great essay about conscious hip-hop and the artists that make/made it.

That's a really good read, and I've seen thoughts along those lines pop up in similar pieces over the years.

It really is true that conscious or backpack rap was and is basically a dead end creatively. So much of it still sounds great, but almost all of those dudes (and yes, as the article points out, they were almost all dudes) ended up so far up their own asses that there's really no difference between Mos Def basically going away and Talib Kweli just putting out variations of the same horsefeathers over and over and over and over and over again; both say nothing, reveal nothing (either content-wise or emotionally or introducing new talent), and are almost always looking backwards, the latter maybe being the thing that doomed it all to begin with.

Seriously, how many of those guys do you still see popping up regularly on anyone's tracks outside of the old conscious circle, with everyone just happily sniffing each other's farts and griping about how nothing is like it used to be? Almost none of them. It was this totally insular, closed off, weirdly elitist mindset that burned out hard.

horsefeathers, I swear, El-P and the Roots are MAYBE the only figures from that world that is still out there doing anything of real note.

That's pretty good. I figured he would be within a year or 2 of my age, but turns out he's 10 years younger. I think it kind of generally speaks to the natural arc of a young black man's personal consciousness. My timeline is very similar to his, even though we have the age difference. I think as a young black kid, as you start to form your music tastes, the music kind of dictates your direction in life.

In general, it speaks a lot to the mentality that plagues black people in general. Success is measured in certain ways (getting out the hood). But that success is null and void if you are perceived to turn your back on your blackness. So conscious music was essentially a way blacks used to divide themselves from others, while still maintaining your blackness. But people are more complex than being put in a singular box.

I can definitely write an essay on that essay, is what I'm saying. LOL

I was at the oldest and whitest attended live music show ever last night. Any guesses?

I'm going to random guess, The Black Crowes, without googling the name of the venue and June 30th schedule.

Shockingly, to me, the Black Crowes. The oldest and whitest kids you know were at the Stone Pony last night. I was a relative young punk in that crowd.

Rage was badass. Set was kinda short and the sound wasn’t the greatest but still an amazing show. Zack hurt his leg about 4-5 songs in and did the rest of the show sitting down near the back corner of the stage. I hope it’s nothing serious but they did carry him off the stage at the end of the show.

I had absolutely no idea that they hadn't done a show since the one I saw them at, at the Coliseum.

As far as the injury goes, like, damn dude you could have at least stayed at the front of the stage. Wtf at sitting in the back corner.

It happened in the middle of the show. Not sure how he handled it last night but they didn’t have a lot of time to figure out what to do. There was a place to sit and he took it. Quite frankly it didn’t affect the performance at all for me.
