It’s hair metal. There is no such animal as glam metal or whatever. They were know at the time as hair metal bands to distinguish them from Ozzie, Judas Priest, Metallica, etc. and it was kind of a derogatory thing.
I never much got into the genre, but I liked some of the songs. I was a punk/new wave type. Punk was not nearly as popular with my age group at the time.

While we're on the subject of hair metal / glam rock / 80's rock, etc, here are a couple newish bands that fans of those genres may appreciate.
Nestor -
The L.A. Maybe -
Both of their debut albums are very well done, and two of my favorites from the last couple years.

Opposite for me. I loved the Skid Row debut album more than Slave, but Slave was good. Interestingly enough, I'm currently reading "Nothin' But A Good Time" which is the uncensored history of glam rock/hair metal from the '80's. I was a fan of many of those bands, but I'm in that age group that fit perfectly. I'm the same age as most of those bands from that era...Motley, Ratt, Cinderella, LA Guns, etc...and I had a secret obsession with wanting to be on stage doing what they were doing. Problem was I never learned an instrument and I lived in the middle of nowhere, IL.
Just bought my first electric guitar and getting ready to do online lessons. Meanwhile, while reading this book, my headphones are playing all of the debut albums of all of those hair metal bands. Probably a bit too late to live my dream, but I'm cooped up in the house with nothing better to do. LOL. I don't typically even listen to that era of music these days, preferring more of a blues/blues rock sound these days, but it's fun to go back and reminisce.
what kind of guitar did you get? i just got my first strat (never been a fender guy). it's just a 1998 MIM, but it plays really nicely► Show Spoiler
I got an Epiphone Les Paul.
i love les pauls. i used to have a gibson, but I still own an epiphone.

No, that’s not correct. It’s just not. It might be called that now but it wasn’t at the time. As others have pointed out glam rock was a different genre and a different time period and bears no roots or influences of hair metal bands.
Metal (US and British)
Speed metal (mostly European bands)
Hair metal (US, mostly West Coast)
The genre is the type of music, not how they look. They are children of Led Zeppelin, KISS, and Van Halen. Not Bowie, Gary Glitter, T. Rex, and Queen.

Just listened to Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime, for the first time. Hell of an album. They absolutely nailed the concept. Told an extremely dark story and the instrumentation and the arrangements were superb. By reading the comments on YT I sort of expected to be let down because it's such high praise, but it's 30+ years old. But horsefeathers, it lived up to the hype.

eh,the term "glam metal" is new and to some of us old dudes, its a kinda made up and recent descriptor. To some, and I mean only the truest of the true to the genre, its a rip off to re-term it. it was hair metal, straight up. nobody called it glam metal in the 80's

Did they actually call it "hair metal" in the 80's, or did that term come later?

I feel like it was used as a derogatory term, but now those bands embrace it. The Sirius XM channel for the genre is called "Hair Nation"

I played it during that time in CA. Honestly don’t remember being too concerned about exact terminology. Mostly we all referred to ourselves as metal even though what I was playing by today’s standards wasn’t even close.
Got to remember back in those days you’d see Slayer and Poison on the shelves right next each other in the metal section.
I just don’t remember the hyper sub-genre classification system like there is today.

Yes, the classifications with in classifications, and sometimes multiple names for one sub-sub genre
But technically, the worst ones were also called hair bands as I recall. And worse yet, they still have fans

They called it Hair Metal in the 80s. It was often, but not always derogatory. It was used by my friends o distinguish "good" hard rock from "pop" hard rock. I remember Kurt Loder calling the music hair metal on MTV. He would say stuff like,.. "the lead singer of the hair metal band Poison.." One thing it was never called was glam metal.

It's really not hard to find tons of uses of "glam metal" back in the 80's; "hair metal" definitely took over as the more common term, especially once there was more of a backlash against the stuff, but there's really no point to acting like the term was ever used.
There's really no point to any of this.

THE POINT, dear friend, is in the hairspray, silk bandanas and spandex:

If only there was a magical tool out there where one could very quickly and easily search and see if a phrase was used back in the day.

I have a love - hate thing with RATT. Hated their music, however:
In the late 99's I drove a delivery van all over minnesota while I was in undergrad. Once, while out in the boonies near Aberdeen South Dakota I was listening to an NPR station that played music, might have been a U of MN Morris or SDSU station. They were interviewing some dude who was in town for their concert, but he was talking about the Somalian crisis. Very informed, intelligent, humane conversation. Finally the DJ says, "....and we'll be right back after this news break with Stephen Pearcy, lead singer for RATT"
I nearly ran the van off the road...I was stunned. RATT: somehow decent human beings

FWIW, I always associated Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue as “hair metal” bands. Never heard the term “glam metal” until someone mentioned it here. When I think of “glam rock,” T. Rex, The New York Dolls and Iggy Pop (among others) come to mind.

This whole discussion is amusing to me. Who horsefeathering cares what it's called? Just enjoy the music. As someone born in 1973 this era was right in my wheelhouse. Sure the visuals are cringey but there is a lot of great guitar heavy rock & roll in there.

Total ironic aside, but it's weird to call someone the most pedantic person, when pedantic is a word used to describe something a pedant does. Much more precise to all him the biggest pedant.
