Aja really nailed that The Hills Have Eyes remake, gd. Instinct drove me to watch it on 7/4 and there’s definitely a tongue in cheek “America f yeah” to this movie (and Piranha 3D) that just gets me…Greeeeat horror movie too, perfect ending

Last Night in Soho is on HBOMax now. The way I feel about it is a lot like the way I felt about Baby Driver: Really impressed upon finishing it, with a sense of "Hell yeah, that movie horsefeathering rocked" and then a few days later a sense of "What movie did I watch the other night, I forget?". It was great and I enjoyed every second of it, but on the flip side of the same coin, in a month's time I'll forget it ever existed.

I couldn’t really decide how I felt about it, but you nailed it. It’s cool but in the end it’s like a sugar rush.

Yeah, I was really looking forward to it, but it just kind of fell apart. I thought Matt Smith was great in it, and parts of the movie are absolutely gorgeous, but it weirdly felt like Wright bit off more than he could chew.

I disagree. It was in the classic horror movie genre. Really well done, I liked it a lot. Some movies are not repeat watch movies. This is one of them. The movie was nothing like Baby Driver, which was about half a movie and then ruined by Jamie Foxx's overacting (badly).

Elvis was a lot of fun to watch. It was less of a movie and more like a compilation of key moments of Elvis' life, but it was highly entertaining. As far as the string of recent music biopics goes (I guess starting with Phoenix in Walk the Line), I'd say this guy might actually be the best. He kills it. There's also a fantastic performance by a guy who kills it as Little Richard.

Finally watched The Northman. There was nothing wrong with it, but it just didn't do it for me. Dug the Bjork cameo though. Oh, and the highlight for me was

Thanks for this, because the guy playing Elvis was a big sticking point for me. Happy to hear that they’re showing black R&B artists instead of just an Elvis slob fest.

Joaquin in Walk the Line was pitch perfect. You saying it’s better than that?

Edit: BTW, the Elvis 1956 documentary voiced by Levon Helm is absolutely fantastic.

The film does a pretty solid job of making a point that Elvis didn’t steal R&B anymore than someone like Chuck Berry or BB King did. He was raised in the only white family in an exclusively black community so R&B was always a part of his life and wasn’t just something he stumbled upon for profit. He always accepted and respected by black R&B artists as one of their own. As far as portraying other famous R&B artists, the movie also features BB King, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Mahalia Jackson.

Yes I think so. I think a big part of it also had to do with the fact that he’s more or less an unknown. As great as Phoenix was as Cash he’s still Joaquin Phoenix. I wouldn’t recognize this actor if he walked in the door so I think that helped a whole lot with the immersion.

So my GF and I started to watch it again last night, because we're both big fans of Wright and wanted to give it another shot....but, no, still thought it sucked. All of his post-Pegg movies are just hugely style over substance...and, hey, style horsefeathering rules, but there's gotta be something there. I think Scott Pilgrim is the exception, mainly because it was based on someone else's story. The dude needs a creative/writing partner again, because he's got some cool ideas and an amazing visual style (LNiS is, IMO, his best looking movie by FAR), but there's something missing on his own (and I know he co-wrote LNiS with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, but that's clearly not who needs to be working with).

Like, he's trying to do Gialli-style horror with LNiS, but that horsefeathers happily wallowed in how horsefeathers up and lurid and pulpy it was. Wright's movies, even at their best, are basically completely absent of sex/sexuality, so you end up with something like this, which is practically yelling, "ewwwww, gross, sex!"

So, yeah, bummer of a movie.
