On Nov. 24, the morning after Thanksgiving, Austin Lee Edwards, a now-deceased 28-year-old former Virginia state trooper, drove 2,500 miles to “meet” a 15-year-old girl he’d been talking to online, posing as a teenager himself. When he arrived in her hometown of Riverside, California, Edwards killed her mother and grandparents before setting her house ablaze and kidnapping the girl.

This week, the Los Angeles Times reported that Edwards had mental health issues and had previously groomed other girls, yet was still hired by both the Virginia State Police and later, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, where he was employed at the time of the triple homicide. Though authorities initially announced that he was killed in a police shootout that same day, weeks later, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said that Edwards’ cause of death was, in fact, a self-inflicted gunshot wound with a service gun.

Officers need huge budgets to keep themselves safe as they perform their duty, so they aren't in fear for their lives!

No not like that!

I remember this story making the rounds a couple months ago, and then no kind of follow up. Really just sounds like intimidation and more bull horsefeathers asset seizure:

https://gizmodo.com/ufo-fbi-area-51-rai ... 1849887879

When federal agents kicked in his door one icy morning last November, Joerg Arnu was still asleep. Roused by deafening bangs and shouts, the 60-year-old retired software developer stumbled out of bed to find a crowd of unfamiliar men in military gear standing in his foyer.

One of the half dozen men, he remembers, was visibly armed and pointing a gun in his direction. Another was holding a riot shield. “This is the FBI,” one yelled. “Put your hands against the wall!” Less than a minute later, Arnu was being handcuffed and led forcefully outside, dressed only in sweatpants and a T-shirt. His house, located in the remote town of Rachel, Nevada, had been swarmed by police vans. Shivering from a lightly falling snow, he was placed in the back of one of the vehicles, while over a dozen agents from the FBI and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations—the Air Force’s secretive counterintelligence wing—poured into his home. Not long afterwards, agents started asking him questions. One of the first things they wanted to know was: “Are there any booby traps on the property?” To Arnu, it seemed like a pretty weird thing to ask. A retired software developer and self-admitted senior citizen? Did that really sound like somebody who would boobytrap his own house?

Of course, Arnu had one particular hobby that he felt might be of interest to federal investigators: he had spent the last two decades tending to a popular blog about “Area 51,” the remote military base near Rachel that was known for its shroud of mystery and UFO lore. Arnu’s site, Dreamland Resort, regularly posted news about the base—including articles about its alleged connection to “black projects” and other clandestine government operations. When police crashed into his life that wintry day, he suspected it had something to do with this. Still, running a blog wasn’t illegal, and the force with which the government had come down on him seemed unbelievable. Just what exactly were agents looking for what? And what did they think he’d done?

Arnu shared pictures with Gizmodo of the damage caused by the feds as they stormed both residences. They clearly showed door frames that have been violently impacted. Arnu says that agents also tracked mud all over his carpeting, broke a desk and a lamp, and left his homes in a state of disarray. The damages from the raids total approximately $5,000, he said.

The biggest loss that the blogger suffered, however, was the assets that police seized during the raids: approximately $20,000 worth of electronics, according to him. This included five computers, multiple phones, external hard drives, digital cameras, and an expensive drone, among other items.

“I’d really like to have my stuff back,” Arnu said in an interview. “I lost all of the backups. I lost literally all of the information that I had saved on my computers, including tax information, financial information, medical records—all of that is gone and is basically being held hostage by the FBI right now.”

As of this week, it’s been more than two months since the government raided both of Arnu’s properties, but he still hasn’t been charged with a crime. He was served with a search warrant that was missing dozens of pages and gave no reason for the raid; the case records related to the warrant have been sealed, so there’s no way of telling what the point of the search was. He also hasn’t been able to get in touch with the FBI, aside from a letter from the agency’s legal department denying reimbursement for the damage caused during the raids, he said. And, it goes without saying, he never got his stuff back.

With the release of the body cam of the murder of Tyre Nichols, it'll be another reminder of how terrible our country truly is.

The audio of it was sickening.

It sure seems foreseeable that this Scorpion unit would end up turning the way it did. I’d like to know if any kind of oversight was put on a unit formed specifically to crack down on targeted neighborhoods. Feels like anything of that nature is bound to devolve into little more than a beat down squad.

Although it was completely expected, it's still sickening to hear many justifying Tyre getting beat to death. It's the usual gestapo crap such as "he shouldn't have resisted" and "why was he running if he didn't do anything wrong" as well as going all the way to call for harm/imprisonment for the Memphis police chief who they accused of throwing the police under the bus for doing their job.

It's not ironic that you can have the same skin color and still be racist.

Police culture/ is rotted to the core. They take an oath to protect and serve, which only extends to fellow police officers. They're completely ignorant of the constitution and the few that know it, try to manipulate it to best serve them.

Like Floyd or Rodney King or any mass shooting, we'll never see change.

Have more training than a hair stylist, end qualified immunity, create a national baseline for police regulations (not based on municipality, county, or state), have social workers address mental health crisis.

There should be no way in hell those police bystanders who didn't intervene should not be convicted of murder.

Whether the cops are white, black, latino, etc doesn't really matter when they're trained to identify a certain type of person as a threat.

Those same people REALLY hate it when a cop gets killed on duty and I say they should have complied. Somehow it's different then.

Meanwhile, Gov. Hochul, is talking-up devoting even more resources to New York police goon squads, after muscling-up to get her conservative judge pick named to the state's highest court. Gotta love "moderate democrats."

A southern California police department is facing national backlash after footage revealed that officers fatally shot a double amputee and wheelchair user who appeared to be hobbling away on the ground before he was killed.

Anthony Lowe, 36, was killed by officers in Huntington Park, a city in southern Los Angeles county, last Thursday. Cellphone footage captured part of the incident, showing Lowe on a sidewalk next to his wheelchair appearing to try to flee as two officers approach him with weapons drawn. More police cars arrived as the officers followed Lowe, who seemed to be limping away, but the video did not capture the shooting.

Now, Lowe’s family is calling for officers to be terminated and face murder charges.

“I’m heartbroken, and filled with anger and rage,” Tatiana Jackson, his younger sister, told the Guardian on Tuesday. “I just can’t understand why they would do that to someone in a wheelchair. I want somebody to explain to me what was the reason that you had to gun down a guy who has no legs.”

It struck me the other day how absurd the concept of a police union is.

Like, a union is supposed to be something to help workers fight back and resist labor oppression from or supported by the state.

Meanwhile a police union is a [expletive] union for the oppression tool of the state, and it's like the only type of union conservatives support.

Shot while cleaning out his deceased grandmother's apartment, because someone called the cops thinking he was burglarizing it.

I'll reserve judgement until the bodycam. If he indeed tried to use the vehicle as a weapon that changes things, but it seems like whenever this is in police reports it never actually happened that way.
