I'm a big optimist, it's fun. So I admit I'm pretty fascinated with the draft. I'm no scout and no nothing, but I'm currently of the Cubbie-koolaid mind that Kantrovitz is smart; that Breslow and the pitch-lab process is really good; and that Hawkins adds insight into pitching scouting-and-development. So I think it's really fun to provide Breslow and the pitching-development team some volume of excellent talent to work with. Having draft few talented pitchers lately, and then with most of them being injured a lot, I feel like Breslow hasn't had the biggest pool of talent to work with. So I think this is really an exciting draft.

I also like the concept of taking Harton underslot so that with Ferris they've added two rotation prospects that they scouts as top-20-worthy picks.

I wasn't sure how the Horton-Ferris prices would come into yesterday; so actually being able to afford three HS projection picks is really fun. Getting top-10 draft budget and overage sure helps.

This should be a fun several years to see where Ferris, McGwire, Mule, and Paccioloa are at by age 21 and 22.

There's been a lot of hype about Breslow and the pitch lab. This gives him the collection of arms to put the hype to the test. Would be so awesome to have it turn out great and have the hype be vindicated.

11th rounder: LHP Branden Noriega,

MLB listed him with no school but Baseball Reference says he played at Miami Dade. Maybe a draft and follow?

The future closer at 7.

Once again, Law’s rankings were early and he never updated his ranking closer to the draft like the other major analysts (who all had Horton 12-24) but if you look at the recent 1.7 history, you’ll see a successful closer would be a pretty good outcome: https://www.baseball-reference.com/draf ... type_unk=0

I do really like that they are drafting guys who are hard throwers.

They're going to convert him to a pitcher, for real.

Nope - next pick is an actual catcher. (rd 15)

From BN:

Round 15 (443) – Haydn McGeary, C (Colorado Mesa): It’s not a pitcher! McGeary, 22, put up hilariously absurd and ridiculous numbers in D2, and in the Appalachian League this summer. His .481/.579/1.061 slash line – yes, that last one is his SLUGGING percentage – was the best in D2 this year.

16th rounder is another prep arm who is probably going to get an offer for the whole remaining pool and it might not be enough:

I like the seeming strategy at this stage of the draft where everything is a flyer of essentially just data scouting, sorting by velo/spin/exit velo and working your way down. I think teams that do this exclusively are making a big mistake, but at this point in the draft or for your throw-ins on a trade it's the right call.

Overall I like the draft. It really infuses some much needed pitching into the lower levels of the org. That said Lee + Prielipp still seems very likely to end up better than Horton + Ferris, while Parada + Prielipp probably does as well. There are good reasons to dislike Lee and/or Parada, but passing on both seems destined to backfire.

It'll be interesting over the next year or two how the org's pitching, which at this point has almost all been been acquired and/or primarily developed in the Breslow era, does. The team clearly thinks they're in the cool kids pitching club with the Rays, Guardians, Dodgers, Brewers, and Yankees. Holistically they've been checking the boxes in the minors, but guys like Thompson and Steele need to be wave 1 and not the crown jewels for it to not just be empty messaging.

I'm pretty stoked at the possibilities with this draft as there are quite a number of quality baseball names on the list but JP Wheat maybe the best of the bunch. PLUS he's 6-5 185 so his name is very apropos.

The last pick, JuCo product Ke'Shun Collier, looks a hell of a lot like Juan Pierre in his video. Slapping the ball in play and then using great speed.

That the Cubs are now drafting from the conference I competed in does not bode well.
