sticking with my resolution to be more like derwood going forward
year 2 in serie B has been a GRIND. i started out losing like 5 of my first 6 matches because unlucky scheduling had me play 6 top 10 serie b squads right off the bat. I think i had one draw in there but it tanked my squad's morale. I came off my first serie B season expecting some investment from the board but I got none and am actually running at a deficit, so i had to just grab some loans and hope for the best. I have a couple good midfielders, one decent winger and one decent fullback.
I eventually turned to an asymmetric 5-1-1-3 because i couldn't link my defense to my forwards without a defensive mid. I briefly had some success switching to a 4-3-3 but i think it was mainly because i was catching teams off guard. that tactic dried up fast. I switched back to the 5-1-1-3, but this time I pushed my fullbacks up the pitch and told them to overlap with my wingers. Not sure yet if it's a longterm tactic or if it's just working in the meantime, but after a couple games of experimenting, i've scored 10 goals in my last three matches. Even with those ten goals, I'm averaging less than .75 goals per game because my only strikers are 19 year old 2 star guys who have good potential but haven't hit it yet. I'm basically running my strikers as poachers now, but it's working as long as i can keep pressure on the box (that's what she said.)
Right now I'm 9-12-10, in 11th place, and I look pretty clear to stay up. I've given up on hoping for more money from my board in the short term so I really have tried to consolidate my roster, get the young guys some loans, and hope to hit on one good attacking signing and then just pray some guys develop. It's been a fun challenge, but man I don't know how long it will take to get to Serie A.
