Their eight minor leaguers will be joined by minor leaguers from the Angels, A's, Rays, and Red Sox organizations. The season will start next weekend and will run through November 14th. He's been a steady producer for the Iowa Cubs, though he's never forced the issue and looks unlikely to get a taste of the big leagues before the campaign is over. In 514 plate appearances at Iowa, he...1111Sun, 15 Sep 2024 14:36:03 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/iowa-cubs-lineup-owen-caissie-ed-howard-matt-shaw/Overall, the Cubs have had a nice year from a hitting prospect point of view. Pete Crow-Armstrong is finding his footing as a solid MLB player (if not more with the progress in his offensive game), and down on the farm, most of the Cubs best-and-brightest have been shades of "good" to "great" on...1107Fri, 13 Sep 2024 11:55:01 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/why-the-cubs-should-promote-cam-smith-to-south-bend-immediately-r1064/When the Cubs drafted Florida State third baseman Cam Smith with the 14th pick in last month’s draft, they hoped they had found the guy who will lock down the hot corner in their next championship-winning core. He was regarded highly by MLB Pipeline coming out of college, with 55-grade hit and f...1064Sun, 25 Aug 2024 16:28:12 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/there-are-encouraging-signs-but-matt-shaw-is-a-long-way-from-ready-to-succeed-in-mlb-r1062/One of the privileges of living in our time is that we all have considerable access to highlights of even minor-league players. It's easier to get tangibly excited, and to gain a real sense of a player's strengths, than it was for fans who wanted to follow top prospects a decade or two ago--let...1062Fri, 23 Aug 2024 15:12:01 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/catching-up-on-potential-september-call-up-slugger-owen-caissie-r1046/The San Diego Padres drafted Owen Caissie in the second round of the 2020 MLB draft, which was shortened to five rounds due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Before he could step into the box with the Padres, AJ Preller shipped him off, along with two other prospects, for Yu Darvish and Victor Caratini....1046Mon, 19 Aug 2024 13:15:01 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/brandon-birdsell-the-cubs-starting-pitcher-prospect-nobody-is-talking-about-r1033/At his repeat of Double-A this year, Brandon Birdsell had a 21.1 K%, 4.2 BB%, and a very solid 3.63 ERA. His season at Tennessee was capped off with seven nearly no-hit innings and a 35-inning walkless streak. This earned him a well-deserved promotion to Triple-A Iowa, where he has just complete...1033Sat, 10 Aug 2024 13:33:48 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/cubs-minor-league-hitter-of-the-month-july-2024-r1022/What a great month for hitters in the Cubs minor leagues! There were several players that had good months that didn't even get onto the Honorable Mention grouping. Let's get right to it!  HONORABLE MENTION 1B Jonathon Long - South Bend Cubs/Tennessee Smokies - 18 G, 19-61, .312/...1022Tue, 06 Aug 2024 12:14:02 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/cubs-minor-league-pitcher-of-the-month-july-2024-r1016/The Cubs minor league system has an "offensive" slant; most of the top ten (outside of Jaxon Wiggins) are hitters, and the Cubs spent most of their high-profile draft selections this summer on bats again. There are still a lot of really exciting and fun pitchers in the Cubs' system - many of the...1016Sun, 04 Aug 2024 18:10:00 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/looking-at-the-prospects-the-cubs-acquired-in-the-mark-leiter-jr-trade-r1005/When the Cubs signed Mark Leiter Jr. a while back, he was a complete lottery ticket. Already 30 years old and a clear journeyman in the league, the Cubs worked with his pitch and turned him into a fairly deadly 7th—and 8th-inning option, especially using his split-finger fastball against left-ha...1005Tue, 30 Jul 2024 19:12:02 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/cubs-prospects-midseason-minor-league-health-assessment-r939/A week from now, the Cubs system will look different, and regardless of whether the Cubs start winning, keep losing, or just tread water the rest of the month, more changes are coming. They will draft at least one player who will immediately vault into the top 10 of the system, and the range fro...939Fri, 12 Jul 2024 14:13:01 +0000https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/cubs-minor-league/cubs-prospects-on-the-decline-pitchers-r938/The reality of pitching prospects is that for every guy on the rise (like Porter Hodge or Hunter Bigge), you're probably able to find two or three who went the opposite way. Due to the stress put on pitchers and the amount of variance that is possible, pitchers come and go freely, often, and unp...938Wed, 10 Jul 2024 18:05:01 +0000
