I go to movies and concerts by myself all the time. My wife has horsefeathers taste in music, so she isn’t invited

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
Went to a movie alone once and it was great. Pre kids and I think my wife was in Vegas for a Bachelorette party. Went and saw Mad Max Fury Road and it rocked.
Would do again, but now with two kids, even if my wife leaves me alone, like this weekend (incidentally) I can't just take off to a theater lol.

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
I got to movies by myself on a somewhat regular occasion. For a few reasons. The main reason being that I really like to go to movies I'm excited about on opening weekend. My wife will go to some, but not all movies on opening weekend, and none of my friends enjoy opening weekends either. So, sometimes I gotta make the choice to go on my own.

with everything being reserved seating usually one person is deputized to buy all the tickets
I’m good about venmoing in a timely manner but my friends are pathetic deadbeats
so i end up seeing a fair number of movies myself
also they do stupid horsefeathers like not see Nolan or avatar movies in imax so it just makes it easier

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
This isn't quite a seeing a movie alone story but it's close. My wife and I were spending a week in the mountains one summer, and decided to see a movie. The only thing out that seemed interesting was Bruno, the Sacha Cohen movie. We were alone in the theater apart from one 50-year old guy. About 5 minutes into the movie there is a close up of a penis, which then shouts "BRUNO!" with an animated mouth on the tip, and the guy immediately got up and left. Most enjoyable moment in a theater that I can remember.

I've traveled solo so much for work that going anywhere by myself doesn't bother me in the least anymore. The dinner thing is much easier if you sit at the bar to eat. That way you only take up one spot and you're in a much less conspicuous position.

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
I prefer going to movies alone and with as few other people in the theater as possible. One of my biggest pet peeves is people talking during movies and I either have the worst luck with that or most people are horsefeathers that don't care about who is around them in a theater.

Why not just wait for movies to come out so you can watch them at home then? I mean...I understand not wanting to watch with other people, but that's sorta one of the main reasons to go to a theater is to have a communal experience.

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
That's why I really don't get the going to a concert alone thing; going to a movie solo makes sense because during the thing you're there to see everyone should shut the horsefeathers up, but a huge part of a concert (at least for me) is the shared reaction to the show with the people I go with. If I'm there by myself, just standing around between songs or sets and having nothing but a phone to mess around on is a straight bummer. More power to the folks who are willing to shell out the big money to go to concerts by themselves; that's just not for me at all.
Going to bar or restaurant by myself? Oh, hell yeah; who gives a horsefeathers. Kinda just want everyone to shut up while I'm making a food/booze monster out of myself anyway.

I go for the audio & visual experience, not because other human beings are there.
And while it's more fun going to concerts with friends I am not going to miss a show I want to see only because no one wants to go with me. I passed going to what ended up being SRV's last show and also the last Pink Floyd tour for stupid reasons and I'll regret those decisions the rest of my life.

COUNTERPOINT: 90% of the shows I go to have groups of people just loudly talking DURING THE SONGS and I want to punch them all in the neck

The only way I'm never talking during a concert is if it's some wimpy folk troubadour or trembly indie pop horsefeathers where you can hear the audience doing EVERYTHING.

You can hear them at any concert, because at the loud rock shows, they just yell louder

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
Man, TBH, those sound like some lame ass rock shows if you can hear anyone besides someone right next to you doing anything.
I dunno; I like having a good time at shows and seeing/hearing other people having a good time, so unless it's some horsefeathers heckling or trying to get attention or whatever, who cares.
Plus you overhear some really good dumb and funny horsefeathers at shows. It's all part of the entertainment for me.

The last show I was at was probably Bob Mould. He’s loud and fun. No way you can hear other people.

I wear these at every concert I attend, allows me to hear the music and they basically drown out the crowd chatter. Lotsa chompers at jam shows I like to attend.

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
Yeah, that's a good point; when I've got earplugs in, it's near impossible to hear anyone talking outside of my immediate vicinity. It would have to be someone REALLY making a scene to hear them over the music and through the plugs.

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
probably the saddest thing a person can do alone is going to Vegas
years ago we had money left in the dept budget toward the end of the fiscal year so my boss sent me to a software conference out there, and as a married guy who doesn't gamble or care about ventriloquist comedians i was left just wandering the strip at night awkwardly turning down cocaine dealers and prostitutes, like "oh no thanks maybe next time"

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
I just can't bring myself to wear ear plugs to a concert. I know it's dumb but growing up listening to rock music at loud volumes it seems counterintuitive to listen at a lower volume. Almost sacrilegious.

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
Seeing as the trade off is not having worse hearing loss/tinnitus AND you can't hear people talking around you, it might be worth embracing.
And I say that as an idiot who did not start using earplugs at concerts until just a few years ago. I really have to try hard to not think about the damage I've done when I have to fall asleep with something on/playing so that the incessant ringing/buzzing doesn't drive me insane. Like, it really doesn't make the music sound worse at all (hell, with venues with horribly mixed or maxed out sound systems, they actually help).

The new style plugs these days only block out the harmful frequencies, it's pretty great. Still get pretty clear sound, but your ears don't ring post-show, and you won't have long term hearing loss. Though I've done most of the damage to my ears listening in the car, haha.

I'm almost 50. The damage is done at this point. I don't even go to many shows any more. I used to go to a ton but with how expensive tickets have become and not wanting to deal the overwhelming amount off morons in society these days I stopped going to most concerts.

Re: Movie Thread 2: The Sequel
A friend of mine bought Puscifer tickets earlier this year and gave me one. the seats were split, he was with his wife and i was with his brother in law in another section, His BIL was really high and got stressed out during the opening band (who was terrrrrrrrrible) and bailed, so i just chilled and watched the whole show by myself. it was fun.
