    Summed up perfectly by Hendry saying that whether or not they trade for a bat depends on how they hit the rest of this week. Floyd was really good yesterday, so we don't need another bat. We can just depend on him the rest of the year. did you see how far he hit that one foul ball? we're set.

    Duncan has a 706 OPS v. lefties this year and a 695 OPS v. lefties in his career.

    His FIP ERA was usually good. The only bad year was the year with NYY. My guess would be that the last few years were flukes. he is possibly a little lucky this year, but he's been very unlucky the last few years. He always had good ratios, except for H/9, which isn't an entirely reliable stat (dependent on luck and defense, as well as general "stuff"). It seems much more likely to me that this is the "real" Vazquez, given how good his rates are usually.

    you hope that a cub (aka a player on your favorite team) is recalled and that he fails so you will be right. isn't there a problem here? you still haven't given any reason as to why he sucks or is not starting quality. you just say, "he's not good," and act like that's the end of the discussion.

    Mind you, that's a play that Theriot very well might have needed to dive at just to get to. As such, there's no guarantee he would have made an error. Better range gives more chances to make "errors." Is that kinda like how the best base stealers are also the ones who get thrown out the most? well, sort of, but that doesn't always hold up, and the definition of best basestealer is kind of vague (do you mean high total and high percentage or just highest total or something else?). but yeah, that's the basic idea.

    why he hasn't pitched yet? he wasn't going to start according to the PBP guy. he was going to be the first reliever in.

    1) Because he plays for the Cubs and their parade of marginal OF's 2) I'd bet everything I own that Murton's career stats end up more similar to Ryan Church than Bobby Abreu. 1) that doesn't answer my question. you said he doesn't have a place on any roster as a starting RF. why? Using OPS, he was slightly above average for the length of 2006 among RF, and was well above average in the second half of the year. 2) That wasn't the point I was trying to make. He compares to a lot of people, but he's only played one full season. It's almost useless to make any comparisons at this point.

    why does matt murton not have a spot on a major league team? you're still making baseless claims and hoping they stick. through age 24, Murton also compares to Bobby Abreu and Kirk Gibson, so that argument holds no water.

    Better. Sarcasm aside, I just dont *get* the pro Murton crowd. I just don't get it. Hey, he posts an OBP 30 points higher than his AVG, which no other Cub does, and its what Billy Beane said is great, so bla bla lets make obnoxious sigs and pictures about how Murton is getting hosed and hasn't gotten a chance ever but lets forget the 700+ AB's he's had bla bla bla. He's a fourth OF. why? you keep saying this but have nothing to back up your claim aside from about 150 at bats to start the year. his 809 OPS last year ranked 7th among qualified LF in the NL. he was also much improved in the second half and he has a history of minor league success. this isn't like jason dubois and his complete lack of success over any extended period of time, Murton was a quality outfielder for an entire season, and he was much, much better than average for about half a year.

    Why is Floyd a better option to hit for power this year? He hasn't shown a lick of power all year, I don't know why he'd suddenly start hitting for power given his age and injury history. we don't "need" power, we need production, which comes from a variety of sources. Murton is a much better option than Floyd and he has been since Floyd was signed.

    So then doesn't this indicate to you we need a power bat in the OF? Or shall we attempt to catch the biggest HR-hitting team in the league with the likes of Matt Murton and Angel Pagan? if we can make a big splash, sure. i don't get where i indicated that we shouldn't go out and make a trade. the fact is that murton is probably the best option to regularly play RF on the team, given what he did last year (specifically in the second half/last two months of last year). If we aren't going to make a trade, he should be given a lengthy look as a starter in RF. I'm sure Floyd has some injury that requires a 15-day vacation to give Murton that shot.

    why do people keep mentioning murton's power when NONE of our outfielders hit for power (sans Soriano, but he doesn't really fit in this conversation)? Floyd's SLG is below 400, Jones hasn't done anything all year, and Pagan sucks. signing floyd was such a bad idea.

    the cubs don't necessarily need more power, they need better baseball players in general. murton is in all likelihood a much better player than Floyd. In each of August and September last year, Murton had 4 and 5 home runs. Floyd has 4 home runs this year. Murt's last two months of 06 would be ideal for this team (and any team for that matter) and it wouldn't cost us a damn thing. Murton had 3 months last year that were better than anything that Floyd has done in a single month this year, and he had another month that was comparable. Murton's second half OPS last year would rank 3rd among RF this year. Murton is a better bet for power now and he probably always was. The only question is about his defense, and he is definitely not a downgrade from Floyd out there. Calling up Murton isn't going to stop them from upgrading elsewhere (or even in right field if they can get a Griffey/Dunn type).
