jason Marquis 15-Day DL tendonitis in right shoulder. Albie Lopez 15-Day DL strained right groin. Greg Maddux 15-Day DL inflamed nerves in lower back Derrick Lewis to the 60-Day DL nerve damage in elbow. Albie Lopez 15-Day DL tendonitis in right shoulder. Kevin Gyrboski 15-Day DL sore right elbow. Darren Holmes 15-Day DL laceration on right thumb. Mike Remlinger 15-day DL strained left shoulder. ohn Foster 15-Day DL strained left shoulder. Mike Remlinger 15-Day DL strained left groin. 13 ARM Related, 4 NON ARM related in 2 years! I compair the Cubs, Giants and Braves over the same time frame! The resluts are as what you see! Baker managed teams had the LEAST arm related injuries to pitchers of all three teams. You can take it as a fluke or however you like. The point I'm trying to get to is Baker managed pitchers have shown in his 11 years prior to being with the Cubs to fall below the "normal" leauge average in Arm related injuries. This says to me that he has not over used them to the degree that everyone seems to say he does! "To the point of being hurt"! - Baker LOVES the Vets and will NOT play rookies! Marvin Benard Bill Mueller Pedro Feliz Rich Aurilia Joe Nathan Russ Ortiz Shawn Estes Rod Beck Royce Clayton Darren Lewis TO NAME A FEW that have got a start under Baker! The above players were all gave full time jobs with Dusty Baker! To win or lose! - I'm can not defend anyone that says "that is not enough in X number of years"... I can not defend the production of the SF Giants Farm system.. and i think Baker has little to do with that aspect of the organization. His teams don't have a high OBP? Giants 02 2nd in OBP. 01 3rd in OBP. 00 1st in OBP. 99 3rd in OBP. 98 1st in OBP. 97 5th in OBP. 96 5th in OBP. 95 12th in OBP. 94 13th in OBP. 93 3rd in OBP. Looking at this I have to ask, when are we going to start to lay some blame on the PLAYERS? I have yet to see Baker draw a walk or K in a Cubs uniform! It seems like in his past (if he had any pull with Sabean (spelling) he went after OBP type of guys!)... Larry Dierker: MY BAD! I was thinking he was the manager of the Astros a few seasons ago when they started poor then the managers was fired! I made a mistake! I feel in black and white I have shown! - Baker to be 19th all time winning % of managers with over 1,000 Wins. - Baker to be 1st in winning % of Cub managers in the last 60 years! - Baker as a manager has proven to be a winner. (His teams records)! - Baker managed teams have had LESS ARM related injuries over a 2 years period then other teams! Cubs included! - Baker has given Rookies a shot to play everyday in his past, when the rookie has proven to be a MLB ready player! - Baker managed teams traditionally DUE have a high OBP. However I will not give credit or take credit from Baker on this one! To me this is a player issue! Either the GM gets the guys that get on base or he don't! Either way I do not feel that this is Bakers fault one way or the other! Things I have strong feelings about! - How anyone can blame Baker for Prior's being hit by a baseball or running into a second baseman is beyond me! Prior has been on the DL ONCE for an arm related injury that can not be explained. Even then one could argue it was because of the Achilles! - How anyone can blame Baker for Wood's injuries the last two years is above me! Wood was a MAJOR INJURY RISK starting in 1998. - I don't blame Baker for using Wood last year out of the bullpen! I do not feel it is Bakers job to assess the risk of using a pitcher, he only goes on guidance from the Cubs Medical team and if Hendry feels Wood should still be pitching. It is NOT Bakers call to put Wood on the DL and shut him down for the season! Can anyone argue with inside knowledge argue Wood asked not to pitch, Medical staff advised against it or Hendry said don't use him? We as fans are setting ourselves up to fail if we just assume everything to be the fault of Baker! There are lots of things I did not agree with or do not like about Baker! However I do not have the record as a manager or player for that matter to second guess moves that did not work! Or the ones that worked. This will be my last post on this topic.... :) I look forward to much more Cubs debate in the coming season! I really wish you all the best, no hard feelings! We all want the same thing, What is best for the Cubs. We just have different views on how or what is the best! Either way, I think we all want them to win! Go Cubs.

Dierker was run out of town for consistently getting into the playoffs and getting knocked out by ATL. You know 4 division titles in 5 years with the Astros. Williams replaced Dierker and then was fired. He was replaced by Garner. Dierker was fired at for a reason! Then Williams came in and turned the whole thing around! Why not then just hire Williams, he did something Dierker could not do? Williams was then fired the next season and replaced by Garner and the same thing happened for the Astros. They had the talent Garner and Williams proved it. Dierker was not winning with the talent that is the reason he was fired.

1. Dempster had reconstructive elbow surgery and he went 3 days straight, 6 times last season, once in 04. Williamson pitched in 4 of his first 7 games back, is this abuse? Why has no one pointed it out? So as a manager if you don’t have the ability to play a player when they are needed, how much are your hands tied? Why is this not brought up in arguments for or against Baker? Well his hands were tied because he could not bring in player X due to his surgery last year? This just is not a good argument in my opinion. 2. The point you make in point 2 is a good one and I agree with it.. Other then I don’t blame Baker on the offense problems, I blame no leadoff or second place hitter. Also I blame the ability of Cub players to draw walks! Every Cub fan in the world was pissed about Baylors use of Sac Bunts, giving up outs! Now every Cub fan in the world seems pissed about Bakers lack in using them! What is it going to be guys? In addition the point of the post at that time was not to show Baker as good or bad in them years! It was more geared to the people who say we won in 03 because of the Astros losing! But then say the Cubs should have been better in 04 and 05 but were not because of Baker. 3. See above reason for my reply! I’m not in any way saying that the team had more or less talent. What I’m saying is everyone wants to say 03 happened because the Astros lost! Then they want to turn that around and say Baker is the the reason they lost in 04 and 05. All I’m saying is give the guy a little credit for the good things and do find so many faults in everything that has happened since. We seem to want to give Baker NO CREDIT for 03 and all the Blame for 04 and 05 and that just is not the case. 4. I read the thread… Here are the other options I seen…. 1. Fredi Gonzalez 2. Davey Johnson 3. Ned Yost 4. Larry Dierker Did you post them names? 5. I Agree! 6. I have said I would take Johnson over Baker in a prior post in this thread! I would rather not have the Deirker that was ran out of Houston only to have Phil Garner come in and turn it around. I would not take the Rothschild that was ran out of Tampa. To be honest I don’t know much about Gonzalez! I would even give a chance to Wally Backman, I know he has LOTS of problems in his past! But, hey, I like the guy!

Point of matter! So if a player has a history of being hurt we should reduce his playing time? Why is this same approach not taken with position players? Should it be? By the idea you have then we should hold ARam out of about 40 games next season! He has show a "history" of being hurt the past few years! In addition we should have held Nomar out of about 100 game last season (Before he got hurt), due to his history! I'm not willing to do this with a position player who plays "everyday", why would I want to do it with a pitcher who pitches every 4 days! Look I understand a player with an injury history "might" be treated a little different! But dose that make it right? Is that the way it should be? You are handcuffing yourself as a manager and a team if you have to treat one player different on a team! As a manager I HAVE to pull Wood after 100 pitches, if he has 4 innings of work or 8 innings! If he has 4 innings of work that screws with my bullpen the rest of the week! That forces ALL other starters to go a little longer then what they "normally" would go! Thus under "NORMAL" thinking would cause undue stress on my bullpen and the rest of my starters to make up for ONE players inablility to go a little longer! (This pitch count thing and things like that are and should be totally different thread, :) )...... As far this stuff about the Astros or Cards basically "gave it" to the Cubs! The Braves rolled over and just went to sleep so the Cubs could go one more step... Okay! I buy that!!!! That is what happened, the Astros rolled over! The Cubs lucked there way into the playoffs in 03! Cool! If you take that approach how can you follow that up with, the Cubs have underachived that last two years?! You say in one argument that the Cubs basically should not have made the playoffs in 03 because of a poor job by Baker or for whatever reason! Then you say, that Baker is a poor manager and should have won more games the past two seasons then he has and he has had the same team if not less of one! In 04 we won more games then 03! Yet Baker did a bad job as a manager despite the more wins and less production from RF and his top two starters in 03. See I'm not understanding the two! First you say, they were lucky to get into the playoffs. Then you say the reason that they have not made it the next two years were due to Baker! How can that be? All I'm saying is give credit when it is due! If you feel the Cubs were not a good team in 03 and should not have been the playoffs in 03. Then don't say that they should have been in 04 or 05 or that they underachieved them years! Because in them years they had more players hurt and not as much talent. I have read countless times,,, Baker is not a good manager! Then the same person will say that a manager will only win or lose 2 or 3 games a year! Then the same person will say, Fire Baker! In addition, everyone is so fast to say, Fire Baker! However they offer NO FIX! No opinion of who the next manager should be! Don't come to people with a problem, come to them with a fix! Give me names! Who do you want to manage the team? The arm chair GM's here seem to have the ability to say "Fire Baker" however they are unable to say, Hire NAME HERE! Steve Stone? Mark Grace? My heart is with you! I would love to see Grace or Stone in the dougout! But my head says, you fire a guy with over 1K MLB victories, 1st all time winning % in the last 60 years for the Cubs, 19th ALL TIME winning % of managers with 1K MLB Victories! For someone with ZERO MLB WINS AS A MANAGER!!! Now you say Fire Baker and Hire,,,, Cox! I may jump on your boat if you have found a way to pry Cox away from the Braves! Give me a better option, then Stone and Grace! Someone was right about one thing, this board can be addictive! You all have a great night "EVEN BAKER HATERS",,,, I will try to reply more later! Chow!

Probably will be my last post for tonight, I can see I'm not going to change minds... However that is not the point, it is to simply talk baseball! Cubs Baseball! Although I may not agree with everything posted, I think we all can agree that the end result of CUB WINS is what we all want! Now I will start with "The pitcher abuse is quite evident in the injuries to wood and prior in 2004 and 2005" I assume that the fact Wood had a Major arm operation in 1998 and had been on the DL 6 times prior to Baker even being hired as manager had no factor in this, abuse? Prior,,, DL 2002 - Prior placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hamstring. 2003 - Prior on 15-day DL with shoulder soreness. (ran into Alt 2nd Base) 2004 - Missed First two months due to inter elbow and achilles pains. 2005 - Missed first start of the year! Pitches until he gets hit in the arm with a hit baseball! In 3 years with Baker as a Manager Prior has missed I will give you one month, due to an Unexplainable arm pain! The other month I'm giving to the achilles! I'm not going to say that the arm pain could have been a result of the achilles problem! To assume the achilles is the cause would be just as easy as it is to assume it was Baker the year prior. Se we have a pitcher who has missed basically 2 months in 3 years due to a unexplainable arm pain! We have a pitcher with a who showed MAJOR ARM problems in his past, Prior to Baker! And we blame Baker for miss use! I'm not going to buy it! Your choice - to me its a matter of risk. the fact that wood had a history of injury problems is all the more reason to reduce his risk by overuse. aside from colliding with giles, prior's injuries all point to overuse. welcome to the forum - be careful - its addictive! And I am willing to bet you do change your mind on some things. I sure have! All but Giles! Prior pulled his hamstring due to over use? Prior got hit in the elbow with a baseball due to over use? Prior hurt his Achillies going into spring training due to over use? Over use pitching? I'm trying to understand the logic here! Because he was over used pitching, he pulled his hamstring running the bases? Because he was pitching so much he was unable to move out of the way of a hit baseball? Because of a rough winter of over use he hurt his achillies going into spring? I'm sorry, I just don't follow! Oh,,,, Cedeno and other Rookie issues, I will address them! Lets use last season and Cedeno and Murton and Dubois for that matter! Everyone wanted to play the rookies once we were out of it? Okay, me also! On August 19th we were 5 1/2 games behind the Astros and had just beat them 2 ot of 3! Were we out of it? On August 29th we had lost something like 7 of 9 and were like 8 1/2 games out of it! Wood was shut down! Murton played nearly every game after that point! Cedeno played in 3/4ths of the games from that point until he was hurt and did not play in the last 25 games! Dubois, why was he not given a shot? Well, he moved right over to Clevland and got that shot didn't he? If the manager if Clevland knows not to play Dubois (he is not ready) then maybe we should thank Baker for not playing him! It seems as Cub fans we have the memory of 10 minutes! We only want to remember some parts of things! 1989 who did we beat to win the division? Don't look it up! 1989 who was the player in the playoffs that killed us with something like a 700 avg? See what I mean! We only seem to remember the bad things for some reason!!! The point is, we just remember Cedeno did not play much the last 30 games of the year! We don't remember he was hurt and could not play! We say "once were were out of it, why didn't Murton play", "wood pitching in meaningless games" despite the fact that when wood was pitching in games we were 5 1/2 games out of the WC! Once we were 8 1/2 + games and out of it! Murton did play! Everyday! Check the game logs! Starting even before August 29th! Maybe around early to middle of August he started playing nearly every day! You guys have a great night! Go Cubs

It should have been much easier for the Cubs to win with Sosa (when he was as good if not better then Bonds or NEARLY THE SAME)!! But the following managers could not do it! Jim Lefebvre .500 Jim Riggleman .472 Don Baylor .459 Tom Trebelhorn .434 Bruce Kimm .423 yes, and had prior and zambrano been there . . . they might have won even after 1998 (which was as good as any baker year). Prior and Zambrano are not in SF for Bonds, in fact he has never had the caliber of pitcher of either of them two! So you are saying??? With Prior and Zambrano and Sosa (in his prime) any manager could with with them? Okay, I agree! But that is not what we are talking about! The point of winning with Bonds in the line up is easy! okay! I followed that up with, Sosa (what a few years ago) would have been just the hitter (with less walks) that Bonds is,,, that would be near the same I think! However Sosa could not make the above managers winners!

All your points are well taken and I must say again, "I don't agree with every move that Baker makes"! I for one happen to agree with a few of the items pointed out to me! I will start with.... Overuse of pitchers and bullpen.... - We used to have 4 man rotations as "not so long ago" as 1980's. Were any of them "great managers" of the 80's accused of abuse of the arms they had pitching on 3 days rest? **We can open whole other thread to talk about this topic** - I'm sure we could all agree not every player is the same, correct? Example: Perez seemed to tire down the end of the season from playing everyday! Were as another player playing the same position would not have tired. Why then because we hear that a pitcher has reached 100 pitches, he is done? I mean for example using pitchers: Maddux once he reaches about 85 pitches he is done! Zambrano, he could maybe last 150 (if he were allowed) and still be effective as a pitcher.... So why is this 100 pitch count the same for EVERY pitcher that has ever thrown a baseball the past 20 years? Where is the study on this? Listen any coach will tell you to become a better hitter you have to hit in the cage! To be better in the field you have to take fly balls! Why with pitching do we say to become (or stay the same) you have to throw less? All I'm saying is some how we have lost site of the of the fact that each player is different (pitchers also) and it is not abuse to ALL if they throw over 100 pitches in a game! To allow Maddux (at this point) to throw 100 is abuse! To allow Zambrano to throw OVER 100 is not abuse, it might make him stronger later! What makes a person stronger? Repeated action! If lift weights you don't become stronger by lifting 10lbs 100 times,,,, every five days! You become stronger by lifting 10lbs, 100 times, then 110, then 120 and so on, every other day! I just disagree with abuse of pitchers on Bakers part, because I don't agree with this 100 pitch count or 3 days in a row of pitching! --- Over use of Farns and Wartz! Lets say he did over use them, what was his other options? --- Miss use of Rem, What was his other options? --- Perez or miss lineup,,,,, consider the lineups and players we have had,,, what were the better options and did he try them at any point in the seasons? What were the results when he did use them? Did he prove you right or wrong with the use of a lineup you would have wrote? His in game actions and so on? As I said, I don't agree with everything! But, who am I to question it? I have no proof and you don't either, that hitting (INSERT NAME) in that situation would have worked better then what Baker did! If Baker is this poor of an in game manager HOW can he be so LUCKY to place 19th on the ALL TIME Winning % of managers all time? I have seen guys with luck, but no one can be that lucky!!!! I guess I don't get it,,,, how can only 18 other managers in the HISTORY of the game have a higher winning % then Baker if he is that bad??? I just don't get it! I will try to read back later and reply! :) Have a great day! EDITED::: Also Perez... Hitting His top two production wise spots in the lineup! 2nd .283avg .310obp 7th .286avg .311obp I don't like Perez hitting there either... But really what options did you like? It's not like this cubs team is packed full of OBP guys! Patterson as leadoff... I did not like it either! But speed was not a strong suite of this team! I have seen it said Baker had a few of the Best Cubs teams in a long time! Lets review that! - Low OBP guys - No Speed - To many K guys - Not enough D! - Pitchers with a history of being hurt! The Cubs teams I have seen looked good on paper! But if we are going to truly look at them and be honest and evaluate it's abilities lets look at everything, not just the HR and the STAR abilities of the pitchers! The hitters have to do more then hit HR's and the STAR pitchers have to be stars not DL players!

My first post here! Just found the site and I'm happy to join you guys, thanks for having me! As I'm sure I don't agree with everything that others say, I'm sure that everyone will not agree with what I say. I do not wish to argue a point or try to change someones mind, I don't think you can change mine, so i don't want to change yours! Let me start with this, I felt as far back as 1997 that Dusty Baker was the best manager in baseball! To me I never could understand how he would win year in and year out with teams in SF that had little starting pitching and would seem to have even less hitting. It goes without saying I was beside myself when he came to the Cubs and I'm still happy he works for this team! I don't always agree with every move Baker makes, however I will never second guess it! I know that the move I thought would work, will not always work also and I don't have over 40 years of baseball and 10+ years of managing in the Majors to prove I'm right like he does! I'm not blind to the fact that Baker makes mistakes! I'm also not blind to the fact that since 1944 he has the highest winning % of any Cubs manager (1944 is the year before we went to the WS for the last time, I used that as my yard stick for his winning %, it could be since 1930?)! I have a question, is it the majority that feels Baker should be fired or the minority? From all the reading I do it seems like the majority! It seems like every move Baker makes on the field the "majority" don't agree with it! If the majority don't want Baker! (highest winning % since 1945 Cubs managers - 19 ALL TIME in winning % among managers with 1,000 wins) What do they want? Steve Stone? Ryne Sandberg? Mark Grace? I think I will take my chance with Baker on this one! I will even go one step more and let you know who I would not mind seeing over Baker! - Davy Johnson - Whitey Herzog - Bobby Cox - Wally Backman (so I even give you one with 0 MLB games under his belt). I don't think Johnson or Herzog is looking for a job, Cox has one! With Backman's history I don't think we will beat down his door anytime soon! You don't agree with Baker, so what? Prove to me how the moves you would have made in a game would have worked and won the game for us? Prove to me how you think Baker don't use his pitchers correclty? Prove to me why playing a rookie is better then playing a vet? Prove to me when and why Baker has not given a good rookie a shot at playing? I have proven how Baker is a winner as a manager! - 19 ALL TIME in WINNING (1,000 victories) %.... - Highest total WINNING % of any Cub manager since 1944. I'm sorry guys, Baker is who I have to go with until someone gives me a better option then Steve Stone and Mark Grace! I think we could all agree any of us could go up and talk about baseball on a TV/Radio, I think we could also all agree that don't make us good managers or GM's! Just my thoughts! Nice First Post! :):) You guys have a great day! OH Cub Managers!
