Definitely doesn't surprise me if this is true.

Of course the US did this exact same thing back in 1988 to an Iranian airliner.

I dont know about you guys but accidentally shooting down a passenger airplane is something that should happen 0 times

I saw some photos of the wreckage that appeared to have a ton of bullet holes, but I attributed the post to tinfoil hat conspiracy nutsos.

especially 10 miles from the end of a major runway . . . how did that even happen? I would guess commercial jets fly that path all the time.

Mistakes happen when people start bombing each other. If only there was a lesson to take from this.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/29/entertai ... index.html

The actor and longtime aviation enthusiast was piloting a plane at the Hawthorne Airport in Los Angeles on April 24, when he crossed a runway where another aircraft was landing.
"Mr. Ford crossed the airport's only runway in his aircraft after he misheard a radio instruction from ATC. He immediately acknowledged the mistake and apologized to ATC for the error," a representative for the actor told CNN in a statement on Wednesday

Harrison Ford has to be the worst pilot ever right?

-Crash landing in 2017 after reporting engine failure - we can excuse that
-Crashed helicopter during a training flight in 1999
-Emergency landing in 2000
-Landed on the wrong runway in 2017 and almost crashed into an American Airlines plane that was taxiing
-This incident a few days ago

Maybe I'm wrong and these were all unavoidable errors, but the dude has to feel lucky to be alive.

He wasn't the pilot, but he was pretty famously an evacuated passenger on a plane that crashed in '97.

And how many times did he crash the Millennium Falcon? How this man continues to be allowed into the cockpit is beyond me

Only once that I can think of, and that was intentional to stay below the radar or something.

i think you could reasonably claim that commercial aviation was in a protracted beta testing phase until the implementation of redundant control systems, but since then these planes' ability to avoid falling out of the sky is truly remarkable. that engine is the size of a minivan and suffered an uncontained failure, its front cowling coming off in basically a single piece, yet the fully fueled and near-fully loaded wide-body made it back to the airport just fine on one engine

i miss flying, can't wait to get back at it

Boeing wrote:While the NTSB investigation is ongoing, we recommended suspending operations of the 69 in-service and 59 in-storage 777s powered by Pratt & Whitney 4000-112 engines until the FAA identifies the appropriate inspection protocol.

so this is like the third or fourth "uncontained failure" by these engines in recent years. i think past incidents have occurred over the ocean, soiling many undergarments and making much of the debris unrecoverable. so some Good News there! littering its shrapnel all over suburban colorado means investigators can get a more complete picture of what went wrong with the engine. i'm neither an engineer nor an aviation safety expert (clearly lol), but it seems like the consensus is focused on the fan blades. fan blade fatigue is already part of the inspections these things go through, so one can only assume at this point that unless a new inspection technique is being brought to bear, the frequency of the inspections is going to increase at the very least

what i'm curious about is whether the GE variant of the 777 powerplant can be reasonably retrofitted to the P&W-equipped models? or maybe there's an overhaul to the turbofan that P&W can do to keep these planes more or less in their existing configuration? seems like this fan blade thing is likely to be a persistent issue with these engines as they get up there in the years

so the answer to the first question is a resounding "no". it's not that it can't be done, but the economics of it might be dubious. the potential down time and cost, along with the already-incurred hours on the airframe would probably lead most to scrap the old one and purchase a new one with no hours on the airframe and newer, more fuel-efficient (and less explode-y) engines

and the answer to the second question is that they perform any necessary airframe repairs, slap on a new engine and get 'er back in the game. i haven't seen anything that says definitively whether or not the engine that shredded is original to the airframe, but we'll know once the ntsb releases its investigation report. ideally it was, and these fan blade fractures are a result of 30 years of near-constant use and not some persistent manufacturing defect

more troubling than the rapid unplanned disassembly is the fire. when i saw the engine burning in the video, my first thought that it was maybe normal and just burning off residual fuel or oil or something, but the persistence seems so imply that the fuel shut off failed and was still delivering. could be a while before they get this sorted out and allow these planes back in the air

The plane isn’t the only thing going up on this flight.

Tim went on one mid-flight wine bender too many:

But now, airlines appear to be experiencing a bit of boozy turbulence, leading some major carriers to discontinue alcohol service until further notice. Food & Wine reports that, as a result of “passengers behaving badly,” both American Airlines and Southwest Airlines have decided not to resume alcoholic beverage service during flights.

Can't blame me for this one. When I fly these days I just bury my head in a book and try to get it over with as quickly as possible.
